"But, after spending four months with them, it's my opinion that they're worth listening to." By. JACK AVER NEW YORK (UPI) The Columbia Broadcasting System has a one-hour special coming up on next Monday at 10 p.m. that, it hopes, will explain the somewhat pixilated conduct of some students on the Berkeley campus of the University of California in recent months. "Those kids at Cal are clamoring for the ear of the American public, loud enough to be heard, but perhaps too noisy to be understood clearly," said produceriArthur- "We hope that the broadcast will dispel much of the misinformation about this new, and very different, generation of students by clarifying who they are and what they want." "The Berkeley Rebels" was filmed on location on the campus. A NEW BREED "It's really a brand-new type of college kid we're dealing with," Barron continued.

"They go far beyond the age-old rebellion of the young against their elders and against authority. They're restless, they're outspoken, they're militant. "They flatly reject the politics and morality of present-day American society as they see them. And we tell the story through their eyes and by exploring their world." "They're not at the bottom of their class academically," Barron continued. "Rather, they're closer to the top. And, above all, they're by no means all left wing, although their term for themselves is 'the new STUDY CITED Barron said that a study made by the political science department of the university showed that 47 per cent of the students who participated in the demonstrations have no political af-fiations of any sort: that only DU BROW National League pennant on the same day was perhaps more wracking. As for he Schirra flight, for the first time the Telstar satellite beamed the launching to Europe.

May 15, 1963 After a day's delay because of radar trouble in Bermuda, laconic Gordon Cooper, the quiet man, set out on his 34 hour 20 minute flight. He took along a tiny television camera to send back the first "live" U. S. pictures from space of himself and the Florida coast. The pictures were hardly discernible to viewers, but they were certainly precedent setting.

At the flight's finish, Cooper suddenly had trouble with his automatic control system and it became clear he would guide his craft down from orbit by hand. The tension finally was broken for viewers when a pool reporter on the recovery ship announced jubilantly that Cooper's capsule all at once was in view to the naked eye as it descended from the sky, swinging underneath its parachute. March 23, 1965 Gus Gris-som and John Young were fired into space for 4 hours 54 minutes in the nation's first two-man orbital journey. And televiewers sat in later when President Johnson got on the phone on their return, called Grissom and said: "Gus, this is Lyndon Johnson How are you?" By RICK HOLLYWOOD (UPI) The triumphant conclusion yesterday of the four day space flight of Edward White and James Mc- Divitt may have seemed to some televiewers almost an expected, matter-of-course proce dure because of past suc cesses, But do you remember the television expenences of those past successes? In 1961, astronauts Alan Shep- ard and Gus Gnssom had achieved separate sub orbital flights, brief ones 15 and 16 minutes each.

Then: Feb. 20, 1962 John Glenn, a steel' nerved 40-year-old father, embarked on a 4-hour 56-minute mission in a Mercury capsule. As he was fired into space, a CBS reporter, unable to contain his feelings any longer, expressed the thoughts of millions of; televiewers who joined in the nefvous and emotional experience of the blastoff: "Aw, go, baby." It was a memorable blending of reporter audience reaction. May 24, 1962 Scott Carpenter's mission, also 4 hours 56 minutes, provided one of the most terrifying televiewing experiences video has ever known because of what was described at the time as a 40-min-ute loss of radio contact upon re-entry. Later on, it turned out that officials had overdrama-tized the alleged crisis.

But at the time there was a nightmarish dread. At New York's Grand Central Station, where a crowd watched the flight on a large CBS TV screen, there was suddenly silence and grim-ness. Finally it was reported that a search plane had picked Carpenter's high frequency radio beacon out of the Atlantic Ocean and that he was in a life raft. Oct 3, 1962 Wally Schirra went aloft for 9 hours 13 minutes, and it was a breeze. To baseball fans, the nationally-televised playoff game in which the.

In the numbers game, CBS rolled up a 16.2, with NBC achieving 15.9 and ABC, 15.4.
