Tuesday, September 24, 1991 Library Notes INT -A VI Daily Citizen Page 3 Weyco raises $1,500 for Leukemia research On June 22, Weyco Group Inc. Shoe company and union employees combined their shoe leather, efforts and time to raise $1,550 on UFCW Local 651's annual "Walk-For-A-Cure" for Leukemia Research. For the efforts of the walkers, UFCW International sent T-shirts to the participants pictured. Included in the walk were several special kids and their parents. Member Betty Fuderer's 10-year-old daughter, Jenna, was diagnosed to have Leukemia last year.

After a long year of chemotherapy treatments and many trips to the doctor, she was well enough to join her mother in our "Walk-For-A-Cure." Steve Bahls, age 614, who is confined to a wheel chair after surviving bacteria meningitis at age lxh was pushed the five-mile walk by his father, Rick Bahls and accompanied by his grandmother, Lila Bahls, who together raised close to $300. Just short of $400 was raised by Jim Eithne, Duane and Aishling Kehoe. The second top amount of $300 was raised by Ethel 1 xiW: A 0 By PAT T. PAWL Library Director Readers interested in local and area personalities will want to check out the following Beaver Dam Community Library books. Thank you to Marian Helbing for telling me about a new book entitled 'Starclimben the Literary Adventures and Autobiog-raphy of Raymond Z.

Gal-lua" Having now read this book, it is amazing to dis-cover that a Beaver Dam native became a pioneer in the creation of modern science fiction writing. Raymond Gallun, son of Adolph and Martha Zinke Gallun, was born in Beaver Dam on March 22, 1911. When Raymond was a young boy. Adolph Gallun purchased a farm on N. Spring Street.

The land at that time was north of the City limits. Raymond attended the old Lincoln School, and in his book tells of a stay at Beaver Dam's first hospital on Maple Avenue. At the age of 16, while a student at Beaver Dam High School (now the Middle School), he wrote his first two science fiction tales, "The Space Dwellers" and "The Crys-tal Ray," which were published in 1929 in early science fiction magazines. Gallun notes that he worked at the canning factory, the hemp mill, and the battery factory. After high school and during his working years, he did fit one year of studies in at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

HAVING MADE ex- ploratory trips to New Orleans and Mexico, Raymond Gallun left Beaver Dam for good in 1937. He gave his car to his sister Charlotte, and sailed off to pre-war Europe. Raymond Gallun tells of his life and travels in the years since in the book "Starclimber," and I recommend it to Beaver Dam readers. Raymond Gallun's sister and his only Charlotte, worked at the Williams Free Library from May, 1939, to November, 1946. On a recent day off, I visited the Octagon House in Watertown.

The house, its furnishings, and setting are so impressive, that a visit is well worth your while. However, before journeying to Watertown, read the 1984 book "John Richards: The Hill and the Mill" by Sy Quam. The tour guide for the house is Sy Quam who lives on the grounds with his -wife, Judy. He has so much knowledge about the Richards family and the house to share, that any tour will be more meaningful having first read his book. THE FIVE story house of brick construction was built in early 1830s by John Richards.

John Richards, a teacher and lawyer from Massachusetts, built the house for Eliza Forbes the bride he married in 1841. John Richards owned 3 mills on the Rock River, and his house stands on a hill overlooking the River. It was actually the money from her dowry that built the house. The Octagon House was a mansion in its time, and still impresses visitors as a mansion today. Its plan for central heating, and its method of collecting rainwater from the inward sloping roof to run down through the house were early amenities.

Visitors can stand on the first floor and look up to see the cantilever staircase extending up to the fifth floor level. It is an amazing site to see in person, and the subject of a color photograph in the book. Even if you can't travel to Watertown, be sure to check out the book "John Richards: The Hill and the Mill." You can read the history and enjoy the photographs. Thank you to Rev. William Radant for renewing his gift subscription to the magazine "Birder's World" for the Beaver Dam Community Library.

Bird watchers, artists, and nature lovers will enjoy this periodical with its many beautiful color photographs.
