Sunday, November 13, 1983 tfia Rapid City Journal 91 Rozier-led Cornhuskers smash Kansas, continue to roll in Big Eight LINCOLN. Neb. (AP) - I-back Mike Rozier and the top-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers did It all Saturday demolishing Kansai 67-13 to lock up at least share of the Big Eight title and set themselves up for a third straight trip to the Orange Bowl. Rozier scored four consecutive first-half touchdowns, the fourth time this season he has scored four TDs In a game. He ran for 2S5 yards and rolled up some more records as Nebraska rolled over the Jayhawks in a per-formance that set an NCAA team scoring record for one season. Although bowl invitations can't officially be extended for days, Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne didn't hesitate to state the obvious. "It appears as though the Orange Bowl has got things set up to where we are in right now," said Osborne. He referred to the bowl committee's decision to Invite the team with the best overall record to Miami, apparently assuring a Nebraska appearance. Osborne said the win over Kansas was "probably our best overall game of the year." , Kansas Coach Mike Gottfried said the Jayhawks' game plan was hurt when receiver Bobby Johnson was Injured. .. "We wanted to go some to a four-receiver offense but that took it out of us." ' Johnson set a Big Eight mark for receiving yards In a season. His two catches for 22 yards gave him 979, surpassing the 980 collected by Oklahoma's Eddie Hinton In 1978. It was the final home appearance for 19 Nebraska seniors, including quarterback Turner Gill, who never quarter-backed a losing effort in Memorial Stadium. ;: The 11-0 Cornhuskers wasted no time in setting the pace as Rozier scored on runs of 49 and 11 yards In the first period. , He tallied on runs of 3 and 17 yards in the second period. His rushing yards gave him 1,943 for the season, setting a school game and season record, and a Big Eight season mark that passed the 1.877 gained in 1982 by Ernest Anderson of Oklahoma State. His single game record topped the school record of 255 yards gained by Rick Berns against Missouri in 1978. ; Nebraska set an NCAA team scoring record for the season. Smith scored on a 63-yard punt return In the third stanza. : Kansas quarterback Frank Seurer hit Richard Estell with a 62-yard scoring pass for the 3-6-1 Jayhawks' first touchdown. With 20 seconds remaining, substitute quarterback Mike Orth passed 5 yards to Sandy McGee for KU's other score. Third-string quarterback Craig Sund-berg scored from the 9 In the fourth period for Nebraska. Guy Rozier, Mike's brother, blocked a Jayhawk punt and Dan Casterline grabbed It to score from the 21. Paul Miles added a 78-yard TD gallop for NU. . Seurer hit 14 of 36 passes for 249 yards. He was intercepted once in the first period and twice in the second stanza. . . The win clinches at least a share of the Big Eight title for Nebraska and gives the Huskers a chance to earn a third straight outright conference crown. Rozier came within seven yards of equaling , the Big Eight career rushing record of 4,582 set by Terry Miller of Oklahoma State In four seasons from 1974-77. Rozier has played only three years at Nebraska. The Huskers rolled up 680 yards total offense, including 567 yards rushing, while Seurer and company picked up 320 yards In the air and 132 on the ground. Colorado stubborn NORMAN, Okla. (AP) - Earl Johnson j set a school record for freshmen with 258 yards rushing and a pair of crosscountry touchdowns and Oklahoma held off late-charging Colorado, 41-28. The Sooners built a 34-7 halftime lead and led 41-14 after three quarters, but surrendered two . fourth-quarter touchdowns and barely avoided allowing a third that would have pulled the Buffaloes within striking distance. Oklahoma Improved to 7-3 overall and 5-1 In the conference. Colorado fell to 3-7 and 1-5. Johnson scored on runs of 57 and 58 yards and finished with 258 yards on 28 carries, eclipsing the mark of 239 yards set by Marcus Dupree in last year's Fiesta Bowl. His first run came just 1:46 into the game and started the Sooners on a first-halt spree in which they scored on six of their eight possessions and took a 34-0 lead. ! .' ' .i Colorado got a touchdown pass from Steve Vogel to Loy Alexander with 24 seconds left In the first half, and Chris McLemore scored on a 2-yard run in the third quarter to make it 34-14. But Johnson, a redshirt freshman from Dallas, blasted off right tackle for a 58-yard scoring jaunt near the end of the third period to push the lead to 41-14. The Buffs got another scoring pass from Vogel and touchdown run from McLemore in the final period, and threatened to pull to within a touchdown in the final minutes. But McLemore was stopped by Oklahoma linebacker Thomas Benson at the Sooners' 1-yard line on fourth down, killing the drive. Johnson played most of the day since Spencer Tillman, the Sooners' leading rusher until Saturday, was sidelined with a sprained neck. Derek Marshall, the sophomore quarterback who led the Buffs to a 34-23 victory over Kansas a week ago, left the game with a rib injury in the first quarter and did not return. Missouri squeezes by COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - Missouri quarterback Marlon Adler hit flanker George Shorthose with two touchdown passes and Brad Burditt added a field goal as the Tigers slipped past Oklahoma State 16-10 In a cold, damp game. Playing In intermittent snow and with scouts from five post-season , bowl games watching, Adler capped a drive late In the first half with a 41-yard scoring strike to Shorthose to give Missouri a 13-10 halftime lead. Oklahoma State's Harry Roberts ran back the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown and Larry Roach kicked a 25-yard field goal with 12:40 left in the first half to give the Cowboys a 10-0 '. lead. . . - , After Roach's field goal, Missourt drove to the Cowboy 23 and Adler found Shorthose wide open for a touchdown pass. Burditt's conversion attempt was blocked. Burditt closed out the scoring with a 23-yard field goal midway through the third quarter to cap a 43-yard Missouri drive. (AP) - David Ar-cher scored two touchdowns, passed for two more and set a Big Eight total offense record as he led Iowa State to a 49-27 come-from-behind victory over Kansas State. Archer's I-yard plunge and two-point conversion pass to Tracy Henderson brought the Cyclones to within seven points of the Wildcats, 27-20, with 6:50 left In the third period. He rifled an 11-yard scoring pass and another two-point conversion to Henderson three minutes into the fourth period, then scrambled 16 yards to the 1-yard line moments later follow-ing a KSU turnover to set up a Jason Jacobs touchdown that put the Cyclones on top, 35-27, with 9:25 left. Archer, who had a twisting, turning 16-yard touchdown run in the first period, added a 7-yard scoring toss to Henderson late in the fourth quarter and finished with 29 completions in 40 attempts for 286 yards. His 304 yards of total offense gave him 2,507 yards for the season, besting the conference mark of 2,387 set by Iowa State quarterback George Amundson in 1972. Henderson, a sophomore who ranks among the nation's top receivers this year, set a conference single-game record with 16 receptions and shattered the Big Eight season mark for reception yards. Henderson has 1,074 yards in receptions compared to 967 yards set by Oklahoma's Eddie Hinton in 1968. Nebraska-Omaha wins NCC volleyball title FARGO, N.D. (AP) - Nebraska-Omaha downed North Dakota State 15-12, 15-7 Saturday to capture the North Central Conference women's volleyball championship. " The vlcto-y automatically qualified Nebraska-Omaha for the NCAA Divi sion II tournament Dec. 2-3. The site for the national tourney has not been determined.
