Standard; National League 9 Scoreboard 9 First Downs played in Reno Helena linebacker for bis second Ea st-West football a By Hudson Willse Standard porta Editor It wasn't just another letter that West Shrine team member Dan Downs opened last fall after making his final tackle for the Helena High Bengals! Downs, a linebacker training in Butte for the Downs. "I was excited," said the 6-3, 205-pounder. "I called the lady down at Stampede Enterprise (to make sure the air-expenses-paid trip was on the up-and upi "I didn't expect any All-American awards," said Downs, a first-team Class AA All-Stater who was named defensive MVP in the Western Conference and was runner-up to Great Falls Bison linebacker Brian Muzzana for the state accolade. Downs, 18, checked in at Reno July 1. "They had a heat wave down there and i thought it was going to be in the 100s, but it was like here, in the 80s," said Downs after completing his first workout with the West team Monday at Montana Tech's Leonard Field.

An inside linebacker at Helena High who's projected for the same position at the University of Montana, which he will attend on a full ride after the Shrine Game, Downs played out-" side linebacker for the West team in the national contest at Mackay Stadium. Sparked by the passing of Oklahoma-bound quarterback Cale Gundy of Midwest City, the West led 21-10 at halftime, only to lose 28-21 on a touchdown with 1:09 left by Notre Dame-recruit Jerome Bettis of Detroit. Downs, who made six solo tackles, assisted on two others and knocked down a pass, said he wasn't let down by the outcome "because wewere a 20 point underdog going into the game. "The only time I went out was for a breather," noted DownstJ'I played on all the special teams, too." Yet, he rated his performance as only average, but said he was satisfied. "I expected to be more awed by them," said Downs.

"I found that location has a lot to do with recruiting because you don't get looked at much in Montana. I've played with a lot of players in Montana who could, compete witk the kids picked to play there. "You don't see a lot of the moves that they put on in Montana," Downs went on. "They were all good. There weren't any weak ones on either team.

There were some super ones, too." Montana's Shrine Game means more to Downs "because down there I had nothing to prove, but here the community kind of knows me. That puts more pressure on me. I didn't have any pressure down there. "I'm just going to come out here to have fun and try to do my best. I'm not going to let the pressure get to me." It'll be "school first" Downs at the University of Montana.

Undecided about his major. Downs pulled a 3.2 cumulative grade point average at Helena High. His father, John, teaches child psychology at Carroll College- East-west Shnne Game at Great Falls Aug. 11, was informed that he had been selected to play in the first National High School Ail-American Classic Football Championship in Reno July He was one of 80 players invited to play in the game by organizer Dan Crookham, athletic director at Tulsa's Will DOWNS Rogers High School. Several of them were USA Today All-USA picks, including Downs, an honorable mention selection.

Brewers top Kings HELENA Mike Carter lashed two-run double with one but in the bottom of the ninth Tuesday night, giving the Helena Brewers a gutsy 5-4 win over the Butte Copper Kings. Butte remained 1'2 games behind Idaho Falls in the Southern Divi-. sion. Helena thanks to clutch hitting by Carter and Randy Hood has now won eight of its last nine games and is 20-17 overall. The Brewers entered the bottom of the ninth trailing 4-2, with Butte tallying a run inihe top oLthe in--ning after Helena reliever Brian Souza (2-2) walked Todd Guggiana with the bases loaded.

Brewer, catcher Rob Beck began the rally with a single, and Tony Diggs pinch ran for Beck. Pinch-hitter Chris Wheat then looped a single to right field and took when hard-charging Butte outfielder Malvin Matos let the ball roll past him for an error. Diggs scored on the play, bringing the Brewers to within one, 4-3. Mike Norris, pinch-hitting for outfielder Mike then walked on four pitches, putting runners on first and second for Hood, who had singled and doubled. Butte's Tim Wells then relieved pitcher Matt Whiteside (1-2), and on a 1-1 pitch Hood bunted down the third base line, sacrificing Wheat and Norris to second and third.

Carter then stepped to the plate and stroked the first pitch from Wells, a hanging slider, into deep rightcenter field. "The first one is the best one usually," a grinning Carter said afterward. "I thought he'd throw a fastball, but I saw him shake off the first sign. Then I looked for something off-speed." He credited Hood's sacrifice bunt for creating the game-winning situation. "Randy did the job Car ter said, "Everybody seems to be pretty loose right now." In addition to the sacrifice, Hood was 2-4 at the plate with a double and two runs scored.

"That was a nice one," Brewer Manager Gary Calhoun said following the win. "We didn't feel good when we walked in the fourth run, but we knew we could come back. "We've been moving runners in key spots and knocking them in." Indeed. Helena opened the scoring in the first when Hood' singled and advanced to third on two infield outs. Tim Carter then slapped an RBI single to leftfield, his league-leading 36th RBI.

ZD tnnariinez, ourxs, r-isx IJI, Stevens MILWAUKEE (AP) Nolan Ryan, a pitcher defined by great numbers, finally got the number AMERICAN LEAGUE that defines great pitchers. Ryan won his 300th game Tuesday night, reaching the milestone in his second try and ensuring his place in history as the Texas Rangers beat the Milwaukee Brewers 11-3. "I feel more relieved thali anything else after all the buildup," Ryan said. "I really don't know, in the scheme of things, what this will mean for me personally," But if there was any lingering debate about whether Ryan belonged in the Hall of Fame and how could there be? then this achievement certainly cinched it. The game's all-time strikeout leader, the fastballer with a record six no-hitters, became the 20th major leaguer to get 300 victories.

Every other pitcher to win that many was elected to Cooperstown when eligible, except spitballer Gaylord Perry. Ryan, though, is probably the only one not talking about his statistics. Never has, and never did in the minutes after his accomplish-ment. "I'm sure people will find this hard to believe, but I'm not numbers-oriented. I don't set numbers goals," he said.
