D2 Missoulian, Saturday, May 19, 2001 SCOREBOARD Avs rebound in OT to take wild one from Blues, -8 here, that's for sure. "This is going to be the ultimate test." Joe Sakic, scoreless in Games 2 and 3, had a goal and an assist for the Avalanche. Steven Reinprecht and Ray Bourque also scored for Colorado, 5-2 on the road in the playoffs. The Avalanche had been 0-3 in overtime in the postseason. "We were due to win one in OT," Bourque said.

"I'm sure happy it happened. But it's far from being over because we know what kind of team they have." Pierre Turgeon had two goals and Jamal Mayers forced overtime for the second straight game for the Blues, who rallied against Patrick Roy. The Blues won 4-3 in double overtime in Game 3 on a goal by Scott Young. Mayers, who had eight goals in the regular season, tied it on the Blues' first shot of the third. Mayers, stationed just outside the crease, tapped a setup from behind the netbyJochen Hechtjust inside the far post at 58 seconds.

By R.B. FALLSTROM Associated Press ST. LOUIS -This time, Stephane Yelle didn't miss the net. Yelle, who hit the goal post in overtime of Game 3, scored on a deflection at 4:23 of overtime as the Colorado Avalanche beat the St. Louis Blues 4-3 on Friday night to take a 3-1 lead in the Western Conference final.

Yelle redirected a shot by Rob Blake past Roman Turek, who had recovered nicely after allowing goals Yelle said. "But the next day I knew we had a big game and I had to get ready. It feels good. I can't remember the last time I had a game-winner in overtime." The Avalanche, who have lost in the conference finals the last three years, can wrap up the series Monday night. Colorado was last in the finals jn 1996, and won the Stanley Cup that season.

"We don't feel great right now," Blues forward Scott Mellanby said. "We're not doing cartwheels in on three consecutive shots in a 1:18 span midway through the first period. It was Yelle's first goal of the playoffs. "It's so great for Yelle to get the winning goal after missing that open net," coach Bob Hartley said. "Rob Blake made an unbelievable play, and when you drive at the net you give yourself a chance to tip some pucks, and that's what happened." After Game 3, Yelle said his failure probably would stick with him for a while.

After an opening-round loss, Dawson Community College bounced back to win three straight during the first two days of the NJCAA Division III softball national championship. The Glendive school, which entered the double-elimination tournament with a 19-21 record, can win the national title with three victories Saturday.

Dawson opened the tournament with a 4-3 loss in nine innings to Broome CC (Binghamton, N.Y.) on Thursday before beating Nassau CC (Garden City, N.J.) 8-0. On Friday, Dawson edged Bookedalc CC (Lincroft, N.J.) 2-1 and beat Broome 8-3. National Woods trails by nine at Deutsche Bank HEIDELBERG, Germany (AP) Tiger Woods played an unspectacular 1 1 holes while New Zealand's Michael Campbell built his lead to five strokes in the Deutsche Bank tournament Friday before the second round was suspended because of darkness. Campbell was at 14 under after also playing only 1 1 holes. Woods was 5 under for the tournament after 29 holes, putting him nine back.

He opened with a 69. Woods, the 1999 winner, snapped a string of 12 straight pars with an eagle at the par-5, 588-yard fifth hole. He then birdied the seventh, but bogeyed the 10th, leaving him 2 under for the day. Argentina's Eduardo Romero was second at 9 under after 27 holes, and South Africa's Ernie Els, the two-time U.S. Open champion, and England's Greg Owen were 8 under.

Pavin looking to end dry spell at Colonial FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) Corey Pavin shot a 6-under 64 to take the second-round lead in the Colonial, where he earned the last of his 14 PGA Tour wins in 1996. Pavin, also the 1985 Colonial winner, had an 8-under 132 total. Phil Mickelson, the defending champion and first-round co-leader, was a stroke back along with Brett Quigley. Mickelson's 68 included an uncharacteristic three-putt down the stretch, while Quigley birdied the final hole for a 64. Pavin twice had three straight birdies including the first three holes and saved par out of the sand three times in a four-hole stretch.

It was his best PGA Tour round since shooting a 64 during the second round at Colonial two years ago. Rocco Mediate shot a career-best 62, one stroke off the course record and a 10-stroke improvement over his opening 72, to move to 6-under 134. Dougherty has two-stroke lead KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Ed Dougherty, a pro since 1969 who has only one regular and one senior tour victory, shot a 10-under 62 to take the first-round lead in the TD Waterhouse Championship. After heavy rain the day before, the seniors were also allowed to lift, clean and place their balls in the fairways.

Ted Goin was two strokes back at 64, followed by Argentina's Vicente Fernandez and defending champion Dana Quigley at 65. Local favorite Tom Watson, who lost to Quigley by a stroke a year ago, started bogey, double-bogey but recovered with four straight birdies on the back nine for a 70. LPGA's Champions Classic washed out BEAVERCREEK, Ohio (AP) After a 2Vrhour suspension of play, the first round of the LPGA Champions Classic was washed out by heavy rain and lightning. The scheduled 54-hole event will be shortened to 36 holes, with no cut. All scores were erased, with the entire field starting fresh Saturday.

Chargers sign Rogers, release Moreno SAN DIEGO (AP) Sam Rogers, a starting outside linebacker for Buffalo for the last five seasons, agreed to a five-year contract with the San Diego Chargers on Friday. To make room on the 80-man roster, the Chargers released quarterback Moses Moreno. The Chargers picked Moreno's younger brother, Zeke, a linebacker from Southern Cal, in last month's draft. Doug Flutie is the new starter, while second-round draft pick Drew Brees and CFL free-agent Dave Dickenson will compete for the backup job. The Chargers have now gotten rid of the three quarterbacks who combined for an NFL-high 30 interceptions in 2000, when San Diego was a league-worst 1-15.

Ryan Leaf was waived and picked up by Tampa Bay, and Jim Harbaugh left as a free agent and was signed by Detroit. Moreno played in six games last year, starting twice. He threw for 241 yards and two interceptions. Wallace takes pole for The Winston CONCORD, N.C. (AP) With just enough daylight left for drivers to navigate their way around the track, Rusty Wallace had the fastest qualifying effort Friday night to take the pole for The Winston.

A power outage at Lowe's Motor Speedway darkened everything at the track just before sundown, and the problem had yet to be fixed when qualifying began for NASCAR's all-star race. Track officials said an electric substation in nearby Harrisburg was struck by a car, knocking out power in the surrounding area. The lights went out at 6:20 p.m., a little over an hour before the 19 cars qualified for Saturday night's race. Wallace, one of the first drivers out, had enough light to complete a pit stop and run three laps on the 1.5-mile track with an average speed of 140.458 mph. Bobby Labonte was second at 140.385.

Rookie Kevin Harvick, driving the late Dale Earnhardt's car, was third at 140.080. Dale Earnhardt the defending champion in the 70-lap shootout, qualified 15th. The drivers were upset when the "Happy Hour" practice session was canceled, robbing them of an opportunity to get in valuable laps under cool night conditions. The Winston is typically viewed as warmup for next week's Coca-Cola 600, also run under the lights. "I think we should stay here until midnight to get the practice in, but it's not up to me," Wallace said.

"For me, this is the big tuneup for the Coca-Cola 600, so this practice time is critical." Jeff Gordon, 10th in the qualifying, was among the most vocal drivers when NASCAR called off the practice session. "All we come here for is practice time at night," Gordon said. "Losing it, or practicing in the day is useless here." Second Round Leaderboard -14 M. Monarchos' Jockey Jorege Chavez may not have won a Triple Crown race before the win two weeks ago at Louisville, but that isn't exactly a negative. The last two jockeys to ride horses to the Triple Crown were Jean Croquet aboard Seattle Slew in 1977 and Steve Cauthen aboard Affirmed, Both would win just these three Triple Crown events in their riding careers. For the ninth time in Preakness history a horse will be entered by a female trainer.

Jennifer Leigh Pederson will saddle Griffinite, a 50-to-1 shot. The best finish by a horse trained by a woman'in the Preakness was Casual Lies, which finished third for Shelly Reilley in 1 992. Dollar BUI is a long shot, but a win would give jockey Pat Day a share of the record for most Preakness wins. Eddie Arcaro has six Preakness wins. Day won five from 1985 to 1996.

Pat Day Is the only jockey in the last 50 years to win consecutive Preakness races. Day rode winners from 1994 to 1996. Jerry Bailey aboard Congaree has a good shot at matching that feat. Point Given many want to make up for a loss in his family. In 1995, Thunder Gulch took third in the Preakness but won both the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont.

Thunder Gulch is the sire of Point Given.
