The first quake, measuring 3.5 magnitude on the Richter scale, occurred at 12:59 p.m. MDT. It was followed at 1:08 p.m. by a stronger jolt measuring 4.3 magnitude, said the U.S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo.

The third quake, the strongest at 5.6, occurred at 2:03 p.m. The third quake was measured as 5.4 magnitude by the University of Utah Seismograph Stations. Dr. Robert Smith of the of said the slight variance in readings was due to technical differences between Richter scale monitors used by the university and USGS. He said it was likely the true reading for the biggest of the shakers was closer to 5.6, which he described as "moderate," than the of U's 5.4.

Smith said the school's monitors agreed with the 3.5 and 4.3 magnitudes the USGS had for the first and second quakes. The quakes, centered 34 miles south of Price and 14 miles east of Ferrin, were reported felt in communities throughout central Utah, including not only I Price but Manti, Ephraim, Delta and Roosevelt. There were also reports the quake was felt across western Colorado, in communities such as Grand Junction, Meeker, Hotchkiss and Craig. It was felt as far west as Salt Lake County and as far east as Golden, authorities said. The U.S.

Forest Service said a quake-triggered rockslide forced closure of the Huntington Canyon Road near Price, which is about 120 miles south of Salt Lake City. The USGS warned that small aftershocks in the central Utah region could occur over the next few days to few weeks.
