E. GaulU Milwaukee. COUNTING THE VOTE. Tha laws Offieer Mew aad DUeovea IrregalaritiosClaavar Will Coo last taa Bieetloa. The town offleera met 8aturday aad began the canvass of the returns ot the recent election.

In tbe South Town there was a good deal ot interest manifested, owing to the peculiar clroumstanees attending the defeat ot Cleaver, the Democratic candidate tor Assessor. The returns showed the following result: First Ward Drake. 1.2b3: Cleaver. 1. 064.

Second Ward Drake, 1.364; Cleaver. Vttd. Third Ward Drake. 1.37s; Cleaver. 783.

Fonrth Ward Drake. 2.064; Cleaver. 1.178. Flfih Ward Drake. 662; Cleaver.

2.377. Drake's majorities foot uu 2.034; Cleaver. 1.015. Drake's total majority over Cleaver. 219.

Mr. Cleaver, through his attorney, gave uotioe tnat ha would contest the election, and that probably an order of court would ba applied for to hava a recount, to extend if possible to tbe eity boxes. It waa hi ouioion that many town voles had been deposited in the city boxes. Tbe North Town Canvassing Board found a tew discrepancies betweau the returns and the tally sheet, but they went In most instances trivial. For the Seventh Precinct of tha Eighteenth Ward no tally sheet lor the town ticket was sent in.

but instead of it the tally sheet for the eitv ticket was sent. Prob ably the tally sheet for the towa will bo found in the city box tor tbat precinct. The canvassers therefore took tbe vote Irom the poll list. Tba defeated candidate for Supervisor and Collector will contest tbe election on the ground that tbe names for those offices were transposed and judges counted the vote oast aa though they had been east regularly aod for the men who were running for tbeaa office respectively. la the West Town several Irregularities weie discovered.

Ia th Second District ot the Sixth Ward it waa found that a ballot-box had been smashed in. and one ot the judgea had attested his own oath. In the Third District ot this ward and the Fifth District of the beventb tbe ballots were not sealed. In the Eighth District of tba Seventh ard no poll-book was found in the box. but it was alter- warn nanoea in.

aau mere were then found to be more ballots east for that precinct thaa appeared on the book. In ouite a number ot districts tbe returns had not been mad out properly. In some instances not sworn to. and in other improperly. Illegally, and insufficiently signed.

The judges In several precincts in the Sixth Ward and those ot the First, Second, aud Sixth of the Eleventh; tbe Third la the Twelfth, tbe First of the Thirteenth, and the First of tha Fourteenth bava beau uotilied to attend the moeung of the board early this morning. THE MEYER-GELDERMAN CASE. Mra. Ida Geldermao, now In jail on tha Coroner's verdict without bail nn the charge ot being an accessory with Dr. Meyer in poisoning her husband, filed a petition for a habeas corpus in the Circuit Court yesterday. Incorporated ia tbe petition la tbe printed ra- Krt ot the Coroner's inquest taken from Ths tbs OcBAir.

This she claims is substantially tbe evidence under which she is held, aud she claims that it is entirely inaufiloieut to warrant her Imprisonment. Judge McAllister granted tha writ, anil waa asked to hear the ease at once. State's Attorney Mills, however, sent word to say that both he and his assistant were engaged and eoutd not attend to the ease; also, mat it was possible the Grand Jury might near it. Under me circumstances. Judge McAllister said tnat If there was any likelihood that either the present or next Grand Jury would take the matter uo he would not hear the case.

At any rate, he would not hear it In tna auaanaa ot the State' Attorney. Tbe hearing was than postponed without any fixed time for ita coming up again. A FINE BE COBB. One ot the most noteworthy examples ot ability to accomplish, which has recently occurred, is to be found la the record of the Hartford Life and Annuity Insurance Company. Iu cross receipts tor the year 1873 was more than half the amount ot its total liabilities, while its entire management has been and is of that reliable order which characterizes the 8 tat under which It Is organized.

One fact of value to Chieagoans is that more than hai: a million of its assets are invested in this immediate vicinity, and are ot tha most tangible order. From a personal inspection of IU affairs, we can cordially commend the Hartford Life and Annuity Company to the conflasnoe ot all. HE'S AN ARTIST. A Disclosure of Certain of His Views, Projects, and General Preference. Mr. Dion Boucicault last night eoncladed hU engagement at Haverly's. and Is now en route for San Francisco, where he exoects to arrive by Saturday night. Despite the fact that houses have been light, he calculates that the business otthe week has run nearly to S5.0OO.

Not desiring that tbe great expo nent ot Irish eomedy should leave with out notice, a representative of TbeIbteb Oceab last evening called upon him. Seated la a first-floor parlor of tbe Grand Pacific before a cheerful hearth-lire. Mr. Boucicault was eugaged In the delightful pastime of working up the proper amount of Inspiration necessary to a successful performaoee of the rollicking, devil-may-care role ot Con n. the Bhaugnraun.

Incidental thereto waa a long' necked pistol, fairly charged with a quantity ot extra fine bourbon, which stood upon a convenient table. Upon the dressing ease, a few feet distant, reposed with passive equa nimity a similar vessel of good cheer, labeled with the somewhat cabalistic word Brandy. Ita contents had been but about half abaorbed by the warmth of the room, and the remaining portion glistened a kindly welcome. No less genial was Mr. Boueicaolt- Bis little eyes twinkled in concert with the smile noon bis lips, and his now of the old school formula was courteously assuring.

It may be of In terest to note tnst there a kiw mustache struggling for existence uouer the eath loving nosa of the exponent, and It gives halo of youthfulness to the kindly face; albeit, the trenches ol me natuetieia are here and there aaen upon the face which has borne the brunt of City-six years.
