A Warm Sunday Fair, not so cold tonight, Sunday partly cloudy, warmer. THE EVENING INDEPENDENT 101st 203 Established 1863 Associated Press and Central Press News and Features Saturday, February 29, 1964 Today's Chuckle Women are now at-a distinct disadvantage. Man has finally learned how to travel faster than sound. 16 Pages 7 Cents a Copy 42 Cents a Week S. Has New Super Jet THIS IS A BIG DAY FOR ALL LEAP YEAR BABIES Celebrating Their First Birthdays In Four Years A-3-C ANNE WACHTEL By BILL BALL Sherry Lynn Markowsky, the 39 inch, 40 pound, dark-haired, dark-eyed daughter of Mr.

and Mrs. Ronald Markowsky of 1122 Summerdale st NW celebrates her first birthday today. If you're thinking that at 39 inches and 40 pounds the winsome little miss is big for her age wrong. She's just about average for, you see, Sherry is one of more than 129,000 persons who are unfortunate, or fortunate depending on where you're standing, to have been born on the 29th of February in a Leap Year. BORN MONDAY, Feb.

29, 1960 at 6:06 p. m. in the Massillon city hospital, Sherry Lynn has had to wait this long for that momentous day, her birthday, to roll 5th birthday today around again. One woman pundit said that for Sherry Lynn; being born on Leap Year is the realization of the greatest boon to womankind since the invention of lipstick. As she gets older, the quipster pointed out, she'll be able to quarter her true chronological age and still be telling the truth.

This whole business concerning Leap Year comes about because the earth doesn't make an absolute revolution around the sun in exactly 365 days. The earth's orbit around the sun, called a Sidereal Year, takes 365 days, 6 hours, 9 minutes and 9.5 seconds of mean solar time. In an effort to take up the slack Julius Caesar added an extra day to February every 4 years, a correction that proved to be a little strong in light of the extra minutes and seconds accumulated in MRS. JAMES ROMESBERG Pope Greg. now a nurse in Akron ory decreed that there would be no leap year-in century years not divisible.by why the year 2000 will be a leap year but there was none in 1800 or 1900.

ANOTHER PROBLEM to be considered is, when your birthday falls on Feb. 29 do you celebrate in non-Leap Year years on Feb. 28 or on March 1. English parliament during the reign of King Henry VII authorized Feb. 28 as the legal birthday of all persons born on Feb.

State police held 2 teenage boys today in the slaying of a high school senior and began a search for the body of the father of one of them. Richard McAlister, 18, of Norwalk and Edward McNally, 17, of Wilton were charged Friday with first-degree murder. STATE POLICE Commissioner Leo J.

Mulcahy said the youths admitted killing John R. Shinners, 18, of Wilton Sunday and Edwin McAlister, Richard's father, last Aug. 29. Mulcahy said the youths buried the father's body in an undisclosed wooded area. Young McAlister "hated his father with a fixation" and blamed him tor the death of his mother, said Lt.

Louis Marchese, commander of state police in this section of Connecticut. Marchese said McNally and McAlister ambushed McAlister's father at his home, McNally shooting him and young McAlister stabbing him. Existence Revealed By Johnson Superior To Any Other In World By The Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) President Johnson revealed the existence of a new U. S.

super jet fighter plane ''that far exceeds the per- 'ormance of any other in use in the world to day." The president, in his first televised news conference, said the new long range intercepter was jeing revealed at this time so that its flight testing and final phases of development could proceed in orderly fashion. HE SAID the program was set up in secret in 1959, with Lockheed Aircraft in charge of the program. The engine was built by Pratt and Whitney, he said, while Hughes Aircraft developed the fire, control and missile sys tern. Johnson gave no details of the aircraft's performance, except to say that it flies at speeds in excess of 2,000 miles an hour and performs at altitudes of up to 70,000 feet. One key to the development of this plane, which flies at times at 3 times the speed of sound, is a new process of fabrication with titanium metal which successfully resists the extremely high temperatures resulting from supersonic flight, Johnson said.

The problems solved in developing this jet fighter, said, will assist in development of the supersonic air liner. President Johnson also revealed extraordinary measures were taken to protect his life in Florida this week because there were "reasons to take additional precautions." JOHNSON DID NOT confirm reports that the measures were taken because of a tip that a Cuban suicide pilot might try to ram the presidential transport plane, but told his news conference that Secret Service suggestions were followed. He said he had asked that the situation be handled by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and (See 16) Col. Glenn Must Remain In Hospital COLUMBUS (AP) Lt. Col.

This is the day when one postmaster steps down and another takes over. At the end of business tonight, James E. Snee will officially retire after 15 years of service, handing over his duties to Willard Geis. Geis, former Democratic city chairman and president of city council, was appointed acting postmaster this week after endorsement by city and county Democratic committees. He will serve until a civil service examination is held to determine a permanent successor.

THE CHANGEOVER is a big job. Both Snee and Geis must meet with R. F. Jacubec, district inspector from Akron, this afternoon to start the process. Jacubec will make a complete inventory of stamps, stocks, equipment and cash on hand before approving Snee's departure and Geis' take-over.
