-a- -j. Muckers eye Scobey in state tourney The American Legion Class A baseball tournament will open Saturday in Glendive with eight Montana and two Canadian teams competing for one berth in the regional tournament. Normally the top two teams from the state tournament advance to the regionals, but this year the Anaconda A's who are the host team have already claimed one berth, limiting the draw from the state tournament to the winner of that four-day competition. The tournament opens at 9 a.m. with the Bitterroot Bucks playing a team from Fort McLeod, Alberta, followed at 12:30 by a game between Vauxhall, Alberta and the Missoula Reds.

The Butte Muckers' first game will be at 4 p.m. against Scobey. Saturday's competition will close out with a 7:30 game between the Billings Cardinals and the host Glendive team. Laurel and the Dillon Cubs, the other two teams in the tournament drew first-round byes, and will play their first games on Sunday, with Laurel meeting the winner of Saturday's game between Bitter-rot and Fort McLeod at 4 p.m., and Dillon taking the field at 7:30 against the winner of the Vauxhall-Missoula game. Butte Muckers Coach Mark Beckman reported that a win against Scobey will give the Muckers a bye until Monday.

A loss will send them into a 9 a.m. Sunday loser-out game against the Missoula-Vauxhall loser. Sunday's second game will also be loser-out, between the loser of the Bitterroot-Fort McLeod game and the Billings-Glen-dive game. Beckman said that his probable starting pitcher Saturday will be Ryan Maloney. tail photo by Mike Walsh Royals' catcher Aaron Leavitt holds onto the ball.

The two teams were scheduled to play two seven-inning contests because of a rainout on Tuesday, but the first game wasn't over before the rains came down, forcing a cancellation. Leary, who scattered six hits in the seven-plus innings, had just two earned runs charged against him, but ended up with no decision. The Miners picked up seven hits for their five runs, with Marty Ross getting Butte's only extra-base hit, a double, but committed twice as many errors as did the Royals. Because of the current standings in the seeding for the upcoming state Miners coach Jim Hanley didn't think the rainout would be made up.

"In the event the games do have to be played," Hanley said, "they will be here Tuesday." The Miners held a 1-0 lead after two innings.
