6 Th Montana Standard. Butt. Tuesday. July 4, 1 989 ft iter ikJ La, By Jim Edgar tandwd SporU Witar Kings light off fireworks early For all of the hitting, base running, scoring and walking that went on in Sunday night's game, it didn't exactly break any recent Pioneer League records. But, it sure was a good average.

7 The-Butte- Copper Kings humbled the Billing Mustangs 26- to avenge a 21-9 thrashing they took on Friday, and the hometown fans 7 Jin eeV naa a lot of fun watching the Kings cross home plate. The two teams will meet again Tuesday night, in Helena, with the starting time scheduled for 7 p.m. Dan Peltier capped a three-for-three night with a two-run homer in the seventh inning to give the Butte Copper Kings a SHJ win over the Helena Brewers Monday night, top- fing the fireworks celebration atop ig Butte hill, i- While the fireworks were lighting up the 'M' for Montana the Brewers and the Copper Kings were lighting up the scoreboard, in a seesaw contest that saw first one team and then the other take the lead. Neither team could put the other away, and after the Kings finally got the winning run, Mark Young came on to pitch the final two innings for a save, preserving the win for John third pitcher that the Kings used.

The Kings Jumped ahead in the top of the first on a one-out two-run-homer by Donald Harris, whose drive to left field fell in just inside the foul pole. Manny Garcia led off the inning with a walk and stole second to eliminate possibilities of a double play, and after Geoff Flinn was whiffed, Harris took a 2-1 pitch for a ride. In the second inning the Brewers grabbed a 3-2 lead. Mike Sarbaugh led off with a single and scored on Angel Diaz' triple. Diaz tied the game on a sacrifice fly, the second out of the inning, but then Kevin Tannahill reached on an error by shortstop Jose Qliva, Went to second when Regge Brown walked, and scored on Troy Haugen 'a single.

The Kings worked ttieir way back in front in the bottom of the second. Daren Hayes started things with a walk and went to second on a wild pitch by Brewers starter Bill Brake-ly. A walk to Oliva and a one-out single by Flinn tied the contest. Kings manager Bump Wills then brought Graves in with runners-on first and second, and the Chickasaw, Oklahoma native registered the first of seven strikeouts to stop the uprising.

The Kings got a pair of runs back in the fifth and one more in the sixth to put them in a position to win the game. Then, in the Kings' lucky seventh' frame, Harris singled with one out and stole second. Brewers Manager Dusty Rhodes then opted for Tim Wilson to take over the pitching chores, giving him the chance to face Peltier, who had already singled twice and walked twiceJPeltk, er jumped on the second pitch and drove it over the left field wall for a two-run homer, his third of the season. Young then came on to finish up for the Kings, striking out three and with XJliva scoring on a single by Harris. It took the two teams over an hour to play the first two innings, as they combined to send 28 batters up to check in with the umpire.

In the top of the third, the' Brewers plated five runs, with Chris Shiflett, who had relieved starter Brian Romero to start the inning, giving up five hits and two walks before Graves came on to' register the final out. Shiflett's throwing error scored the first run after he had given up a one-out single to Mike Sarbaugh, moved him to second on a wild pitch, and after yielding a single to Angel Diaz, committing a throwing error trying to pick Diaz off second. Sarbaugh scored and Diaz went all' theway to then balked, allowing the second run to score, and a walk to Darrin White, coupled with a passed ball put another run in scoring position. r-- Although the Mustangs outhit the Copper Kings 1S-16, 14 of their came in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings when they scored all eight of their runs. One of the bright spots for the Copper Kings pitchers was that they Surrendered just two walks all night, against one of the better hitting Pioneer League teams, During those same three innings, the Mustangs failed to deliver seven base runners, leaving 12 stranded for the night. Jose Borges bore down in the fourth and got three consecutive outs with runners on second and third, Chris Shiflett recorded two outs with baserun-ners saddled up on first and third in the fifth, and Eric Bickhardt left the bases loaded in the sixth when he fanned Brian Nichols to end the inning. In contrast, the Kings stranded a total of seven, five in the first four innings. And, of the four-baggers that were parked, two were grand slams, three were three-run shots, and one was a solo smack, that by Geoff Flinn to get things started in the seventh inning'.

In the seventh, the Kings parked four homers, which accounted for 11 runs scoring, as they sent 17 batters to the plate. Not all of the batters got base hits in the but everyone in the starting lineup got at least one hit before the game was over, with Daren Hays leading the bat attack with four. Hays got two RBIs for the game, but both came in the sixth Inning, when he capped a six-run outburst with his third single of the night to score Don Harris and Dan Peltier. The Kings also drew 15 walks to go along with their 16 hits, Barry Winford leading the free-pass patrol with four to go along with a base hit and a groundout. And, it was Winford, drawing his second walk of the night, who scored the tying run in the fifth inning, as.

Mustangs' pitcher Chris-Keim moved him from base to base. Keim started by walking Winford to lead off the inning. Then, he allowed Winford to steal second, uncorked a wild pitch to advance him to third, and then gave him a free pass to the dugout with another wild pitch. The Kings started the inning trailing 6-5, despite a grad-slam homer by Peltier in the third inning. Starting Mustangs pitcher Trey Wilburn set the table for Peltier by walking Manny Garcia, allowing Flinn tp reach on an error and then walking Harris.

Peltier then rode a 2-1 pitch over the center-field wall, 410 feet from home plate. Garcia, who had scored to start the home half of the first, led the parade home and the Kings were sitting on a 5-0 lead. However, the Mustangs came right back and scored two runs in the top of the fourth and added four more in the fifth to take a brief lead. K.C. Glllum got the Mustangs started in the third with a single, and scored on a triple by Steve Vondran.

Vondran followed Gillum across the plate when Kings shortstop Jose Oliva overthrew a relay to third from right field, with the ball going into the dugout. In the top of the fifth, Chris Gill hit a one-out single and scored on a double by Gillum. A single by Vondran put Gillum on third, and he came on home on a balk call to Chris Shiflett, who had taken over from Kings starter Jose Borges. Andy Duke then delivered Vondran with a two-run homer, stroking an 0-2 pitch over the right field wall. After Winford tied the contest in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Mustangs regained the advantage in the top of the sixth.

Back-to-back singles by Scott Pose and Gill put runners on first and second, a flyball to center advanced both runners, and with two-outs, Duke hit a two-run single. That, however, the end of the scoring for the Mustangs, while the Kings were just getting loosened up. If a pitcher, at any level, were to pitch a ho-hitter and face the minimum number of batters, he would only throw to 27. In just the sixth and seventh innings however, the Mustangs saw a total of 28 batters come to the plate, with three different hurlers trying to put out the fire. Amongst them, in the two innings, they surrenderd nine walks, one hit batsman, five home runs, one sacrifice fly, and six singles.

In those same two innings, seven Copper Kings scored two runs apiece, while Peltier and Winford made the circuit three times. Including his fifth inning run, Peltier scored four runs in four consecutive at bats. A game like that only happens once in a while, but when it does, the crowd looks for more. And, although there were 782 fans in the stands on Sunday night, five years from now the attendance will have swollen to over 2,000. two hits each came from Johnson, Matosich and Tony Huot.

DeTonancour and Matosich swatted doubles. "We finally showed some patience with the bat for a change," Coach Matosich commented. The A's are 12-2 in league play and 14-5 for the season.
