varsity basketball t.tm of St. Bona's college opened its basketball season yesterday with the Alumni at the Joseph Butler Memorial building, and like the reserve team, hung the first victory to thefr belts. The final score was 34-19. The varsity five opened a tornado of speed that bewildered their opjon- ents and managed to keep the ball the greater part of the game. At no time during the game was the varsity team in danger.

IKES I IT OTT Minis of Male Populalioo and 315 Dogs Active In Twenly- FOOP HOOP Cliase LITTLE VALLEY, Dec. that Randolph is a dangerous place for bandits, it must now also be conceded that Little Valley" is a dangerous place for bears. The adventurous wanderer who invaded the village Saturday afternoon and led three hundred and seventy-five dogs and two-thirds of the male population of the village, excluding the lame, the halt and the blind, or most of them, a twenty-four hour chase, now bears mute testimony to the fact i before a cloud of witnesses, in Will Newton's garage. He was a black, yearling boar, and he weighs just a hundred pounds. Dave Whipple saw him first, coming from Napoli- Then Mrs.

Andrew Case saw him entering the field where her grandchildren were play- ing in the snow. She got them to the house and the bear went on to the village. Otto Kahler saw him and called to the children ski-ing in the cemetery to run. The bear came across the cemetery. Mrs.

John Rickert saw him as he stopped and looked and then galloped off toward the fairground fence, the fair polico were gone, and disappeared. The town boiled out like a thumped beehive. It was only an hour before dark. One man got well on the trail with a shotgun before he discovered that he had no cartridges. Another man had a broken revolver.

The tracks showed that Will Carr's air- dale dog was so close in the pursuit, that his feet slid in the, snow in his effort to stop, when the bear turned and faced him- At last reports the airdale was missing. Nobody saw the bear again that night Sunday morning, Will Newton organized the pursuit. Mr. Newton has been practising on foxes and white rabbits for years. Last fall he brought a handsome buck home from the Adirondacks, and now he has the bear.

Mr. 'Newton, L. H. Frantz and Nathaniel Shaw picked up the tracks in the snow where the bear went north, crossed the valley and up the ridge along Toad Hollow, tried to get into Mr. Bonhoff's hen house and failed, crossed Reuben Newton's orchard, the road east'of Five Points and went north into the Otto Swamp.

He must have traveled most of the night, as he had not laid down until he got to Otto. Beaters drove him out of the swamp, and late Sunday afternoon, Mr. Newton, who was posted on a rise of ground, saw him coming up through hollow and shot him. His pelt, ornamented with head and claws, will make a rug- Bears are often killed in the lands of the proposed State Park, south of the Allegany river, fifteen miles from here, but Lafayette Mosher, former sheriff, says that it was 50 years ago that another bear came through here, this same way. Issue Will In All Probability Come Before Common Council; Bests Ih Mermen, Says Mayor The common council will meet in regular session in the council chamber, city building, tonight at 8 o'clock.

The main issue to come before the council will in all probability be action relative to the increase in the price of gas, announced by the Keystone Gas Co. The council has the power to instruct the mayor or city attorney to enter a complaint with the Public Service Commission, against the step taken by the company. Mayor Georgia stated today that the matter will rest entirely with the council. The Bobs took three straight from the L. M.
