The monthly report of the Department of Agriculture for August and September presents interesting statements in relation to the condition of farm crops in this country. In New England the prospective return of corn is better this year than it has been during the last five years.

The averages are far above usual in Maine, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. In all these States fully fifteen per cent, more corn will be gathered this fall than last, and the quality is excellent in all respects. The same facts are reported from New York. The crops in the heavy corn producing counties of Livingston, Onan-dago, Ontario, Wayne, Dutchess and Suffolk will be much beyond that of 1871. In those counties of New Jersey which yield fully half the corn supply of that State, the condition of the crop is fine, and the return per acre will be entirely satisfactory.

In some parts of the State the per cent, of yield will be light. On the whole, however, the crop of this year will be a marked one from its fiaJtSss. In Pennsylvania, such counties as LancasterYork, Washington, Bucks, Berks, Westmoreland, Cumberland, Centre, Montgomery and Chester, none of which produce less than a million bushel3, and some of them nearly three millions, report a high average. Delaware, Maryland and Virginia are the only States between Maine and Georgia which report the corn prospect unfavorable. The average for Delaware is fifty-seven, for Maryland, eighty-six, and Virginia, ninety -five.

The reports from Virginia are variable, some "better than for years," as in Bath, while others give expectation of but half a crop. Accomac, which usually produces half a million bushels, returns condition at one hundred and ten, while Fauquier, which stands second in corn production, makes its record ninety. In Ohio, of forty-three counties reporting, only two are below average, seven average, and thirty-four above. Of sixteen counties which produced twenty -three millions of bushels in 1869, Franklin and Warren report one hundred dermines a boy's character lor honesty very and plenty of fruit of all kinds. "Faith, sir," said Pat, "sure and when the craythur is cleaned, just be afther hanging it against the door where ivery mither's son of thim will see it; and early in the morning, before any one is about, get up and take in your pig, and hide it away. Agassiz in his report of investigations in South America, states that glacial phenomena are as frequent and observable in the countries over which he has traveled as in his native Switzerland. The whole country he declares has been covered with a thick, icy crust, which, moving about, has worn and scarred the rocks in a wonderful manner. In one instance he found volcanic eruptions subjected to glacial action. The following is an extract from his report I have not noticed anything to confirm the idea that the glacial of the northern hemisphere have alternated those of the southern hemisphere in their greatest extension, as is assumed by those who cannot with the precision of the equinoxes the difference of temperature required for the change. The abrasion of the rocks seems to me neither more nor less fresh in one hemisphere than in the other, nor do the veins of molten rocks rising above the surrounding disintegrated rocks stand out in more or less bold relief in either case.

"However astronomical causes may have been connected with the climatic conditions of tbe world, I see no reason for believing, from any facts I have observed, that alternations of temperature iu the northern and southern hemispheres have ever been the primary and efficient cause of glacial phenomena. The more I consider these phenomena the more am I satisfied that ice has been the great paring machine by which rocky surfaces have been fashioned. The great geological agents are not alone fire and water, as is universally admitted. Ice has had a great share in the work and I believe this will also sooner or later be recognized with equal unanimity. After having traced what seems to me palpable evidence of an ice mantle overspreading once the southern part of this continent, the effect of which I have seen from Montevidio, on the Atlantic, to Tal-chuano on the Pacific coast, the question naturally arises how far the Southern extremity of Africa, as well as New Zealand and Australia were involved in the extension.

I hope I may live to see younger naturalists investigate these regions with the same object. I believe that whenever such an investigation is undertaken by a competent observer, it will be found that over and above all local glacial phenomena, and side by side with them, there is also evidence of a southern. circumpolar glacial agency. dering on the busquehanna river, and about midway between Duncannon and Marys-yille.
