Rummage Hy John Elvin 40 Percent Timber Wasted The local highways lined with seemingly endless stretches of pine remind us of our number one resource here in South Arkansas: Timber. It appears that we make good use of this resource. But appearances can be deceiving. Looking at an area that has just been cut over, difficult to see that as much as forty percent of the timber has been left on the land. Where is this forty percent? in tops, stumps Roots? Sixteen percent of the tree is root and stump.

And researchers at the Southern Forest Experiment Station in New Orleans have found that generally wood in southern pine stumps and roots did not differ greatly in chemical properties from that of the main Researchers are also working with other waste materials to determine their utility. They list bark as making up twelve percent of the tree, top of the stem as five percent, needles as four percent and about three percent in branches. At present, these wastes are apparently not useful as a timber resource. But that was also the case with wood chips and other wastes of the milling process until recently. The illustration below shows percentages of tops, bark, stump and root which often go to waste after cutting.

Whether pulling stumps and roots would have a detrimental effect on the land being cut over was not discussed by researchers investigating waste materials.
