OKAYAMA, Japan (AP) A powerful American swimming team again proved its supremacy in swimming tonight. The U.S. 17-man team won six out of eight swimming events at the final international meet in the Okayama City 50-meter pool. No world record was threatened but one American mark was shattered in the 800-meter freestyle by Don Schollander, California's Santa Clara High School swimmer. He was clocked in 9:94.0, bettering Roy Saari's listed mark of 9:09.8 by 5.8 seconds.

The Americans swept the free style events. The U.S. swimmers took the top three places in the 100 meter freestyle and placed 1-2 in the 800-meter freestyle race. Steve Clark, American record holder for the sprint race, won the 100-meter in 54.6. He was trailed by Gary Ilman in 55.0.

In third place was Edward Townsend in 56.1. Last year the average mutuel play hit $560,145, an all-time high for a fair meeting in the North ern half of the state. However, with the fair circuit showing its greatest upswing in history, the San Mateo County Fair, earlier this month at Bay Meadows jumped into the top position by eclipsing all records. The handle reached a daily average of $585,299, knocking over the State Fair's mark. In addition, a new single day bet ting mark of $938,796 was set at the San Mateo session. Every one of the fairs has been up considerably this yearf with the San Joaquin County Fair, which wound up last Sat urday; showing an amazing 20 per cent increase in the betting.

The wagering trend has fol lowed a better grade of horses now campaigning on the circuit They've been attracted by the constant boosting of purses, with a $2,000 minimum in force for the current meeting here. The increased interest in fair circuit racing should carry through here and produce new attendance and wagering marks. With more money to shoot at, the horsemen have swamped the entry windows and 13 of the 16 thoroughbred races carded here the first two dayr overfilled. Many of the trainers will find it difficult jto get their horses to the post more than once dur ing the 10-day session, with as many as SO runners being entered in a single race. Even the feature tomorrow, a six furlong event for three-year-olds and upward, overfilled with 11 entries.

Only ten horses can start over this track. Named to the race are Nova Scotia, Motor City, Boss I Go, Pilaf, Single Jay, Wiscoline, Honest Dollar, Yata Inca, My Paper, New Admiral and Aces Gold. Under the allowance condi tions of the race, Motor City, New Admiral and Aces Gold each will pack 121 pounds. Motor City, a five-year-old son of Tom Fool, has won two of his four starts this summer. He never raced previously.

Nova Scotia is the most im proved three-year-old on the cir cuit and, although going up against older horses, could prove the one to beat.
