And, no, this is not a Rocky Long Must Go column. It's a Rocky Long Must Go Forward (and not in circles) column. Back in 1997, Boise State University and the University of New Mexico both lost their football head coaches.

The Broncos' Houston Nutt was hired away by Arkansas; the Lobos' Dennis Franchione left for Texas Christian. In finding replacements, BSU and UNM both reached out for returning heroes. Dirk Koetter, hired at Boise State, was a former Idaho high school and college hero. Rocky Long, hired at New Mexico, was a former Lobos star quarterback. Koetter had made a name for himself as an offensive coordinator, Long as a defensive coordinator.

Equal footing? Not quite, perhaps. The Broncos beat UNM for the second straight season. By Dennis Latta Journal Staff Writer COLUMBIA, S.C. The South Carolina Gamecocks got their money's worth Saturday night.

The Gamecocks had a 21-game losing streak going and needed a team they could beat. They found that team in the New Mexico State Aggies. South Carolina blanked the Aggies 31-0 for the first shutout ever suffered at NMSU team that had bottomed out in by coach Tony SamueL who is starting his Baffled Long Pulls Denson in Second Half 1996 and was on its way back under Nutt; Long inherited a program that had peaked in 7 under Franchione. New Mexico competed in a tougher conference. Still, the situations generally were comparable.

Early last week, in fact, as UNM and BSU prepared to meet Saturday night, Long pronounced the talent on the two teams "about Saturday Boise St. 31 New Mexico 14 fourth season. The $375,000 that USC paid for the game was money well-spent. New Mexico State has long had a reputation for potent offense and suspect defense. Now, there are suspicions on both side of the football.

The Gamecocks averaged 7.9 points a game last season but finished with four touchdowns, a field goal and 353 yards total offense in their 2000 season opener. USC rushed for 240 yards, with Derek Watson gaining 114 yards on 14 carries. The Aggies had only Saturday S. Carolina 31 NMSU 0 Up next Sept. 16: New Mexico State vs.

New Mexico, Aggie Memorial Stadium, 7 p.m. Radio: KOB-AM (770) Online: www.NMSTATE SPORTS.com By Greg Archuleta Journal Staff Writer Boise State certainly lived up to its "Broncos" moniker because it stomped all over the University of New Mexico football team Saturday night. By the time UNM's defense figured out the Broncos' offense, the Lobos were removing hooves from their backsides in a 31-14 Boise State victory before 22,090 fans at University Stadium. At least in this game, UNM's offense didn't get outscored by the opponent's defense as it did by a 7-3 count in the season opener. The Lobos outscored Boise State's defense 14-7 on Saturday.

Too bad for those 24 points by the Broncos' offense. "We played like a very bad football team in the first half," Lobos coach Rocky Long said. "I think it was a combination that they're a pretty experienced football team that executed real well, and we didn't play very well for whatever reason. I don't know what that reason is." UNM again struggled mightily on offense with junior quarterback Jeremy Denson at the helm. The Up next jSept: Mexico vs.

Oregon State, University Stadium, 6 p.m. Radio: KOB-AM (770) Lobos, 0-2 on the season, might have opened a controversy at the position. Long, who earlier this past week said he didn't plan on replacing quarterback Denson if he were to struggle, did just that late in the third quarter, putting in sophomore Rudy Caamano. "I think we have a tough decision to make this week in practice," Long said when asked who'll start in six days against Oregon State. "I'll have to watch (game) tape to find out" Denson drove the Lobos 80 yards in 11 plays for a second-quarter score that cut the BSU lead to 28-7 at the time.

Using the athletic ability the Lobos were counting orr, Denson scrambled for 28 in the drive that resulted in a 32-yard run by fullback Jarrod Baxter into the end See LOBOS on PAGE D10 An embarrassing contrast There was nothing equal, however, about Saturday's 31-14 Boise State victory at University Stadium an outcome that had fans booing in the first quarter and streaming toward the exits by early in the fourth. Nor is there anything equal about Koetter's 17-8 career record at BSU and Long's 7-18 mark at UNM. Where has Koetter done right, and where has Long gone wrong?
