were making tneir way to tne lenessee River failing to overtake them he was overpowered while returning to his command, by party of guerrillas secreted in the timber, and he and sever! of his men were killed while one i had both hia legs broken, but- he wasU after- ward cowardly murdered by guerrillas who found him lying helpless in a barn where Borne human citizen bad taken him for safety. But three of the party escaped to tell the sad fate of their companions. While at Clarksville the Regiment was encaged in several expeditions under Major General L. II. Rousseau in pursuit of Forrest and Wheeler, who were attempting the destruction of General Sherman's communica- tions.

During the year '64 the Regiment had some 200 milea of communications to guard and -much heavy patrol duty. During the winter of "64 and 5 the 83d was on proyost duty at Nashville, Tennessee. Before the muster out of the Regiment the following order was received by Col. Smith Commander. Headquarters District Middle Nashville, Ttnn.yMay 31, 1863.
