WOLDT Staff Reporter MAYVILLE Two historic downtown buildings are undergoing a much needed repair project The foundations of the Brunke Cigar actory and the old firehouse are both deteriorating causing the buildings to shift The problem dates back to when the buildings were originally moved to their current location on the grounds of the Mayville Historical Society in 1978 When the buildings were moved they were placed on a cement base However according to Mayville HistoricalSociety board member Bill Lee not enough footings were used Over time the base began to break apart and deteriorate inspecting both build ings it was discovered the same thing was happening to the firehouse as well Asa result the Mayville Historical Society is funding a project to repair the faulty work The project which is esti mated to cost $30000 will replace the foundations of both buildings with a new concrete base A concrete slab will then be poured inside the walls constructed atop proper footings was a project that had to be done if we were going to save the said Wayne Larson who is over seeing the project along with Ray Gaddow every going well get ting a lot of help from those who need to work together in order to complete In addition to a new foun dation a 20 square foot space will be left behind the firehouse upon which a stor age shed wdl be built for use by the historical society In order to complete the project both buildings first had to be lifted off their crumbling support struc tures and moved forward so the old work could be cleared away and the new ones poured The new foundation for the firehouse was poured in November and currently the firehouse is back in its origi nal location According to Larson the concrete slab the firehouse will sit on will be poured in the spring along with all portions of the cigar factory repair job I The project which board members hope to have com pleted by July 1 2004 is being funded by the Mayville Historical Society but Lee said
