THE WEST SCHUYLKILL PRESS and PINE GROVE HERALD VOLUME 85 NUMBER 6 TREMONT, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 1962 ESTABLISHED 1877 Every Contestant To Get Free Movie Ticket In Name Theatre Competition Interest is running high in the "Name the Theatre" contest nounced in the PRESS-HERALD last week for Colonial Hawthorn Company, which is seeking a name for the next modern month movie in Pine theatre Grove. that will open other advertisement on the contest appears on page two of today's newspaper. Because the opening of the theatre is being delayed until all improvements are completed, the contest deadline has been extended from September 22 to October Additional prizes are also being offered. Letters accompanying the suggested theatre names being sent the are, in most instances, interesting that the theatre owners want every contestant to have an award. So each person who sends in an entry will be given a complimentary ticket for one show.

Another extra prize will be a complimentary ticket good for one month to each contestant whose letter on "Why Pine Grove Needs A Movie Theatre" is selected for publication in the PRESS-HERALD at the conclusion of the contest. The grand prize, a $50.00 U. S. Savings Bond and a full year's free pass to the theatre, will go to the person who submits the winning name for the theatre and the best letters on "Why This Name Should Be Selected" and "Why Pine Grove Needs A Movie Theatre." Beautiful Theatre Movie-goers will be enchanted with Pine Grove's beautiful new theatre when it is completed. Rich Philippine mahogany walls will be enhanced with costly damask draperies in the auditorium, which will have the very latest type acoustical and fireguard ceiling.

The ceiling itself is pierced with thousands of. perforations and it i is through these perforations that the theatre is air-conditioned, cooled in the summer and heated in the winter. The cool or warm air is blown from the weather machine into the space above the ceiling and from there it filters through the perforations to keep the auditorium comfortably cool or warm as required. Entering the French glass doors, under the new marquee, takes you into the outer lobby which has a stark white ceiling and indirect fluorescent lighting. Here, indoors, is the ticket box so the patrons will not have to buy tickets outdoors.

Double doors lead to the inner lobby where there will be a concession stand for popcorn, candy and ice cream novelties. The balcony that was in the old Hippodrome Theatre has been removed and the orchestra has also been taken out, SO that main pit, floor has a seating capacity of 400. The damask hangings, costing over $4,000.00, will provide for perfect stereophonic sound. A new wide screen has been installed so that the newest cinemascope and panavision films will be shown.

The screen is 32 feet wide and 16 feet high. The remodeled stage will have a handsome new electric curtain. Luxurious carpeting is being placed in the auditorium aisles and in both the inner and outer lobbies. Modern rest rooms, public telephones, and ladies' and men's lounges, located in the basement, will be reached by steps leading from the lobby. Later, the Colonial Hawthorn Company is planning a rathskeller for another section of the basement.

Nurse Receives $100 Cash Award At Graduation ELEANOR J. MOCK Eleanor J. Mock, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dean R.

Mock, 70 East Pottsville Street, Pine Grove, was graduated September 6 from Harrisburg Polyclinic Hospital School of Nursing. Exercises were held in the auditorium of the Scottish Rite Cathedral. Graduation class consisted of 83 members. Miss Mock was presented the "Walter Mann Mumma Award" of $100.00 for excellence in Medical Nursing. She was also the recipient of a citation for perfect attendance during the three-year health, training period.

She is a 1959 Pine Grove High School graduate and has accepted a position in the Medical-Surgical Department in the Harrisburg Polyclinic Hospital. Attending the graduation exercises from Pine Grove were Eleanor's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Mock, her grandmother, Mrs. Edna Mock, and Robert Deichert.

Community Council Outlines Work At Swimming Pool At the Pine Grove Community Council meeting Tuesday evening financial reports were presented, and it was reported that the partition walls in the bath house have been completed. The swimming pool has been drained, now the accumulated mud must be removed from the bottom of the pool. A work crew is needed for this job. Gus Mendell is to install lights in the bath house and Vince Miller is to break the cement at a pipe where a leak has been discovered so the leak may be repaired. November 9 has been confirmed as the night for the Community Council public card party.

Jim Endres suggested that each member bring at least one other person with him to the next meeting which will probably be held at the Borough Hall, the first Tuesday of October. Attending the meeting were: Jim Endres, Harry Gensemer Horace Hess, Mr. and Mrs. Willard Daubert, Eston Witmer, Louise Witmer, Frank Winsheimer and Dr. George Wynn.

Student To Tell Woman's Club Of Life In Austria Miss Mary Jo Purcell, the 1961-62 American Field Service exchange student from Pottsville School District, will be the guest speaker at the meeting of the Tremont Woman's Club to be held in the social room of the Methodist Church on Friday evening at 8:00 o'clock. Miss Purcell will tell of her experiences as an exchange student to Austria where she lived with two Austrian families. This month she will enroll at Goucher College in Towson, outside of Baltimore, on a full scholarship. Mrs. William Jones is chairman of the American Home Life Committee of the club in charge of the meeting.

(Photo by David Ziegler) Install Officers At Monday Meet Of Tremont Post Installation of officers for the coming year highlighted the meeting of the Tremont American Legion, Brennan-Keip Post No. 384, held at the post home on Monday evening. Robert Ertwine of Ringtown, 13th District Commander, was the installing officer and was assisted by Charles Marquardt, Deputy District Commander. In his remarks Ertwine stated that 15 per cent of the membership should be paid by October 8 and also explained the Christmas card program.

He said all members should buy the cards received or return them to the department. Ralph M. Bashore, Commander of the Tremont post, gave brief remarks on the membership and the activities of the post planned for the coming year. Installed were: Commander, Ralph M. Install Officers At Tremont Legion Auxiliary Banquet The annual banquet and installation of officers of the Tremont American Legion Ladies Auxiliary was held at the post home last. evening. Mrs. Arthur Lewis of Tamaqua, Director of Schuylkill County Council of American Legion Auxiliaries, was the installing officer. Installed were: Mrs.

The meeting has been changed from Thursday due to the fact that some members of the club will be going Harrisburg to hear President Kennedy speak at a fundraising dinner. School Board Makes Changes In Personnel Pine Grove Area Joint School Board effected several personnel changes at the board's monthly meeting on Thursday. Henry Krammes, a janitor at the Pine Grove Area High School, was transferred to the elementary building. Claude Mease of Pine Grove Township was elected to fill the vacancy at the high school building. Charles Kemmerling of Washington Township was re-elected school attendance officer.

Irma Richter, Home Economics instructor, was authorized to hold adult evening sewing classes. After discussion on the possibility of having the Annual Career Conference in the evening, it was decided that the conference will be held during school hours as in previous years. The board adopted a policy that only one English or literature course may be carried by a high school student during any one semester of the school term. The maintenance committee reported that the repair parts for the heating boilers in the high school have arrived and will be installed as soon as possible.

Bills amounting to $4,594.34 were approved for payment. following persons were approved as substitute teachers for the 1962-63 school term: Mary Schwalm, Irene Thomas, Rev. John Youse, Margaret Berger and Joanne Buecker, Fall Of Coal Is Fatal To Miner John Rock, 30, of Locust Dale, was killed instantly in a fall of coal around 10:50 a. m. Monday while at work at an independent mine at Keffers operated by the Tesco Coal Company on the road leading to the former Joliett Coal Company. Deputy Coroner Richard Minnig of Tremont pronounced him dead when he was brought to the surface at 11:45 a. m.

and released the body to the John Cooke Funeral Home in Girardville. Cause of death was attributed to pulmonary hemorrhages. victim had sustained two skull fractures, severe compound rib fractures, crushing injuries of the chest and facial injuries. It was reported that a brother-inlaw of Mr. Rock, Walter Buehl of Ashland, had been working with him and had just gone to the surface when the accident occurred.

According to the coroner, a rush of coal from the breast knocked out the magazine and covered the victim on the loading platform below. Mr. Rock was born and reared in Locust Dale, a son of Thomas and Barbara Rissinger Rock. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church at Locust Dale.

Surviving are his parents, his wife, the former Mary Minnich, three children, all at home; three brothers, two sisters and several nieces and nephews. His funeral will be held on Friday morning from his late residence with Mass in St. Joseph's Church at Locust Dale. Interment will be made in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Fountain Springs.

BROWNIES TO HAVE GET ACQUAINTED DAY ON OCTOBER 2 "Get Acquainted Day" for all the Brownies who registered on Monday, September 10, at the PRESSHERALD office, Pine Grove, will be on Tuesday, October 2, from 3:15 to 4:30 p. m. in the basement of the Hose, Hook and Ladder Co. No. 1 fire house on Mifflin Street.

Also the girls who were formerly with Mrs. Betty Hikes in Troop 60 shall report at the same place and same time. The leader of the new Brownie troop is Mrs. Harold Felty. Her assistants are Mrs.

William Burke Mrs. Richard Adams, Mrs. Dion Boyer and Mrs. George Keesey. Parents are to send a permission slip with their daughters to give to Miss Ruch so they may have permission to attend Brownie meeting every Tuesday immediately after school is dismissed.

This is one of the school laws and especially applies to the girls who use the bus to go to and from school. BAND PARENTS TO MEET SEPT. 25 Pine Grove Band Parents Association will begin their fall activities with a meeting Tuesday evening, September 25. A sub sale is planned for some time this month. All parents who have children in the band are urged to attend the meetings.

Meetings will be held the fourth Tuesday of each month. SEWING CLASSES Adult Sewing Classes will be held at the Pine Grove High School beginning Wednesday, September 26, Area, at 7:00 p. m. Begin Plans To Establish Blood Bank In Tremont Groundwork is being laid for the establishment of a Blood Bank program in Tremont. The initial step of the plan was taken this week when the ministers of Tremont churches agreed to have Ministerium serve as sponsor of the Blood Bank, working under the direction of the Southern Schuylkill Chapter of the American Red Cross.

A definite date for the acceptance of blood will be announced soon. In the meantime, representatives of the Red Cross will arrange a meeting with the ministers to outline the program in detail. Complete information of the project will be announced in future issues of the PRESS-HERALD. Obituaries CLYDE E. MINNIG Clyde E.

Minnig, 59, of 302 West Center Street, Donaldson, died Wednesday morning in Pottsville Hospital where he had been admitted on August 27. He had been in ill health for the past nine years and was hospitalized several times. Born in Tremont, he was a son of the late William and Sara Schaffer Minnig and was married to the former Grace Schlegel. He was last employed in 1953 as a laborer at the Westwood Washery of the Stevens Coal Company. A resident of Donaldson for the past 26 years, he was a member of the United Church of Christ, Don-aldson, and previously served as a member of the consistory of the church for many years.

Mr. Minnig was vice president of the U. M. W. of Donaldson Local, and a member of the Tremont Fire Company.

Surviving besides his wife are four sisters: Mrs. Monroe Hand, Tremont; Mrs. Florence Jennings, Maryland; Mrs. Ethel Imschweiler, Tremont; Miss Eva Minnig, Tremont; also several nieces and nephews. His funeral will be held from the Minnig Funeral Home on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock.

Rev. F. L. Hemmig, pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church, Tremont, will officiate at the services and interment will be made in the United.

Church of Christ Cemetery, Tremont. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home on Friday evening after seven o'clock. MRS. SOLON V. BARR Mrs.

Ora Kehler Barr of 311 South Market Street, Mount Joy, former resident of Tremont, died Saturday morning in a nursing home in Columbia where she was guest for several weeks after being hospitalized following a stroke. Her husband, Solon V. Barr, a brother of Dr. Guy L. Barr of Tremont, survives.

Mrs. Barr was born in the Mahantongo Valley, a daughter of the late C. Robert and Ida Kehler. She came to Tremont with her parents and brothers in 1906 when her father opened a meat business The last member of her family, she was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Frank, Clarence, and Earl Kehler, and one sister, Mrs. Minnie Karterman.

Mrs. Clarence S. Kehler of Tremont and Mrs. Ada Kehler of Coatesville are sisters-inlaw of Mrs. Barr.

Her only survivors are her husband, nieces and a nephew. Funeral services were held at the convenience of the family at the Nissley Funeral Home, Mount Joy, on Tuesday, the Rev. Richard A. Todd, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment was made in Mount Joy Cemetery.

Attending the services from Tremont were Dr. and Mrs. Guy L. Barr, Mrs. Clarence S.

Kehler, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph T. Foulds. MRS.

WILLIAM J. GINLEY Mrs. Rita M. Ginley, 46, the former Rita Fox, a native of Tremont, died Monday night at her home, 1238 Eckert Avenue, Reading, following an illness of two months. Mrs.

Ginley was a daughter of the late Andrew J. and Mary Cunniff Fox of Tremont. She had been employed by Pomeroy's Reading, for 14 years, and was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and the Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality in Reading. Surviving are her husband, William J.

Ginley of Girardville; three sisters, Anne wife of John J. Mullen, with whom she resided; Mary wife of Nicholas J. McGrath, Philadelphia; Margaret wife of Horace Zuppert, Cleveland, Ohio; one niece and two nephews. Her funeral will be held on Friday morning from the Feeney Funeral Home, Reading, with Mass in St. Peter's Church.

Interment will be made in Gethsemane Cemetery. MRS. CAROLINE UNGER Mrs. Caroline Unger, 75, of Pine Grove R. D.

1, died Saturday in Pottsville Hospital following an illness of two months. Born in Bethel Township, Lebanon County, Mrs. Unger was a daughter of the late William and Agnes Daubert Koons. Her husband, Herbert Unger, died December 27, 1958. Surviving are five sons, Charles of Lebanon, Solomon of Jonestown R.

Paul of Hazleton, Clayton of Pottstown, and Russell of Pine Grove R. D. six daughters, Irene, wife of Charles Strubhar, and Lizzie, wife of Charles Ditzler, both of Pine Grove R. D. Helen, wife of Edward Behney, Pine Grove R.

Past President Roy Schneck and Lion Ralph Long have been appointed as the committee for this project.

Members were advised that October is membership month and prospective members should be contacted. Kenneth Snyder was approved as a new, member. Establishment of a 200 club was approved by the board with Harold Zimmerman as chairman. The American Legion Home, Pine Grove, will again be the location for the winter meetings. Former Tremont Man New Coach At Minersville Thomas Fitzpatrick, formerly of Tremont, elected basketball coach at a meeting of the Minersville Area Joint School Committee, He will succeed John Baltas.

Fitzpatrick was hired as an elementary teacher in the jointure beginning with the 1962-63 term, He had previously taught and coached at Blue Mountain Joint. The veteran coach was a faculty member earlier at Tremont, Reilly and Branch. TRAIN HITS AUTO, DRIVER UNINJURED While crossing the railroad tracks at the Railroad Street crossing in Donaldson on Friday about 9:45 p. m. an automobile driven by Raymond Breidigan of Reinerton was struck on the right side by a train and dragged about 100 feet.

The car was extensively damaged but the driver was unhurt. SURPLUS FOOD Surplus food will be distributed in Pine Grove at the Borough Hall on Monday, September 24, between the hours of 10:00 a. m. and 1:00 p. m.

Commodities will be wheat flour, processed cheese, lard, milled rice, chopped meat, butter and dried pea beans. All persons receiving surplus commodities are requested to bring containers to carry the food home. NOTICE Dr. William Prescott will be out of town September 15 until 6:00 p. m.

Allen W. Spancake of Middletown, formerly of Pine Grove, graduated from Harrisburg Polyclinic Hospital School of Nursing on Thursday, September 6. Exercises were held at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, Harrisburg. Miss Spancake is a 1959 Middletown Area High School graduate and is employed in the Medical Surgical Department of the Polyclinic tal, Harrisburg. She is the granddaughter of Mr.

and Mrs. Charles C. Miller of Joliett and Mrs. Mary Spancake of Pine Grove. Pine Grove FFA Boys To Compete At Gratz Fair This Friday, September 21, will be School Day at the Gratz Fair.

FFA judging contests will start at 9:30 a. m. and there are three separate contests--Poultry, Dairy and Livestock. All the vocational agricultural boys, approximately 250 in number from Dauphin and Schuylkill County, will compete in one of the three contests for valuable prizes donated by interested individuals and organizations in the home communities. Judging from the Pine Grove FFA Chapter will be: Poultry Contest Charles Tice, Robert Tice and Glenn Lehman.

Dairy Contest Nelson Ditzler, Fred Schach, Joseph Bahm, Joseph Manbeck, Cecil Kutz and Donald Newswanger. Livestock Contest Kenneth Krause, Larry Brown, James Savant, Ernest Wagner, Frederick Leffler, John Lengel, Norman Miller, Dennis Rehrer, Kenneth Snyder, Dale Umbenhauer, Lamar Wolfe, Robert Warner, Rodney Betz and Debs Fortner. Robert W. McLean is a member of the Livestock Committee. The FFA boys and their instructor will make the trip by bus.

Schwartz, native of Pine Grove, who officially became a member of the staff at Coatesville Hospital on September 5, 1962, opened his office for private practice in Coatesville on September 10. Dr. Schwartz, a pediatrician, established his office at 237 East Chestnut Street with Dr.

Robert W. Warner. Dr. Schwartz is a graduate of Pine Grove High School, Gettysburg College and Hahnemann Medical College. He served his internship Montgomery Hospital, Norristown, then served for two years in the U.

S. Air Force. He finished his residency at Hahnemann Medical College in July. In May, 1962, Dr. Schwartz received the following official notice: "I wish to notify you formally of the action of the Board of Trustees May 23 in appointing you to the Faculty of the Hahnemann Medical College with the titles of Assistant in Pediatrics and Junior Attending in Pediatrics.

I speak for the Trustees in extending to you congratulations and good wishes. Sincerely yours, Charles S. Cameron, M.D., President." Dr. Schwartz is a son of Mr. and Mrs.

Slater Schwartz, 60 High Street, Pine Grove. He and his wife, the former Shirley Prescott, and' two children, Drew, 3, and Mary Beth, live at 41 West Lancaster Avenue, Downingtown, Pa. Speech Therapist On Program Monday For Tremont PTA Daniel West, speech therapist the County Superintendent of Schools office, will be the speaker at the meeting of the Tremont PTA on Monday, September 24, at the Tremont High School. All members of the organization are urged to attend as well as those interested in becoming members. Membership is open to all parents as well as all others interested in youths.

Teacher Injures Leg In Fall On Steps At Home Mrs. Mildred Bernd of 15 E. Center Donaldson, sustained a torn ligament in her left ankle and bruises of the body when she fell down the stairs steps at her home on Saturday afternoon. She was admitted to Pottsville Hospital Saturday evening. Mrs.

Bernd is a first grade teacher in the Pine Grove schools. Mrs. George Wynn is substitute teacher. COUNTY DEMOCRATIC PICNIC SUNDAY AT LAKEWOOD PARK Sixty-Two At GOP Rally In Tremont Last Eve A pre-election rally was the meeting of the Tremont helduat lican Club held at the Young Men's Club last evening with 62 persons attending. Superior Court Judge Harold Watkins, the scheduled speaker, was unable to be present.

The speakers were Atty. Howard Stutzman of Tower City, Atty. William Hutchinson of Cressona, Joseph Manbeck Pine Grove, and Attorney George Heffner of Pottsville. Walter Wynn, president of the club, who presided at the meeting, introduced Leonard Thomas, county chairman, who in turn introduced Charles Dimmerling, County Treasurer and chairman of Pottsville Republican Club, and Leonard Hatter, County Clerk of Courts. It was announced that a District meeting will be held on October 29 in Schuylkill Haven and a countywide meeting in Orwigsburg on November 1.

PENSIONED MINERS AND WIDOWS TO MEET IN TREMONT All pensioned miners and widows of miners are asked to attend a meeting on Saturday, September 22, at 2:00 p. m. in the Tremont Fire Company hall. Anthony Ganly, chairman for District 9 of the Pensioned Miners and Widows Committee, says this will be an important session. Governor David Lawrence will be the speaker for the annual Schuylkill County Democratic picnic on Sunday, Septembebe 23.

COUNCIL TO MEET A special meeting of Tremont Borough Council will be held at the borough hall on Monday, September 24, at 7:00 p. m. for discussion on a land fill dump with Matt Mitchell and Mr. Bitter of the State Health Department, Pottsville office.
