A second bond issue for $2.5 million will provide Montana's share of costs connected with installation and operation of a plant to treat polluted water draining from the site of a closed gold mine near Anaconda. Jan Sensibaugh, director for the Department of Environmental Quality, said the $6.3 million reclamation bond posted by the former operator of the Beal Mountain mine, Pegasus Gold, was enough to cover the expected cleanup work. But, she said, that was before officials learned water escaping from a leach pad was so contaminated it was killing vegetation. The state concluded it could not get additional money from the bankrupt Pegasus OBITUARIES MISSOULA Clara Burklund, 84, of Missoula, passed away Sunday, April 28, 2002, of heart failure at her son's home in Tucson, Ariz.

to deal with the problem, she said. Sensibaugh said the U.S. Forest Service has agreed to spend $2 million on the treatment project. The state supplemented that with $750,000 it made on selling gold recovered during the initial reclamation, and $500,000 from interest earned on the Pegasus reclamation bond. The bond sale approved Thursday will provide the balance needed to install and run the plant, and to add a more expensive cap to the leach pad that will stem the flow of water into the container over the next two years, Sensibaugh said.

Eventually, the water treatment will have to be done only periodically as water in the leach pad slowly accumulates, state officials have said. "We're dealing with it, but it's going to be a lot more expensive than we thought it would be," Sensibaugh told the board. Paying off the 20-year bonds will cost almost $1.8 million in interest.
