The Rev. William Archibald Spooner, who has just been elected warden of the ancient and important Wykhamist foundation of New College, Oxford, is one of England's most famous men. He is a great scholar, but is famous for his defective eyesight and his peculiar aptitude for transposing letters and word while speaking. His amusing blunders of speech have become classics in college literature. Some Amusing Blunders.

The stories current at Oxford associated with Air. Spooner' extreme shortsightedness re numerous. Most of them are scarcely intended to be credible, such as his chasing his hat that had blown down a side street in a gale and returning to his lodgings with a black hen that he had captured after long pursuit. But one that is not current and is true is perhaps worth recording. In the early eventies he served as cure just outside Oxford.

On his first Sunday there he ascended the pulpit with (as he thought) his college cap, according to a prevalent custom, in his hand. But the congregation were much astonished when they noticed the new curate deposit on the pulpit cushion a rusty, black, fiat, wooden inkstand, which he had picked Up by mistake from the vestry table. One of the best of these curious transpositions, which is but little known, led Mr. Spooner. in his absent minded way, into much waste of time.

Once when in town hei is said to have gone by appointment to meet a friend at Greenwich. Arriving there, he proceeded to inquire for The Dull Man," which he conceived to be the name of the hostelry where they were to meet. But after traversing the town from end to end and inquiring everywhere he had to return a disappointed man. Meanwhile his friend was in vain awaiting him at the Green Man. Dulwich.

Victim of College Wit. A few years ago," says a Cambridge LL. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Spooner at lunch at a private house at Cambridge, where we had both been attending a poor law conference. Finding him an amiable conversationalist I ventured to ask him if the amusing transposition stories so generally assigned to him were in reality his own.

He genially replied that of course there was never any smoke without some tire, but that, for the most part, he was the victim of undergraduate wit, adding that his friends usually kept him well supplied and amused, term by term, with his imaginary blunders." "Boils His Icicle." I will tell you the. last," said Mr. Spooner, it relates to a recent slight catastrophe. I was returning the other evening along the Witney road, when, as I neared the station owing to my indifferent sight, I ran into a man who was stupidly crouching down at the edge of the footpath; we rolled over together and were both bruised. It was my said the stranger 10 me on recovering hls breath, but I was only stooping to boil my 'Oil my bicycle I ought to have said," continued Mr.

Spooner, save that the whole story is entirely apocryphal." These messengers have now returned to Pekin. One traveled to Kuyuen with ai number of carters conveying grain to Gen. Tung's army, it thus appearing at the start that Tung has a regularly organized foromteary department. At Kuyuen, the home of the commander in chief and at the market town of Hen-cheng-tsi' farther to the north, the messenger saw on very side signs of constant military activity While five miles southeast of Heh he found the principal camp of Tung's army.

This place, formerly the stronghold of an ancient Mongol family, has been fortified by a new wall inclosing Tung's house, a garrison of l.WW men. and an arsenal for the manufacture of ammunition and firearms The messenger declared that he had been told that Tung had 2iM rifles stored here and that some of the ammunition was no-moke." Among the troops here assembled are foreign drilled soldiers, who drill every afternoon for the edification of the other troops, the exact or even approximate number of which is left much In the dark. One messenger said that there were forty regiments of 500 men each; another messenger, that there were but twenty regiments enrolled uniformed, but that there were many more hangers on waiting to be enlisted in Tung's army. Tung himself is described by the messenger, who saw him walking around the wall orhis" military camp, as a man of medium height, stout, with a long, white beard, sharp pointed, and wearing a yellow jacket. The troops wear no settled uniform, but most of them have suits of black twill calico (sie pu) and a miscellaneous assortment of headgear.
