BALTIMORE, SATURDAY. APRIL U. 1S4. FROM OCR CORMWPONDKNT0 Washington City, April 10, 1840. Mr.

Bodisco, the Russian Minister, Chamber-Iain to the Emperor of Russia, actual counsellor, -J Ynr tVio Tv TVfr. was marneu jcjw Johns, of Miss Williams, a young lady of surpassing beauty, talents, wit and virtue. It is a matter of gratulation that Mr. Bodisco has at last got married, for the fact will put an end to an immense amount of "Bristol gossip and Canterbury scandal," that was for four or five months retailed in this city, and by the presses of the day, in reference to his amours. In the promulgation of all the twattle; to which I refer, that it was as mortifying to him as it was onen-sive or disgusting to every well educated and well disciplined mind.1 He was a public man, JM however, the representative of the Autocrat of all the Russias, and as a body of toadys sucked and crot bonnica on his hospitalities, he did not escape their kind offices and their kind offices led them to inquire into the "Loves of the angels," and retail them to the community.

His Excellency is a marrie'd man at last, and with others, most heartily wish him a pilgrimage of bliss and if loveliness, worth, intelligence and beauty, all combined in one fair creature, can cement the fulness of eternal joy, he is sure to enjoy all that I could wish him, or his hopes and prayers aspire to. This is a season of connubial bliss and of love. The flowers of the field and of the forest are in full bloom, and May, the blythesome month of May, anticipating its own advent, spreads her enchantments around us. In the way of accumulating population, the eity has within the last few days been signally blest The theories of Malthus, and Jeremy Bentham, and Adam Scott, all sink into nothingness when placed in contrast with well authen-. iicated and recorded facts.

In proof of this broad assertion, I itate, that within the last two days, if a gentleman who keeps a record can be xelied on, fifty-seven children have been born! Among those who have added to the happiness nf the a cp and tn its nnrmlatinn. there is a ladv. who, yesterday morning presented her husband three daughters at one birth. One of the innocents died immediately after it came into this breathing world the other two are living and promise to do well. The lady, I am happy to say, is as well as could be expected.

In the House of Representatives to-day, "the ball was opened" by Mr. C. Cushing, of Massachusetts, on a motion submitted by Mr. Briggs, some days ago to amend the rules, so as to abolish the committee on Public Expenditures. A debate ensued, in which Messrs.

Cushing, Briggs, and others participated, a report wTiir ih wmilrl hp. tKppmcA pmiallv tpriiniis. unne- eessary auiu iiuc uy ui yuur icucis. jjciuic it "was concluded the morning hour expired, and the subject was laid upon the table. The House now went into committee of the i it tj whole, Gov.

Casey of Illinois in the chair, and took up the civil and diplomatic appropriation bill, and Mr. Duncan, of Ohio, took the floor, and went on to make a political anti Harrison speech. "He was discoursing when I closed. The Senate was employed all day with the consideration of a bill to revive the act of 1S26, reference to certain private claims in the States of Mississippi and Arkansas. tt Monday last, Mr.

Hillen, of Maryland, offered a resolution instructing the committee on military affairs to enquire into the expediency authorizing the immediate commencement of a fort on Sollers? Point Flats, in the Patapsco, for the defence of the harbor of Baltimore. Two Lives Lost. On Tuesday fast, as Morton Crosby and Elijah Perigo, two farmers of Sardinia, Erie county, New York, were returning from mill, the wagon was upset, and both killed. Early on Wednesday morning the overturned wagon was discovered near the road side with the two horses attached to it, quietly awaiting an order to move onward. Each of the deceased was perhaps sixty years old.

Large Oyster. A Mobile paper states thai an oyster was recently taken near that city, which measured three feet one, inch in length and twenty-three and a half inches across the widest part of it. It is our opinion that it is a mud turtle, which the Mobilians have caught and mistaken for an oyster, as the largest of this species, which abound in and about the Chesapeake, -seldom stray away so far. The Boston Times, in copying an article from this paper respecting the high-handed out-zage committed by the Portuguese authorities on the passengers and crew of the brig Boxer, says "We see nothing in the affair itself to justify the unqualified terms made use of by that paper." Perhaps not, but that is altogether owing to the peculiar state of the atmosphere in which you live, Mr. Times.

Direct Tax. In the House of Representatives of Pennsylvania, on Wednesday, the bill providing lor a direct tax was considered, but after a good deal of discussion, the first section was negatived yeas 39, nays 40. This decides the fate of the bill, though it is probable the subject will be brought up in another shape. Accidental Death. Mr.

Peter Stillman, jr. of Rockport, (Mass.) while on a gunning excursion, on Tuesday afternoon, in company with another person, was almost instantly killed, by the accidental discharge of his own gun. Consuls. The President of the States bos recognized Augustus W. Radcliff as Consul of Texas for the port' of New York, and Oliver CPHara, as Vice Consul of the Netherlands, at Key West i otitic- tim WA tm.

Improving. Business in Boston. Later from England and France. The N. York Courier and Enquirer has received by the ship St Lawrence, Capt.

Bunker, from Liverpool, dates from that place of the 11th, and from London to the 10th ultimo and Jby the packet ship Albany, Capt Watson, from Havre, Paris dates to the 8th ultimo. The accounts trom London possess little in terest here. The most important item in general polities that we find in these papers, is the particulars of the force England has directed or is about to direct against Unina, tne magnnuae of which would indicate that the intentions of the British Government are not confined to the mere mercantile question, but that she contem plates territorial acquisitions or the overthrow of the Chinese Government and when it is re collected that the native princes ot India were subdued and the foundations of the British Em pire there, laid by, comparatively speaking, handful of men, there can De utue uouut mat with the means England has now will succeed in her plans of conquest, however vast they may be. The monev market of London appears to be in about the same position as at the date of our last advices. Expedition to China.

We are enabled to lay before our readers this week, a correct statement of the Darticulars of the vessels which have already sailed, and are yet to sail, for the purpose of vindicating Britain honor on the coast of China. The Blenheim, 74 guns, sailed direct for China from Portsmouth, on the 17thebru-aryj Melville, 74 guns, from the Capej Welles-ley, 74 guns, from the Indian station; Blonde, 46, direct from Plymouth, on the 26th February Druid, 4S, from the -Cape, via Sydney, on the 5th November; Pylades, 18, direct from Plymouth, on the 23d February; Nimrod 20, from Plymouth on the 24th February, (with duplicate instructions for Admiral Elliot;) Modeste, 18, from the Cape, on the 5th November; Wanderer, 18, sailed for the Cape on the 12th February from Plymouth, with orders to Admiral Elliot to proceed with all his corvettes, and take command in China. Besides these ships, ano ther 74 has orders; the Pique, 38; Andromanche, 28; 10 vessels from the Indian station, from 18 to 23 guns each, part of the Indian navy; vessels from the Cape station, 18 guns each; 2 from the South American station, 18 and 28 guns each; 2 from the South Wales station, 11 and 28 guns each; 2 large steamers, supposed to be the Sesostris and the Queen. The expedition includes from 12 to 15,000 men. London Commercial Journal.

Liverpool, Jllarch 10th. Our Cotton market continues dull, without any particular change. The sales on Saturday, the 7tn, were 2,500 and yesterday, the 9th, they were 3,000. The George Washington arrived on the 10th. The ship Rochester made the land in 15 days.

Liverpool Corn Market, March 9th. During the last seven days there have been imported 6S0 barrels of Flour from the U. States. Through out this period the Wheat trade has continued in that inert position in which we have had occasion to' report for several previous weeks. There is little free American Fl0ur now in the market; it is selling in small parcels at 44s 6d to 45s per barrel.

From 4,000 to 5,000 barrels have changed hands, in bond, at 31s per barrel. The Portuguese government has at length dissolved the Cortes. Havre, March 7. Our rates for cotton have fallen from 2 to 3 cents for all qualities below fair. On the better sorts the reduction has been only It.

per 1-2 kilo. A ministry has been formed in France, with M. Thiers at the head. The internal situation of France is not improved. Bankruptcies are lamentably numerous, and trade in a deplorable condition.

This applies in a peculiar manner to the cotton manufacture. There is no demand for the raw material. Hundreds, nay, thousands of families engaged in that branch of manufacture are thrown out of employment, and are consequently starving. E. M.

America Vespucci. This lady is probably by this time afloat, and on her way back to Europe, whence she came in the expectation that, as a descendant of Amerigo Vespucci, from whom this continent derives its name, she would receive "a great national gift" in the hope of "a spot of ground where she might pass a tranquil existence." Being disappointed in her hope, Congress having no constitutional power to accede to her wishes, she has refused to accept of individual tributes, and declined the offer of a large donation, the first subscription to which had been made by the Ui.S. Senate, and which had received large additions in various places. She recently addressed a letter to the New Or leans Bee, expressive of her feelings, resigning her claims, declining acceptance of individual donations, thanking all who have been kind to her, and declaring her intention to return to Europe. It may be that a sense of national gratitude, if not of justice, might have been more ready to acknowledge the claims of a known descendant of Cplumbus; but be that as it mayi we confess that the tone of Miss Ves pucci's farewell letter has riven us a better opinion of her heart and principles, than our view of her claims had previously led us to en terlain.

She had been led, from childhood, to look upon America as her country and the mixture of dignity and calm submission, with which she bears the blight of her long- cherished hopes, has something very touching in it much more than we expected from one who came on such an errand as hers; and who might with equal justice have preferred similar claims to the gratitude of any other portion of the American continent, as to that of these States. Captain James Riley, whose narrative of sufferings, extraordinary perils, and adventures, during a long captivity among the wild Arabs on the southern coast of Africa, has rendered his name familiar to all, died on the 15th ult, aged 63 years, on board of his brig, the William Tell, bound to Mogadore to which port he has been a trader for the last twenty-five years. More Defalcations The Norfolk Beacon of Thursday says: "Rumors reached town by the Richmond boat yesterday, that there had been an overdrawing of an account by some thirty thousand dollars in the Bank of Virginia, and that the officer, through whose oversight it had been committed, had Charge op Murder. Miller, 'mentioned in our paper of yesterday as being charged with the murder of a man named Green, in New Orleans, on the 30th ult has been examined before the Recorder, and fully committed for trial. We know a lady of this city whose hair was so nearly gone as to expose entirely her phrenological developments, which, considering that they betokened a most amiable disposition, was not in very unfortunate.
