Tuesday. July I I 1972-Lis Mrxii-o-Suri-Nrus-PJjf) Worth A Muench-ion By JOE MUENCH 00004 In MacArthur Little League IHM Hands Mesilla Blues Pennant New Mexico State University always cries about its small slate-funded budgets in everything from chemistry research to fertilizer to athletics. But, if Dr. Gerald W. Thomas, NMSU president, wanted to iilleviale the problem, he could send Aggie Athletic Director and Head Basketball Coach Lou Henson on tour.

Flaying checkers for money. Currently, Henson and his agent are working a deal where Henson would meet the Sicilian grand checker master in Iceland. The Henson-Nick Mattecci match would follow the already famous get-together of chess grand masters Bobby Fischer and Doris Spasbky. Henson and Maltecci have promised to spend just as much time arguing about the lighting, the type of chairs and the room temperatures as Fischer. "If that Americano (Fischer) and the Soviet dude (Spassky) cana maka national headlines abouta when, how and a where their matches will be played, we cana too," Mattecci said.

Henson could not be reached for comment, but did leave word with an NMSU checker spokesman that he plans to tune up his game beginning next week at his summer basketball camp. Any youngsters who can defeat Lou "King Me" Henson at the camp receives his tuition fee back. Mattecci will practice against such top-notch masters as Antonio Rizzi and Don Corleone in the Sicilian capitol of Parlermo. Henson has been a checker master for many years and lately has been practicing his game with Assistant Coach Rob Evans. The Henson dominance in checkers mirrors the art of Muhammad All working his punching bag.

If Fischer-Spassky and the Henson-Mattecci matches make national headlines, it is expected the world's marble masters and parchesi barons will later land in Iceland for world championships.
