Rozelle called himself "the commissioner of all of football, owners and players." Upshaw cited a story in' The Times-Picayune of New Orleans last year in which Finks, responding to a court ruling on free agency, was quoted as saying, "The NFLPA is bent on destroying the NFL." "I know Finks a long time," Upshaw said.

"That statement concerns me," Finks, asked to comment on the article, said through a spokesman that he would not say anything involving the commissioner's job. But the spokesman said that Finks was quoted accurately and that "these were his views." The 11 dissident owners have added a 12th voice, Bud Adams of the Houston Oilers, who missed the nomination vote because of travel problems. In addition to Bowlen, Lynn and DeBartolo, he joins Norman Braman of the Philadelphia Eagles, Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys, Robert Irsay of the Indi "This will expand it. This step on Monday or Tues-day is a step in the initial direction, I hope." Bowlen added that even though this procedure could take time, getting a new commissioner is not as critical as getting a commissioner the owners can agree on. Several owners have admitted privately that they were not in favor of Finks for reasons other than the selection procedure.

One owner put the number at five who had disagreed with the nomination. One of the reasons was Finks' age. Another owner said that Finks did not have broad-based managerial experience, especially in dealing with the television networks. Rozelle selected the two heads of the search committee, the Giants' Wellington Mara, president of the National Conference, and the Kansas City Chiefs' Lamar Hunt, who heads the American Conference. They then picked four longtime league members: Dan Rooney of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Art Modell of the Cleveland Browns, Ralph Wilson of the Buffalo Bills, and the Packers' president, Robert J.

Parins. Another major figure with reservations about Finks is Gene Upshaw, head of the National Football ago to decide whether the league will go ahead with its proposed international spring league next year. Bowten said that he, Mike Lynn of the Minnesota Vikings and Edward J. DeBartolo Jr. of the, San Francisco 49ers would meet with the six-man search committee Monday or Tuesday.

They will, question the committee not only about Finks, but also about the other candidates it listed as finalists: Willie Davis, a former Green Bay Packers star now in private business; Robert Mulcahy, head of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority; Paul Kirk, a Washington attorney and former head of the Democratic National Committee; Paul Tagliabue, the league's chief outside counsel, and an unnamed businessman described as head of an international corporation. "I spoke to Commissioner Rozelle about it and this is what we've come up with," said Bowlen. When asked whether this meant the search procedure would start again, be said: "The selection process was flawed from the beginning. NEW YORK (NYT) The search for a new National Football League commissioner has been reopened and this time the group of dissident owners will become more involved in the selection process. Nine days ago, owners of 11 teams, most of whom were relatively new to the league, refused to ratify the nomination of Jim Finks as commissioner to replace Pete Rozelle.

Nineteen votes were required for approval, but two rounds of balloting mustered only 16 each time. Finks, 61, the president of the New Orleans Saints, was the only name proposed by the six-man search committee, composed of older owners. The dissidents, all of whom abstained from voting, said they should have been given more choices and should have been represented on the search committee. Since then, Rozelle has worked behind the scenes to bring the groups together. He may have succeeded.

Barry Winford drew a one-out walk from Trappers starter Scott Singe-lyn, 4-1, and ensuing singles by Darin Hays and Tim Morrow loaded the After Randy Marshall popped out in foul territory, Craig Newkirk drew a walk to force Winford home with a run and keep the bags full. Garcia then pasted a two-run single to tie the score, but was thrown out himself at second trying to stretch the hit into a double. The play ended the inning.

The Trappers' last lead was a 5-4 advantage taken in the fifth inning. It came on a single by Giustino after Beaulac walked and was balked to second by Shiflett. Again, the lead held up for-an inning. The Copper Kings took control in their half of the sixth, just after Dave Perez, 2-2, had spelled Shiflett on the mound in the fifth. Newkirk worked Singelyn for a leadoff walk and then drew an errant pickoff throw from him.

Newkirk raced to third base before the throw was chased down in right field. The rattled Sinelyn uncorked a wild pitch and Newkirk scored. Garcia then walked. After Jim pinch-hitter Jim Clinton flied out hard to center field, Salt Lake City Manager Barry Moss removed Sinelyn and installed Tony St. John on thehill.

Harris greeted the reliever with a double to right. Dan Peltier followed with a two-run single and Butte led 7-5. The inning ended with Winford grounding out and Hays flying out to center. The Copper Kings', offense took over that inning to support the fine relief job of Perez. day off on Sunday, then host Idaho Falls Monday and Tuesday.

Poca-tello follows the Braves to town, playing the Copper Kings at Alumni Coliseum four games Wednesday through Friday. SALT LAKE CITY ab row, the club's longest victory streak of the season. It also gave the Copper Kings a three-game sweep of their homes tand against the Trappers. And, it greatly tightened the Southern Division pennant race, too. Salt Lake City still remains atop the division standings, but by just the thread.

The Trappers, 14-10 for the season, are a half-game up on the 13-10 Copper Kings. When the series began, Salt LakeXJity owned a 4-game cushion. "This team showed a lot of character tonight," Bump Wills, Butte manager, said. "We came back when we had to. That was a good sign." Salt Lake City took three leads in the contest.

But, none stood. The Trappers went up 1-0 in their first at-bats when Pat Waid and Mike Grace tagged Butte starter Chris Shiflett's first two pitches for a single and double, respectively, then got a run-scoring groundout from Gerard Giustino. Butte struck back to tie in the bottom of the first as Salt Lake City shortstop Ray Karczewski lost Manny Garcia's high popup in the sun for a double and Don Harris then delivered Garcia with a sacrifice fly. The Trappers were determined not to be swept, though, not to let this game get out of hand as in the 21-8 thumping they suffered Thursday night at the hands of the Copper Kings. The right-hander worked 3 23 innings and gave up nothing, retiring 11 straight batters three of which he struck out. He got some defensive help, too. Peltier's diving catch of Beaulac's sinking liner in left field was highlight film material. And Clinton, the third shortstop Butte used in the contest, showed how to erase a mistake with style. First, he bobbled a bouncer that let Max Tripodi reach base with none out in the eighth.

Then, immediately, Clinton roamed to the first-base side of second to snare Karc-zewski's grounder. Clinton stepped on the bag to force Tripodi and then to first-baseman Randy Marshall to nip Karczewski and complete the double play. "Probably, the biggest defensive play of the game," Wills said. "I really like Jim Clinton. He can play anywhere." Clinton, a product of Lewistown, has played all four infield positions for the Copper Kings this season and, Wills said, can play the outfield and catcher, too.

Geoff Flinn started Friday's game at shortstop, but was hit in the ankle by a pitch in the first inning and was taken out of the contest. Jose Oliva took over, but Clinton pinch-hit for him during a Butte scoring threat. Flinn should be back in the lineup on Saturday, Wills said. The Copper Kings' last run came in the eighth as Harris singled off of the third-base bag, took second on a wild pitch, third on a groundout and crossed the plate on a balk called against Salt Lake City reliever Scott Bray. The Trappers had one last gasp in the ninth and it made everyone rooting for Butte gasp as well.

Sanderson smacked Butte reliever Mark Young's first pitch over the left-field wall for a monstrous solo home run. Young then retired Waid on fly ball and Grace on a comebacker to the mound. Beaulac prolonged the inning with a base hit, but Giustino flied out to left and victory was secured. Young posted his fourth save. The game was attended by 1,075 fans, including a large contingent from Anaconda and "Mr.

Baseball" Butte's 97-year-old Bill Cullen, who received a warm reception in the stands. Catcher Buddy Micheu packed his bags Friday night. He's joining the Class AA Tulsa Drillers of the Texas League Saturday, being promoted by the parent club Texas Rangers because of a rash of injuries suffered by the Tulsa catching corps. The Copper Kings go on a short road trip, now. They play the Idaho Falls Braves in a doubleheader Saturday with- right-handers Joe Eis-chen, 2-2, and Steve Rowley, 0-1, drawing the pitching starts for Butte.

The Orioles have reportedly offered McDonald between $255,000 and $275,000 as a signing bonus with a guarantee of his being called up to the majors in September and an invitation to spring training next February.
