NORTHERN IOWA led off the i Comstock next will enter the Hawaiian Open University scoreless as the Bi-son posted a 34-0 football victory in the North" Central Conference Saturday. The win gives North Dakota State a 5-0 conference record and assures the Bison of at least a share of the title. Only the University of Northern Iowa has a chance of catching the Bison. THE BISON, which had led all seven of the conference statistics division for offense and defense for several weeks, turned in another outstanding performance. Senior halfback Ken Rota and sophomore halfback Tim Mjoi combined for 247 of NDS's 318 rushing yards.

Rota picked up two touchdowns and Mjos one, giving each 11 for the season. Both Rota's touchdowns cam on runs in the first quarter. Orell Schmitz added a third in Rickey became a dominating power in the National League, he had served a comparatively brief apprenticeship in the American league. He learned something then that he never forgot for the rest of his life. The first time he mentioned it was when the Nationals were at low ebb, an inferior league that was constantly being slaughtered in the World Series by the Yankees.

"Ban Johnson was the driving force behind the American League," boomed the Mahatma. "He founded it and was its first president. An even more lasting contribution was the sense of pride he instilled in everyone connected with the league. AL Pride "If one of his teams beat a National League team in a meaningless exhibition game, a telegram still would arrive the next day, 'Congratulations on winning for the great American League. When I switched to the there.

It smashed into your consciousness as if in capital letters or italics. It was never only the American League. It was the great American eLague. When I switched to the Nationals, that same sense of pride was missing. It never had been implanted the way Ban hammered it into the other league." Operating from strength in the old dayj, the Americans had such imaginative foresight that they once made ready to make the first franchise shift in baseball history.

The moribund St. Louis Browns would be transferred to Los Angeles. Everything was set and the deal would be consummated the next day. But the next day was Dec. 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor Day.

So there was no franchise shift. By 1958 the Nationals were gaining all the momentum. If they lacked pride, they had arro scoring in the game with a 24- this week T. Corns toe vard field goal by William Comstock's brother Byron also is in the spot light. Byron hopes to be making the Latin American fw.r?? circuit, tne iirst tourney bo De neia at Caracas, Kovacevich in the first quarter.

In the third quarter, South Dakota State notched a touchdown on a one-yard plunge by conference-leading rusher Darwin Gonnerman. Also in the Venezuela, Nov. 16-19. The tourney then moves to Puerto Rico and Bahamas. Miami, Ohio Byron, who this past summer had an assistant's Ohio State at Michlaan State Northwestern at Michigan Iowa State at Nebraska third quarter Gonnerman kicked position at Chevy Chase, Club, recently West Texas State at Northern Illinois a 21-yard field goal with 21 sec won the Middle Atlantic Open for assistant pros, League, condemned this unilateral action as disorderly which it is.

But greed has been known to warp vision in the past and human nature never changes. The Americans merely followed the other league's principles: Take what you can get when you can get it before the other fellow beats you to it. Strung Along When Finley, a carpetbagger, elected to vacate Kansas City for Oakland riches, his lodge brothers had to string along with him or risk lawsuits. Besides, they had been stuck for years with a single franchise on the West Coast, an economic burden. They have' long needed another to cut the cost factor almost in half.

They wanted Oakland. They got it. And they also have ripe Seattle for the future. This was a coup of first magnitude if you were an American Leaguer. But if you were a National Leaguer, it would have elements of selfishness, intemperate haste and disregard for the Establishment and also dirty pool.

When the Nationals did the equivalent, however, it was a perfectly peachy operation that they regarded as outsmarting the opposition. Money Hungry No longer is there any pretense that baseball is a sport belonging on the same idealistic levels as motherhaod and the American flag. By their actions the magnates expose themselves as capitalists in search of the almighty dollar. They cold-bloodedly ditched Kansas City because Finley never gave the town a chance to prove it was big league. Fortunately for the Missouri metropolis, however, Sen.

Stuart Symington raised such a chilling howl that the American League had swift second thoughts on promising K.C. an expansion franchise for 1971. The date was advanced to 1969, pairing it with Seattle if a stadium bond issue a few months hence is approved. Gets Chance Even an expansion team without Finley is to be preferred to a nonexpansion team with Finley. So Kansas City will get a chance to prove that it belongs.

This new juggle puts the Nationals on the hip because it also will have to expand to 12 teams. The shuffle will toss all minor leagues into drastic new alignments, perhaps even killing a few. But baseball has been eating its young for so long that extra cannibalism will faze it not a whit. The source of talent supply keeps shrinking and no one seems to care. "Baseball has to be the greatest of all sports," an old-time cynic once remarked.

"Otherwise it never could survive the men who run it." taking first-place money of $700. State Leaders onds remaining.
