They caused damages estimated at approximately half a million dollars. The tour was made of several burned barns, tv.'o schools, a food market and a partially built $75.000 home that burned Saturday night. Pauling says he could not get a passport for three years, and when he went to Sweden last year to pick up his Nobel prize he had to sign at least a dozen non-Communist affidavits. NEW YORK '.fl — The American i Jewish Congress says it finds | "widespread" job discrimination: between Jews and believes the situation might be even worse if the nation were not prosperous and enjoying full employment. . The AJC made its report Sunday on the basis of a nationwide survey i conducted for the World Jewish Congress. It staled there is "snlficient evidence of discrimination against Jews to prevent undue optimism | concerning prompt elimination of that evil." Since "discrimination against Jews Is more subtle than discrimination against other groups, we must be alert to find fresh, imagi- native approaches to the task of breaking down long-established patterns of employment that limit the economic opportunities of many Americans," the report said. There is less discrimination in states with fair employment laws, it said, but these laws "do not by themselves halt discrimination." The AJC said its survey showed that "Jews are largely excluded from many basic industries, such as commercial hanking, automobile manufacturing, shipping and transportation, agriculture and mining." "They tend, as a result, to be concentrated in speculative industries, retail trade and the professions." the report continued.
