Johnson earned first team all-conference honors as a freshman, when her team went 19-8 and 10-2 in the league. "I made some contacts with junior college coaches, and I saw a tape of Becky that she sent to me," said Scott.

"She is a left-side hitter, which is the position that wc needed to fill." UM women second in MSU rodeo BOZEMAN The Western Montana men and the Montana State women claimed team titles Saturday night during the second session of the 1994 MSU Spring Rodeo. Western Montana finished with 360 points, followed by Dawson Community College with 305 and Northwest Community College of Wyoming with 250. In the women's team race, Montana State had 200 points, Montana 170 and Western Montana 145. The men's all-around title went to Jason Jackson of Montana State, white MSU's Brenda Tibbetts won the women's all-around. Bozeman keeps college rodeo BOZEMAN The College National Finals Rodeo, which has been held here 24 of the last 25 years, will remain here under a contract to host the event from 1995-1997.

The 1994 rodeo, set for June 14-19, had been the last scheduled in Bozeman under a three-year agreement. Albuquerque, N.M., and Oklahoma City, were the other finalists to host college rodeo's season-ending event. But rodeo officials pointed to Montana's support for the rodeo as one of the main reasons it will stay in Bozeman. The Brick Breeden Fieldhouse at Montana State is regularly sold out for the week-long event, with last year's attendance approaching 30,000. The 16-game slate stretches from September to the first week of November. UM will start out at home in tournaments against the likes of Nebraska and Arizona, both first-year programs. Duerksen wants one more home game in early October. If that doesn't come through, the Lady Griz make their last Missoula appearance Sept. 18.

Then they'll visit such nationally respected teams as Colorado College, Washington and Washington State. "As a new program, all the big games you get, you've got to go to them," Duerksen said. Construction on a three-field soccer and rugby complex near Dornblaser Field starts this spring. It should be ready by the 1995 season.

Duerksen wasn't sure what she was getting into at UM in terms of recruiting and local support. Both have been positive. "It turns out the school is pretty easy to sell," she said. UM is offering the equivalent of six full scholarships, which will be spread over twice as many players.

Athletic director Bill Moos said by 1997 the school plans to have the NCAA maximum of 11 full rides. Three of Duerksen's players at Seattle University will transfer to UM. One, center midfielder Shera-lyn Stackhouse, was an NAIA All-American. "She's an athlete first, but she's a beautiful soccer player," Duerksen said. "She's fun to watch." Stackhouse, however, may red-shirt in '94 "just to save her," Duerksen said.

Most of the other recruits also come from the Seattle area. Five play on the club team BC Stars, which recently won the Washington state championship and will play at nationals in June. Duerksen is holding twice-weekly tryouts for students who want to walk on this fall. "So we really feel welcomed. (And) for a small city, there's definitely a big soccer community here." It's been worth a few sleepless nights. "I'm enjoying it," Duerksen said. "I guess I like the excitement, and I like the scariness of it. That's sort of the fun of it too, because it's your own project." 130 W.
