The people of this town have been entertained for several days past by an Indian evangelist by the name of Mohawk, lie is on his way to the reservations to preach to the Indians there, and Is from New York city.

He will see Geronlmo and his band at Port Jackson when he passes through Mobile and Is himself a member of the Apache tribe. He dresses In the Indian costume when speaking, but at other times dons citizens dress. We have been having fine showers for the past three weeks and the crops are bow ia fine condition, especially corn. The health of our people generally has been good, with only some few cases of sickness. An old lady by the name of Gibson was buried here last week, and Mr.

J. D. Vanoorn, near Flomaton, is not expected to live. Mrs. D.

Wilkinson and children, from Gonzales station, have been spending the week here among friends, and returned home yesterday. The Kev. H. w. Brooks, our station agent, went to MUiigan to preach and win return to-qay.

Mrs. K. m. Mattms and Mrs. J.Black- sher wsre called to Brewton to the bed side of a sick sister who is not expected to recover.

Bev. J. B. Tate, of Powelton, is hold ing a regular monthly service here. The Escambia river Is now very low.

The McMillan Mill Company recently sent some parties to move a few logs above here and they bad to abandon the drive as the nver was entirely too low. I notice an article in thb News head ed "A Sweet Topic" It is a wonder that people who keep bees do not adopt the improved methods. Te first cost is of coarse, a little greater, but the ease or nanaiing ana the greater yield ot honey more than compensates. P. M.

Pritchett ot this place Is the only one who has made use or the improved method and he gets about 48 pounds comb honey or 80 pounds extracted honey from one hive alone. Harrison Sunday, at Molino, and Mrs. Jennings, at Muscogee, have also adopted the 4 V4X4 I4 sections and they report wonaenui success. I doubt if there is any better county in Florida for bee culture thaa Escambia, for there are immense tracts of black gum and gall berry whicn make the finest honey fields, and the honev produced from this source is of a snow white color and almost as clear as water. Above their heads were little clouds of smoke. Their faces were serene and their eyes was the autumnal heaven of content. These people were kind, innocent, gentle and loving. fTbe climate of Cuba la the friendship of the earth and air, and of this climate the sacred leaves were born tbe leaves that breed la the mind ot him who nses them the cloudless, happy days in which they grew. These leaves make friends and celebrate with gentle rite the vows of peace.

They have given consolation to the world. They are tbe companions of the lonely the friends ot the imprisoned of the exiled of beavers ot the winch of fellers ot lores of bookers on of sailors ia the desolate seas of the swinger of the fisherman. These leaves are the friends of the fireside, and their smoke, like incense, rises from myriads of happy homes. Cnba is the smile of the sea. TheProbsWe Platform; The platform to be formulated at Chi cago, a presented In the most recent dispatches, it of a cat ore to meet the view of all conaerratiTe and consistent Democrats. As was to have been ex pected, the issue is likely to be given the prominence, its importance demands, and there can sow belittle doubt that the coming campaign will be fought out upon lines Jong since Jaid down by the crying necessities of the people.

Nothing is easier than to deride the importance in a country such as ours of tariff nothing more difficult than to give reasons is anyway adequate for a failure to equalize the indirect and oppressive tax thos imposed. In spite of all that has been said upon the currency and the siirer question, the painful fact remains that, under existing conditions, any addition to the circulating medium of the country could only result la a corresponding increase in those gigantic fortunes in whose presence in our republic may be found one of the most sfg-Bificant signs ot the times That the plank devoted to the, denun ciation of the. infamous force- bill will meet the views of our people need hardly be said; and no more valid reason for united sad harmonious action among the Democracy of the South can be urged than the necessity tor meeting with unbroken front a political organization which to conquer -would stoop to measures un worthy the genius of American Institu tions. 4 Unlike the platform adopted at oar state convention, it is probable that the national declaration of principles will deal with the silver question in a con eervaUvs at most recommend aa equalizatlea ot gold and silver. And there is, in' fact, little probability that the mere radical, planks In the Tampa platform will receive any such endorsement at Chicago as will encourage oar state conventions to encroach in the future upon, the province of the.

national councils of, the party, It is sot improbable that in the plat form will be embodied a plank demand ing the election "of the president and senators by a direct vote of the people; aad while a step so radical as this seems likely to still further curtail the prerogatives ot the several states, there is, nev ertheless, good reason to believe that it will be sufficiently endorsed by public opinion to lead to its ultimate adoption. The testimonial offered by the Democratic National Convention to Mr. Blaine In adopting a resolution of sympathy with him la the terrible bereavement that has fallen to his lot is without pre cedent is the history of native politics, and Indicates, as nothing else could, the respect commanded by the achievements of the great secretary in the minds of all men, regardless of party.

-w i4 Death has been busy la Jacksonville daring the past few days and Tuesday morning took piare the funeral of George W. Emery, one of the most popular and esteemed of the younger generation In that Tew men In the town bad more friends than Mr. Emery, none more fully deserved them; and his untimely death at the age of 89 leaves both in business and social circles a gap difficult Indeed to filU. la Tuesday's issue of the Times-Union appears' an appreciative and timely editorial notice of the death at an advanced age of that pure and high-minded gentleman, James U. Baker.

Judge Baker was at the time of his death more than 70 years of age, and, although a native of North Carolina, had so long been a resident ot this state that he had be-dome thoroughly Identified with her interests and tally la smpathy with her aspirations. Talklsg of Blaine, the story told by Michael H. De Toong, of the Saa Francisco Chronicle, Is not without Interest. According to De Young who if not always reliable. Is 'generally sufficiently amusing Blaine's sudden retirement from the cabinet was due to the rudeness of as individual present In Injecting into a statement of the secretary's in reference to the Canadian question a charge that the views embodied therein were not such as the president entertained.

This statement is said to have been repeated and in a manner not altogether courteous. Mr. Blaine, whose temper is none of the best, thereupon sprang to his feet, adjourned the meeting, and, leaving the room, sent in his resignation. Who knows? Ths Chicago convention has adopted, with every Indication of earnest approval and sympathy, a resolution extending sympathy to Blaine is his hour of afflic tion. Thb describes the anti-plat formers as being terribly in earnest. Terribly' is good, bat it would be any thing but good for the were the wish to prove father to the thought. CLSYrLAXD has, at all events, won one thing namely, the ill-will ot Tammany and many practical politicians.

Whether or not it was worth winning oa a tip purely mugwump remains to be seen. Is another column will be found a circular to the members of the Tlorida Press Association from B. Pendleton ot Key West, the President of that sse-f al organization, to which is Invited the attention of the fraternity throughout the state. Tux is still harping upon the fall ere of its friends to secure seats in the Tampa convention. It is hardly a harp with a thousand strings, bat in the absence of aa instrument more fully in accord with undiluted Democracy, will probably pass master.

i Tn committee appointed to notify President Harrison of his nomination dropped La at the Whit House Monday aad in the elegant words of the tela gram "discharged Its duty. That's all right, and la November next the united Democracy of thes sovereign states will also "call" upon that exalted functionary and discharge him for an in definite period. There are Just now a lumber of strangers in town; of these some are die tin -tisguished and some sa 3 old, by all odds, be extinguished at the earliest possible moment. Among thus latter la that "general humidity' of which so much is heard aad of which Peaaacola knows so little. To this fact wust be ascribed the depressing inflae ice of the last few days, which, with their close aad oppressive atmosphere, formed so striking a contrast to the aaaa! climate apoa which Pensacoia prides itself.

Political Point era. The Pennsylvania delegation was solid or Cleveland. Gen. John M. Pulmer aaysi "I think I eaa state with considerable aseeraace that Illinois will v-ote for Cleveland.

In spite of Gor nan's protestations ot devotion to Cleveland, his same was all through yesterday discussed as that of one around whom all might rally a a compromise candidate. roast says logical, ticket is Cleveland and Gray. The use of my name Is ail foolishness Cleve land and Gray can carrj Indiana against the Republicans without a doubt." Delegate W. S. Jones, ot Montlcello, says: "I have not made up my mind.

I am tor the man that can win. I may aay I am for Cleveland, If it eaa be demonstrated that he eaa carry New York state. Ed. Murphy, chairman of the New Tork delegation, puts en record the el- low In "la oar best jidgmeat Cleveland's nomination would Imperil the success of the party and expose it to the loss of the electoral vote ot the state." Pasco is is Chicago, but he is not la a comaaaicative mood. To a reporter he would say only this; "We are willing to wait and look the field over.

The man clearly demonstrated to be the strongest one la the sections where strength la needed the maa to whom we are willing to turn." tC; Governor Flower is reported to have been doing missionary work at Chicago with great seel but little success. la his christian labors he has been warmly supported by such distinguished patriots as Amos Cummlngs, late of the New Tork Sun, Parker Bush, Gea.
