They suffocated. Now, the miners are suffering again this time economically as a strike continues beyond the four-month mark. The men are surviving, barely, by cashing in weekly $38 strike benefit checks. They collect food stamps, and poach big game. "Some people have lost their cars and some people are living in their cars," said George Dietz, who operates the Big Creek Store and Bar near what used to be the nation's largest silver-producing mine.

Not an ounce of silver has been mined in the Sunshine since the United Steelworkers of America threw up picket lines 138 days ago. Last year the Sunshine produced more than 5.1 million ounces of.silver. "You won't get anybody to tell you they do it (poach)," said one striker. "But let's put it this way. It tastes awful good when you're hungry, or if your kids are." Mary King, head of the state Health and Welfare office in Kellogg, said the monthly list of food stamp recipients doubled in April, the month after the strike began.

"I bet there's not a single stockholder on food stamps," said laborer Darryl Lunders. "If it wasn't for food stamps, we wouldn't hold out." The latest round of contract negotiations between Sunshine and Steelworkers Local 5089 failed last week. Idaho Gov. Cecil Andrus prompted the negotiations, saying he feared the strike was beginning to have a devastating effect on the area's economy. Outside the gate leading into the Sunshine Mine a cluster of deserted-looking buildings is a trailer used by the pickets who keep their vigil around the clock.

Crawford, 43, said he was Montana regional manager until he moved to Dallas early this Hunter Victim Of Exposure BOZEMAN (AP) A Los Angeles policeman, lost while hunting in heavy snows last October, probably died of exposure to extreme weather, Gallatin County of ficials said Monday. The remains of Donald Harper, 52, were discovered Saturday by searchers in the Big Creek Drainage of the Windy Pass area, about 40 miles southeast of here, authorities said. A hunting vest, bits of clothing, a policeman's badge, a rifle and Harper's police identification card also were found in the immediate area, officials said. Volunteers and sheriff's deputies from Gallatin and Park Counties as well as some of Harper's California friends and relatives entered the remote area on foot last Friday.

The body, which authorities said had been disturbed by animals, was removed from the area on Sunday. The remains were to be flown to Whittier, on Tuesday, officials said. The weekend search was one of several recent efforts to locate the man's body.
