Jerry Apodaca voter approval of succession amendment in November wouldn't necessarily mean he would seek re-election. He said that decision would be made In early 1978, the last year of bin current four-year term. The proposed constitutional amendment, which will be voted on in the general election, would allow the governor and other elective state officials to seek reelection to a second successive four-year term.

The officials now are limited to a single four-year term. His comments were in response to questions from editors. The governor said he believes the amendment will pass, but stopped short of saying he would be a can didst? if ft does. He did say, however, that he enjoys the challenge of being governor. And a longer tenure in office would enable a governor to achieve more ambitious, long- range programs, he said.

"If you want to be a caretaker governor, one year is enough. And we have had a a Apodaca Mid. "I don't want to be one of them. "If the amendment pastes, I certainly would be considering running for re-election. If it dousn'l, you'll see a retired politician at an early age," he said.

In response to a question about the possibility of extending succession to an unlimited number of terms, Apodaca said he wouldn't be interested in serving more than two successive terms. And in the event the amendment falls, he said he would not be interested in running for governor again after laying out a term. "It's just too difficult to put an administration together," he said. He also was asked about the possibility of his seeking election to the U.S. Senate in 1U7U if the amendment fails.

He said a Senate seat would be the only other political office he would be interested in, but added because of family considerations he is not sure he would want to move to Washington. "Moving my family to Santa Fe was difficult. It was hard on the five children," he said. "I'm just not Interested in moving them one more lime to somewhere else." Apodaca said he would not mind returning to the business world. "I'm still in business and business interests me.

At the age of 44, I would have no reluctance in leaving public life, "he said. Unity Behind National Demo Governor Gives Views Party Choice Urged by Governor By BILL FEATHER Associated Press Writer ALBUQUERQUE (AP) New Mexico will send a divided delegation to the Democratic National Con- that begins July 12 in New York City. Gov. Jerry Apodaca, speaking (o the Democratic State Convention Saturday after the delegate-selection process was completed, pleaded with the party to unite behind whichever candidate is chosen.

He said Democrats have only themselves to blame for the loss of the presidency in 1968 and 1972. "Richard Nixon did not win In 1966. We defeated Hubert Humphrey," Apodaca said. "Richard Nixon did not win in 1972. We defeated George McGovern." The most bitter controversy at the state convention arose not over the selection of national convention delegates, but in the contest for national committeewoman.

Mrs. Dessie Sawyer of Tatum, who has served on the national committee 24 years, Was defeated by Mrs. Zora Hesse of Albuquerque. But there was an attempt made by the group supporting Mrs. Sawyer to close the contest on a harmonious note.

Former state Sen. C. Fincher Ncal of Hobbs, who nominated Mrs. Sawyer for re-election, went to the Convention Center podium as the roll call of counties indicated Mrs. Sawyer was defeated, and moved that Mrs.

Hesae be elected by acclamation. His motion was approved with only scattered opposition. Mrs. Hesse was leading in the rail call vote 505 to 404 at that point and the 490-member Bernalillo County delegation had not yet voted. "As national committeewoman, I feel I represent the entire state," Mrs.

Hesse said. Selection of the 18 delegates to the national convention almost went according to preconvention projections. Jimmy Carter of Georgia won eight national delegates; U.S. Rep. Morris Udall of Arizona won six, and four were named on an uncommitted basis.

Prior to the convention, Udall had been expected to win five delegates and the uncommitted group had been expected to win five. But the uncommitted state convention group from Congressional Dist. 2 (southern and northwest New Mexico) was not numerous enough to make up the minimum 13 per cent required to win a delegate from the district. The group was compelled to shift to either Carter or Udall. Udall won 66 of the 81 previously uncommitted delegates and Carter gained only nine.

Six declined to switch their' positions. As a result, Carter won four of the seven delegates from Dist. 2, as had been expected, and Udall won three one more than expected The division in Dist. 1 exclusive of Bernalillo County, and in Bernalillo County, was as had been indicated by the results of county conventions April 29. In DW.

1 Carter won two delegates, two were uncommitted and Udall won one. In Bernalillo County it was two for Carter, two for Udall and two uncommitted. Eighteen alternates also were selected in the same proportion in the three districts. Delegates and alternates met briefly after the close of the state convention and scheduled another meeting in Albuquerque June 5. They will choose a delegation chairman at the meeting and decide on national convention committee assignments.

New Mexico Is entitled to only one member on each of the three national convention ALBUQUERQUE AP) Gov. Jerry Apodaca says his replacement of Fern Sawyer on the Stale Fair Board last year and her mother's defeat as Democratic national i a this weekend were unrelated. Apodaca, guest speaker Sunday at the Associated Press Managing Editors shirtsleeve seminar, made the comment in response to a question. "Fern Sawyer made one big mistake she supported Joe Skeen," Apodaca said. Skeen was the Republican candidate for governor whom Apodaca defeated in November 1874.

Fern Sawyer is a Democrat "Fern Sawyer didn't deserve that appointment politically, and there comes a committees rules, platform and credentials. The assignments will be made among the Carter, Udall and uncommitted groups. hcufti DBCCV change," Apodaca said. He also said it was a new Democratic party that selected the national committeewoman from New Mexico at Saturday's state convention. The governor said the party is evolutionary and new people with no particular allegiance to history or tradition are constantly coming into the organization.

Delegates to the state convention named Zora Hesse of Albuquerque as the national committeewoman to succeed Dessie Sawyer of Tatum, who was seeking re-election to the post she had held for 24 years. Apodaca said there was no contrived conspiracy to defeat Mrs. Sawyer, who he complimented for her many years of service to the party and the state. "There is a simple reason why she lost," he said. "Zora Hesse took her campaign to the delegates and won It." Named Deputy State Auditor SANTA FE (AP) Dan Marino, now district director of the state Bureau of Revenue, has been chosen deputy state auditor, announced State Auditor Max Sanchez.

However, Sanchez said he has not hired anyone to fill six vacant staff positions. "I can't hire anybody right now because we don't have the money," he said. "We don't have it because we spent it upgrading other staff salaries this year." Sanchez said he would have the money when the new fiscal year starts July 1. Marino will move into his new position Monday, replacing Tommy Romero, who quit two months ago to take the top financial post with the New Mexico Highway Dept.
