T. ,0 WRECK AND RUIN DISASTER NEAR ARDHORE earLy this MORNirsa. Three Persons Injured In the Wreck and Property to the Amount of $15,000 is Destroyed. There are wrecks and wrecks, but Ardmore has to-day gazed in horror and amazement on one of the worst ever witnessed where no colision occurred. The scene beggars description and will not soon be effaced from the minds of those who visited it to-dav.

It is a second Inferno, with dumb brutes as the torment ed sufferers. The wreck occurred about two miles north of town about 3 o'clock this morning and is supposed to ibavp bcf-n caused bv the rail spreadiug under the weight ot a 1 big eight-wheel locomotive. Eugine- No. 'J24 in charge of Engineer Varner, pulling a mixed train of about twenty-five cars in charsre of Conductor Harris, left Ardmore at 3 o'clock, going north. While at the depot here it was boarded by several boys and young men who stowed themselves away for a ride to Davis in hope of witnessing a lynching which had been currently reported would take place there last night or this morning.

Engine No. .924 is a big eight-wheeler and seems to be regarded by trainmen as entirely too heavy tor this track. When two miles out, and at a poiut where a stone culvert bridges a small stream, the rails spread and the cars piled upon 1 other in a shapeless mass of wreck and ruin. The cars are lying diagonally across the track, which is torn up for ii considerable distance. At the point of the wreck a deep cut opens, flanked on either side by a deep branch or gully, rendering the building of a switch around the nlacfi almost an impossibility.

As a result no trains can pass until the track is cleared. Twelve cars and the tender of the en cine are piled together. The first car of the train was an emi grant car containing household coods. horses, chickens, etc. The other eleven were stock cars loaded with cattle from Southern Texas.

News of the disaster was quickly sent up and down the line and by 7 o'clock this morning a wreck train and crew from Gainesville were on the scene and the work of clearing the track begun. It will probably take all of to-day and a good part of the night to get the track in shape for trains to pass. A fortunate thing about the wreck, and a fact that seems almost miraculous, was that not a member of either the train or stock crews was injured though several had very narrow escapes. The Ardmore boys were not so fortunate. Chas.

btewart was taken from the wreck and carried to his home in a precarious condi tion. his spine being injured, his hip crushed and his left arm broken. The report was current that he had died of his injuries, but this was erroneous as he was considerably improved at noon and talked intelligently of the accident. A young man named Clark was badly injured in the left shoulder, but not seriously hurt otherwise. W.

A. Barker sustained severe bruises on the head, face and chest, but escaped any serious injury. It was reported that Jake Lewis, Clyde Nichols and Dud Slaughter were also injured, but this proved to be a mistake as these young gentlemen were on our streets today as hale and hearty as usual. A boy named Coffee, who was thought also to be on the train, had not been found up to noon 4 Springtime outside should be reflected inside our homes. But the stock in the wreck cer tainly present a pitiable spectacle. On all sides the maimed and bruised bodies are lying in heaps, the dead and living being dumped together indiscriminately as they are taken from the wreck.

No effort was being made to put them out of their misery, bnt they were dragged out bleeding and mangled and left to drag out the remainder of their short lives in suffering and torment. Those that were uninjured, and they were comparatively few, were rescued and driven to the pens at the oil mill where they will be caied for along with those that were in the remaining cars of the train which were not wrecked. Superintendent L. J. Polk visi ted the scene to day ana pro nounced the wreck the worst he had ever seen.

Ho estimates the oss at NOTES Early this morning the telegraph line was tapped at the place of the wreck and an operator was kept at work during the day, sending nformation and receiving orders. George Allmau, a brakeman.was sitting on the trout end ot the fifth car when the accident happened and was carried into tne center of the wreck and ruin with-lnn out being injured. 1 Elmer Vaughn of Edna, was in the emigrant car with the household goods and horses en-route to Purcell. This car was the worst wrecked of any, but the young man. who was asleep at the time, was not disturbed iu his slumbers and knew nothing of what had happened until awakened afterward bv the traiumen.

He was uninjured, though four horses and several mules in the car were killed. Crowds lined both sides of the track for or 2K yards all the morning and it. is estimated that 3000 people viewed the wreck during the day. We handle the best and the poorest. Jake.

Marcum we had been informed that A. J. Wolverton was a gold democrat, but have since learned from unimpeachable sources that such is not the fact.

He is for Bryan; in sympathy with the Chi cago platform; in favor of free and unlimited coinage of tilver at the ratio ot lb to 1, and was one of Gov. Hogg's most ardent sup porters in his race against Clark, the sound money candidate. His record as a private citizen has al ways been that of a pure, warm hearted Christian gentleman, anil we hope to see our club elect dele gates favorable to his caudidacv to morrow." The Akdmoreite joins others in wishing theia a long and happy life of contentment and prosperity Mr. Simmons, who lives a ghor distance west of town, informs the Akdmoreite that the bridge which had been destroyed across Hickory creek near his' place was again in good shape and travel had been THE nURDEKERS CAUQHT. The Negroes Who Killed Marsnai Myers at Davis is Custody. We learn by 'phone to day from Davis that two negroes have been captured, charged with the killing of Marshal Myers at that place Saturday night. Lyman McIIarley was captured yesterday on the Washita and lodged iu the calaboose at Davis.

Pink Bruner, another captured three miles from Henne pin, where he had stopped to have his leg dressed, he having been wounded by Myers. He was also placed in the calaboose at Davis. Bruner says that McIIarley is the cause of the trouble, he having planned for some time to kill Myers. There was some talk of lynching, but better counsel prevailed and the prisoners were turned over to the United States authorities, who took them to Pauls Valley or Purcell to-day for safe keeping. The funeral of the dead oflieer took place yesterday afternoon under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity, of which, he was a member.

A very large crowd attended the lui eral. DISTRICT COURT. Still Working on Criminal Docket. Today's Business. In the district court today work the criminal docket was ic- unied and a number of minor cases were disposed ot.

uurmg the morning session a number of answers, motions and filed iu civil cases. In the case of Jack Holloway, et charged with robbery, a mo tion to release defeudauts was overruled bv the court. Iu the case of W. L. Hall vs.

Nethy Hall, an action for divorce, a decree was granted. J. R. McCnistau vs. Jesse E.

MeCuistau was another suit for divorce iu which a decree was granted. In the case of Ole liobo, lar ceny, a continuance was grautcd ou motion of defendant. The case against John Galligher, on a charge of adultery, was dis missed. In the case of Pearl Witt, charg ed with adultery, a dismissal was entered. A continuance was taken iu the case ot llarve llenmger, et larceny.

John Holly entered a plea of guilty to the charge of cutting timber aud was fined $10, with costs remitted. Iu the case of John Wadsworth, charged in two indictments with assault to kill, a dismissal was entered. The case against Brit Love for larceny was dismissed. The case of Betty Wright, charged with murder, was contin ued on motion of the defendant. Jack Smart, charged with lar ceny, was placed on trial and the jury returned a verdict ot not guilty.

Wolverton for national commiteeman. Dr. Wolverton is very much elated over his prospects in the nations on the east side aud he will grow in favor there as he becomes better acquainted. He is a man whom the people like aud in whom they place confidence as soon as they come to know him. Now that "Jake's Best" has proved to be the best by two of the best judges in town, give us a trial order for a sack.

Ute Hill is here from Pad-ncah. A light rain fell yesterday after noon. DOVttHERTY. Some forty or fifty of our people went to Davis yesterday to attend the funeral of Hugh Myers. Twenty-five or thirty ment up to Davis last night on a freight train to assist in the lynching of the negroes.

But the crowd was dissanointed for when they arrived at Davis they found the town quiet and all the citizens at home sleep ing. The crowd at Davis had grown tired of waitiug for the Dougherty crowd and had given up their intention. The Davis people should send their bad negroes to this place, Negroes are not allowed to live in the corporate limits of Dougherty and uoue are allowed in town except ou busiuess and not for any cause are they allowed here after night. r.KKWYX. The south bound passenger is here ou a siding waiting for the track to be cleared.

Judge Bradford and Deputies Stewart, Puiliam and Sam Harper with other court officials left here about 11 clock this morning on a special to the scene of the wreck and will walk on to Ardmore. A large crowd is here today. Frank Fox and wife went to Ardmore today. John Attaway and Edgar Shrum ate at Ardmore attending court. Robt.

Haney was here yesterday from Berwyn visiting friends. Robt. Scivally is attending conrt at Ardmore. The Springer aud Glenn singing choirs met here yesterday and were welcomed with quite a large crowd. DL'RWOOD.

John O'Mealy came iu from Hillsboro Saturday night to make another of his "go-it-aione" runs, to a ranch near the Arbuckle mountains. He made the trip out there and back all right enough, but the wreck up the road prevented the passenger train coming iu this morning aud the boys caught John easy. II. Jordan returned today from a visit with friends in Gainesville. Merrill W. Johnson came down from Pauls Valley this moruing to atteud court. Dr.

J. ATolverton will go to Pauls Valley on the first train that goes north from Ardmore. Miss Irene Hall of Batesville, is in the city, the guest of her uncle W. H. Bumpass.

Dr. Field and son, Robert M. Field, are in the city from Gainesville, the guests of Mr. aud Mrs. W.

O. Farthing. Judge S. B. Bradford came back from Davis this mornine on a special train as far a3 the wreck.

From there all passengers had to walk to town. Mrs. H. H. Pcnuington is ported quite seriously ill today.

re- C. W. Hotchkiss and family of Bowie, have arrived in Ardmore and will make this their future home. Mr. Hotchkiss will embark in the jewlery business here shortly.

Mrs. Hotchkiss is a sister of Mrs. C. II. Troutman.
