STATE San Francisco State College's radio-TV-film department holds its 196 "Film Finals" at 7:30 p.m: today in the school's Main Theater. The program features motion pictures prepared by students, who script, produce and edit the films. COLISEUM DRIVE-IN OPENS HERE TONIGHT -v. 'Cj Cliff Robertson portraying Mr.

Next week, the Coliseum will move into first-run status as it joins seven other Eastbay theaters in presenting "A Distant with Mr. and Mrs. Troy Donahue. A -77 7 i By BOB MacKENZIE "12 ANGRY PEOPLE," adaptation of "12 Angry Men," by the Playmakers of Pleasant Hill.

Friday and Saturday nights, Pleasant Hill Recreation Center. Even i when flawlessly executed, "12 Angry Men" is not a good stage play. Originally a television drama and subsequently a movie, it was written for the camera. Filmed, it is a tight and gripping piece of work. But it is static on a stage, for several reasons.

First, the three acts unroll in a single, uninteresting set a jury room, where 12 jurors must decide the fate of a boy accused of murdering his father. There is no genuine action; the story 1 in words only. Three acts of endless wrangling over points of evidence by characters who scarcely move from- their chairs has an eventually soporific, not to say claustrophobic, effect. A movie camera can cut from one face to another, catching a flicker of emotion here, a nervous gesture there. It can stand away from the players or zoom in for a probing inspection.

It can move around the cramped room, varying the viewpoint But the stage audience has no West Coast Satire NEW YORK (AV-A West Coast specimen of brash topical satire is being brought to Broadway next autumn by producer Arthur Cantor. He participated in the arrival here several seasons back of the youthful Second City group of who pioneered the improvisational lampoon fad. The show is put. on by The Committee, a group of. six performers and a musician.

The Coliseum, off the Nimltz Freeway at High Street, features the usual outdoor movie refreshment fringe benefits plus "hi-fidelity sound." The opening bill is "PT-109," story of the late President Kennedy's wartime heroism with such happy mobility.

It is frozen in one spot, watching actors equally transfixed, and unless the players are explosive and magnetic, they soon become just a bunch of people sitting around talking. False action such as walking to the water cooler or opening the window is not sufficient to relieve the stuffy quality of the play. The play must have seemed ideal to the Playmakers, because of their intimate, sparsely equipped theater. No elaborate Nancy King of El Cerrito and Carl Reggiardo of Richmond play Sophie and Tom, the lead roles in Contra Costa College's production of "Tom Jones," an original musical comedy. The college production has a freely adapted script from the novel and original music, including 11 songs.

Performances will be seen at the San Pablo campus today and tomorrow. But the advantages to an actor of having an audience within touching distance are dubious; every blink and swallow are subject to close scrutiny. That kind of microscopic- playing requires more training and experience than most amateur actors can muster. Some of the actors manage the natural, realistic approach required. Other cast members are far too busy making meaningful faces and visibly reacting to every line of dialogue. One undisciplined-actress flails her lines with such histrionic bombast that she gets laughs where the author didn't foresee them.

Motionless at best, the play is not at its best here, but let's register due" acknowledgement that it is a lot tougher than it looks. S.F.
