A brilliant and expectant audience fllledthe main ball of the University, today, long before tbe hour for opening arrived. The pleasing attire of those assembled, the national colore as a canopy over the stand, and a library lining the walls as a fitting suggestion of the mission of the University all conjoined to elicit enthusiasm as the the drum of the orchestra began the initial overture. President Park called the assembly to order at 10:45, when invocation was offered by Regent Edward Benner.

Not long ago we WERE CHALLENGED About 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon Dr. J.

E. Smith, of Washington, D. made a ghastly discovery on the mountain, about a quarter of a mile west of Ensign Peak. The doctor came to Salt Lake a few days ago on a visit, and yesterday afternoon went upon the hills north oi the city to enjoy the magnificent view of the Valley there obtainable. About the hour named he was going from the base of Ensign Peak down the mountain side towards tbe Warm Springs bath house.

When about half way between the Peak and "tbe cave," he observed a pile of red sand, and out of curiosity went to examine it. It was on the brink of an old stone quarry, which the doctor looked into. There he saw the feet of a man protruding from behind a rock. The man was evidently lying down.and and tola caused the doctor to make a further investigation, which revealed to him that a human being LAY DEAD IN TUE QUARRY. The unknown man was lying in an easy position, as though asleep, but the horrible stench left no doubt that the spark of life had fled, and that the body was in an advanced state of decomposition.

At flrst.it was thought that be was a colored man, as the body had turned perfectly black. It had not been disturbed, however, except that the eyes were eaten away. Dr. Smith did not long remain la the presence of the horrible sight, but reported at about five o'clock to City Marshal Solomon The latter, with Coroner George J. Taylor and others, went to the place, and the body was conveyed to Sexton Patrick's office, where the inquest was called for nine by two preachers, one a Baptist aad th nthpr a MetbodiaL for a debate, on which one of our Elders k.H nnTlnnlT mn.rlt Which WSS I That no maa knows tbat his name is FRAGMENTS.
