Amherst, Nov. and Williams played a 0 to 0 spectacular game on Pratt field today. The game was the most important of the season for both teams. The field was muddy and fast Work was Impossible.

was an ideal day, and the field. thanks to the efforts of the Princeton management, was in a fair condition in spite of the snow of two dayaago. The wind, which so often playa a prominent part in these contests, owing to the new rules producing more kicking, was considerate enough to be no more than a. zephyr. Princeton.

therefore. on winning the toes, the- kickoff. thus showing that its captain considered the wind a negligible quantity. The crowd was a magnificent ones and, there was hardly a moment during the contest that it seemed possible to withdraw one'. eyes from the field lest, as many expressed it.

something should happen. Both teams proved themselves thoroughly versed in the new possibilities of the rules and made use of forward passes and onside kicks frequently. But the defense of each had been initiated into the mysteries of these plays, an although each side gained occasionally with some of these variations. neither could catch the defense of the other napping seriously. Honors Even in First Half.

During tbe first half. although the distance gained by Its advantage of the kickoff put the ball 1n Yale territory, the position of the struggle was twice and three times charged. Yale succeeded in gettirg near enough to try twice at Princeton's goat. and PrIticetoti executed, a forward pass. which, had there not been bolding, would have turned the tide6 On the whole, the first half was a off.

teither side having succeeded in breaking through the opposing defense. and, every one of the followers of the game realized that the next thirty minutes would bring together two teams whdee reputation was that of wonderful aggressiveness and recuperation in the second half. Princetonhad shown its quality In the Cornell game, and Yale in the Brown game. The partisans of each were crying, Walt till the second half! arid the excitemert was correspondingly Interee. Dillon, the star quarter back of the Princeton team, bad upon several occasions' In the first half brought the crowd to its feet with his clever running back of kicks and the principal gains of hie side had come from the ability of this player in that particular province.

But on the whole the Yale ends and their supporters in the line had so carefully covered him that he bad failed to get loose, ale though upon one occasion he was quite clear only to be reached by the Yale halfback. The Princeton men were saying. "Dillon, will get free some time during the next half." while Yale was saying, Walt until our attack is shot at them in the next half." Only Waiting for McCormick. Princeton was looking forward to the time when McCormick should come to the rescue as be had done against Cornell, and Yale was thinking of the straight run of repeated gains that bad In six plays in the Brown game netted a total of sixty-two yards. Both teams galloped on.

to the field for the final struggle. and then each proceeded to make its desperate effort. Princeton began to drive McCormick and be fought hard. but the Yale line was too strong in its defense. For a few moments it seemed as if Princeton had found a pathway through the center's guard, but it closed up like steel.

Then Yale's turn came. and-cutting-loose a ripping attack the line of blue beget. to move upon Princeton. Just 1ntheIr gait a penalty took them hopelessly back. Then followed a short kicking duel between Veeder and McCormick.

who was tried in the punting department for Princeton. Then Jones got in a quarter back that set the ball rolling for Yale. It was now or never as the moments were flying fast, and thirty minute halves teem but twenty when a team is fighting tot a score. Time Up and No Goal. Linn.

who had taken the place of Knox. on whom much of the brunt of the battle had fallen. began to twist and turn through the Princeton line and Forbes would go lunging forward for yards. Morse then jumped through a gap on Princeton's left. Then Linn came again.

and from the middle of the field the stakes had been moved again and again towards, Princeton's goal. Yale had got within striking distance ard every play was netting its gain. Now. the Yale etands were crying for a touchdown. only ten yards away.

Roome, the heavy. plunging full back, went running out into the A yell came from the Yale cohorts aa ihey realized that the moment had come. Then a pause. Something was the matter. Could it be a penalty? The referee had picked up the hall from its position within the fifteen yard line and wee paying no attention, to the spot where It had been down.

For an instant no one understood it, and then It all came over them that the time was up the game ended, and the result no score. Yale played far beyond what the critic had accredited the ability of the team. On defense the Yale men everywhere were strong. Individually and collectively. while the attack displayed In the second half was the most consistent and effective.

They were strong tn the kicking department, versatile in running attack, and were coming faster every moment. Princeton was good in the kicking and the defense in the first half, but it failed to stem the Yale attack In the second. It was clean, goodi football from start to finish.
