In moments such as these, a man finds himself in the past, present, and future all at once. He is linked to three generations of family, and understands it like no one else. He has heard the words as child. He is speaking the words now.

He knows also the effect that the words are to have. This is the power of continuity that a family possesses. As Will and Ariel Durant stated: "The family is the nucleus of civilization." When a father stands in the volley of echoes of paternal words, he realizes his power to shape humanity. "The family you come from is not as important as the family you are going to have." -Ring lardner Such power is awesome. Yet when a child questions the finality of life, even the most powerful being seems at a loss, for an explanation.
