John Edward Schuyler, one of the pair of prisoners in this story, who sat in the death chamber of Huner don county jail at Flemlngton one July day seven years ago and heard the iminous pounding of hammers that were shaping his gallows in thfc yard outside, btands a chance today of walking out of his prison cage a free and vindicated man. The other man, the key to Schuyler's freedom, Is Frank Burd, scarce ly 23 years old, wiio began a life of crim with a jail sentence when he was only 7 years old and who has passed the greater part of the past 1G years behind prison bars. Briefly Durd has confessed to the brutal murder of Manning Riley, a young farmer of Sheffield on night of January 19. 1907, a crime for which Schuyler the other prisoner in the story was convicted, and sentenced to be hanged. A few hours before the time of the execution a message came from the board of pardons commuting sentence to life imprisonment.

Frank Burd was arrested at Flem ington on suspicion that he was a highway robber. He was convicted of carrying concealed weapons and sent to the state prison here. While serving out his term he confessed to killing Riley. He said he had attacked Riley in revenge, and did not mean to kill him. Sheriff Holcombe believed enough of the confession to start an Invest! gallon.

He learned among other things that relatives sus pected Burd at the time of the trial, but they were never able to find him. Philadelphia.
