Towns Have Strange Origin Presents State Dam Power Sale Negotiations Delayed To June 1 Washington. April 13 UP) Negotiations for sale to public power agencies of Missouri basin energy bwaVdsovvs "Quality Within Your Budget' to be generated at Fort Randall and Garrison dams have been put off until June 1. Seemingly, it came to the village in 1905 when the Milwaukee built through that area. At first it had no name, but an immigrant for some reason cried to a teamster. "Can no back," and the phrase put a name on the town.

Of course, there may be more logical reasons, but the story of that origin still persists. Sulphur, up in the ranching part of Meade county, got its name from the Surphur springs in the area. It was in very early days a stopping point on a stage and freighting line. Hundreds of tons of mining equipment going to the Dead-wood mining area were hauled through there with ox trains. Now in forgotten glory it sleeps off the trail just a name.

Dakota is a land of names. Hundreds of others could be found. Many are not duplicated in the postal directory. Still looking at an old map one cannot but marvel at the imagination of the pioneer settlers and their ability to coin a name or a word when it was needed. 19d2, Garrison dam in 1954.

By NORMAN THOMAS (Special To Journal) Spearfish, April 13 There are interesting names in America, and the West River area of South Dakota is no exception. This area carries names which would do credit to the great poets, and like most western communities, shows a high degree ot inventive genius. Take for example the town named Capa. West of Fort Pierre on the North Western railway, it has less than a hundred residents but was once rather famous for its hot springs which are reputed to be the hottest in the state. The name is supposed to have been given to the village in 1907 when some settlers were arguing over several proposals and could agree on none.

One settler is supposed to have noticed a boxcar with the title on the side designating capacity and merely shortened the term, making it Capa City. Other stories say that Capa was named by the inventive Doane Robinson, dean of South Dakota historians. Still another story states the word Capa is the Indian word for beaver which abound in one of the nearby streams. Faith Then there is the story of the naming of Faith. It is a town of 522 people in the northeasternmost part of Meade county.

Faith, it is said, was named by the early residents from the characteristic need V) preserve their faith. Others say it was named for Faith Rockefeller. In August, 1940, someone sent them a $100 bill with the instructions to use it for civic improvement in the town which was named after the writer and the letter as anonymous! Names of the west. And there is Englewood, in southern Lawrence county a place of half a hundred persons. Once thought of as a junior Englewood, 111., because it seemed like a suburb of an urban area the South Dakota village being a suburb of Deadwood-Lcad. Englewood, once a switching yard for the which went down Spearfish Canyon now almost forgotten. Murdo Murdo, Jones county, with 700 people, carries an old and distinguished name. Murdo McKenzie, mighty cattle baron, who ran 20,000 head for the Matador Ranch, owned most of the land in the area.

When the Milwaukee railroad built through that area in the early 1900 they used the whple name of the rancher. Once a division point of the railroad, still a time change point, Murdo sits on a once great north-south cattle trail. No one disputes the origin of the name it is too well proved. Tehn there is Deadwood which carries that name because the proposers of another were not numerous enough. At one time they hoped to call the place Miles City, after General Nelson A.
