14 THE BAKERSFIELD TUESDAY, JUNE 30, 1925 GAME'S TOP PINCH-HITTER By BILLY EVANS HERE Is no more difficult role in baseball than that of pinch-hlttor. Tanked suddenly from the bench, "With no opportunity to look over a few pitches, facing some star wirier going at top speed, the tank of the substitute Jrntter Is indeed a difficult one. To Ernie Johnson of the New York Americans rightly belongs the title or champion plneh-hltter. Johnson; a left-handed batter, is called upon by Manager Hugglns more often In a pinch than any other utility man on the clnb. In a sense, Miller Huggins regards Johnson as a mascot.

In the last few years he has come through so orten In the pln9h, thereby starting rallies that have won games, that he invariably gets the assignment when a pinch hit Is much desired by the Yankees. Record as Pinch-Hitter Last season In a run of IB times nt bat, Johnson managed to hit safely In 12 of his trips to the Plate. In the collection of pinch-hits wore a number of drives good for extra bases. This season, while his record up to date has not been quite Impressive, yet It shows the way to the rest of the pinch-hitters In the majtors. In 10 times at has made four safe hits, two of them doubles nnd two homo runs.

Making a home run In a pinch Is certainly doing the unexpected; Johnson has twice delivered a surprise. Perhaps his most dramatic performance a pinch-hitter was staged in n. recent game with the Cleveland club. With Cleveland leading, 8-2, and two men out In the last half of the ninth, Johnson was called upon by Manager Hugg-lns to take up what seemed lost cause. Melodrama to This Getting the count to two balls and two strikes, Johnson hit a well-pitched ball by Benny Karr.

Since Karr had the edge he wanted to make Johnson hit a bad ball. The pitch was shoul- dw high and about Inches outstrte. It Is a well-known fact that if a batter connects soundly with a bad 'pitch, the ball travels faster and IK Jiariler to handle than one right 'tltvdijgh the heart. jonnson hit this ball on a line between two of the game's greatest fielders, Jatnleson and Speaker. It trav- cled to the mos-t remote corner of the Yankee stadium.

By fast sprinting Johnson beat the relay for a homo run. That home run tied up the game and New York managed to win out in extra Innings. It sure was a thriller. Picki on the Cripple Johnson has no pet theories nil pinch-hitting. Ho.

likes to got the pitcher in tho hole if possible and then pick on the cripple. I-le doesn't lio- iieve In swing-Ing- at the first pltcn or two unless the edge is with tho pitcher. Being a hard man to pitch to and having a good eye, Johnson Invariably lias the pitcher In the lioln. Then he whales away at the soft one. To his faculty of setting the pitch or in the hole ftnd then iiic-kinp on Hie cripple, is Johnson's explanation of the unusual success he has enjoyed in the most difficult role In baseball pinch-hitter.

PRISONER STUDENTS LONDON. Out of 200 prisoners In Maidstono Jail, 40 are studying various subjects, including French, Span- sh, literature, engineering and agriculture. "Man Drowned!" This is a familiar headline in npwspapers all over the country during '-he hot weather. Thousands of lives are needlessly sacrificed each year because of carelessness and Inability to swim. Protect your own life and those with whom you" associate.

The two steps necessary are: first, learning how to swim; and, second, Itnowing: what action to take to help those In peril of drowning. By study and practice of the methods outlined in the Swimming Booklet which this bureau offers free, swimmers of ordinary ability should be prepared In case of necessity to bring- a drowning person to safety. Send two cents In stamps to cover the return postage on your copy. Frederic J. HoHkin, Director, The Bakersfleld CaHfornlaii Information Bureau, Washington, I inclose herewith two cents In stamps for return postage a free copy of the Swimming Booklet.

NIGHT PLOWING NOW plowing can be done easily with new type of tractor which Is equipped with a powerful searchlight. map shows the heavens as they appear nt 0 p. m. July 1 or 8 p. m.

July 15 in 35 degrees north latitude. As a change of five or ten degrees in latitude makes little change in the appearance of the heavens the map may be used to advantage in all parts of the United States nnd southern Canada. To view the constellations as they appear in the heavens hold the map over the head or inverted with the top toward the north. Corona Borealis, the Northern Crown, lies on the meridian directly south of the zenith at this Mme. Next to it on the west is the kite-shaped constella- ton of Bootes with its brilliant orange- colored Arcturus, which lies in line with the handle of the Big in the about SO degrees toward the south.

Directly east of Corona Borealia is the huge constellation of Hercules arid next to Hercules on the northeast is the small constellation of Lyra, tho Harp, which the brilliant blue-white of the most beautiful stars of the northern heavens. In the far southern skies this month nppenrs the brilliant zodiacal constellation of Scorpio, the Scorpion, 'with its long line of stars representing- the tall of the Scorpion trailing in a southeasterly direction to the horizon. In the heart of tho Scorpion shines the fiery Antares, which is re- SS'tlom LftTITUOE puted to be the greatest of all the stars in size, with a diameter of foul- hundred million miles. Antares is so far away from the earth that Its' light, traveling at the rate of miles per second, takes over throe centuries to reach us. The planet Venus Is now In the evening sky and will be found in the northwest immediately after sunset.

On the evening of July 10 the three planets, Venus, Mercury and Mars, will be in close conjunction. Mars is now too faint because of Its great distance from the earth to be visible to the naked eye when so unfavorably placed for observation In tho evening twilight, but Mercury, which is us brilliant as Vega, should be visible close to Venus. On July 28 Mercury reaches Its greatest distance of more than 27 degrees east of the sun and. should he seen In the evening twilight In the northwest close to Venus and Regulus In Leo. Jupiter is now in Sagittarius in fine position for observation throughout the night.

On July 10 it comes into opposition with the sun and will then be above the horizon from sunset to sunrise. Saturn Is also well in view in the evening sky in July and will be found over in the southwest in the early evening between Libra and Virgo. B. P. O.
