He pulled up to Sabinal's shoulder at the fifth check point just below Boston College, 21.6 miles-from the start. Then he burst in front, pulled away and had enough left to hold off Mora's late challenge. Housewife Tops Distaff Runners BOSTON (AP) Nina Kus-csik, a 33-year-old Huntington, N.Y., housewife, plied the 26-mile, 385-yard Boston Athletic Association Marathon course in 3 hours, 8 minutes, 58 seconds Monday to become the first woman ever to officially cross the finish line.

Mrs Kuscsik, mother of two children, out-distanced eight other female entrants and carried the colors of the Suffolk Athletic Club to victory lane where she was crowned with a laurel wreath by Will Cloney, the marathon chairman. Mrs. Kuscsik finished about 55 minutes behind the men's winner, Finland's Olavi "I had no idea I was going to win," Suomalainen said through an interpreter. "When we got on the hills, I started to feel better. I knew I was going to catch the Mexican, but I was afraid someone would catch me.

I didn't have any strategy. I just ran the way I do, and hoped I could catch them." Suomalainen weighs only 125 pounds, but packs muscles on a 5-foot-8 frame. Suomalainen dominated a field of 1,081 starters from a total of 1,224 entries, the second largest in BAA history despite strict qualifying conditions. His time was far short of the record of 2:10.30 set by England's Ron Hill two years ago. Clairmont Resigns Coaching Duties RONAN Jim Clairmont, head football coach at Ronan High School the past two years, has resigned his coaching duties.

Clairmont resigned from the post in order to devote more time to his family and teaching duties. His 1971 team finished with a 6-1-1 record and tied for first place in the District 7-B conference. Wally Sims will succeed Clairmont as head football coach. Gerard Kapsenberg, secretary-general of the Dutch Union, said this Monday after receiving information from the International Chess Federation that Fischer has refused to play either in Belgrade or Reykjavik. Kapsenberg said that for the International Chess Federation only one solution remained: disqualification of Fischer. The board of the Dutch Union considers Fischer's attitude reprehensible, Kapsenberg said, adding: "Following these Fischer maneuvers all the trumps are now in the hands of the Russians.

Fischer would now have to beg the Russian Chess Union on his knees for a new deal. One cannot possibly expect Spassky to accept another agreement without cast-iron guarantees." The International Chess Federation requested the Dutch Union to take over the organization of half the match from Belgrade, which withdrew its offer. The other half of the match was to have been in Iceland. time at any of the banquets since the program began in .1958. "If the layoff was going to affect us, it would have shown up "Accurate figures on the losses are hard to come by," Kis said, "but I feel we may lose more deer to these two causes than hunters harvest." Kis reported that aerial observations of elk populations in the South and Middle Fork drainages of the Flathead River showed that the animals had suffered a severe winter.

"Cow-calf ratios are down slightly," Kis said. "The ratio varies from 17 to 25 calves per 10C cows." He said this points out that the elk had a severe winter. Kis reported the elk in the Middle and South Fork drainages to be well scattered and generally in good shape, however, adding that the moderate weather in February and early March had helped bare south slopes in the area so they get at feed. A total of 11 grizzly were-killed in the district last fall by hunters and three were destroyed in livestock operations, Kis said. He said the department could pin down no illegal kills of grizzly bears last fall, although in some years there are as many illegal as legal kills.

Kis, appealing on the program of the Northern Continental Conservation Committee at its annual meeting here Sunday, said the area had had "some excessive road kills linked to heavy snows" this past winter. However, Kis said he was more concerned about what he termed "heavy deer kills" by packs of dogs attacking and killing doer in their wintering areas. He explained that the doer are in a weakened condition at this time of the year and that numerous reports had come to the department of domestic dogs killing deer.

Kis termed this an "unnatural effect" on deer populations and said the problem was very bad in the lower elevations of the Flathead where the snow has driven the wildlife. "I feel some type of legislation is going to have to be forthcoming to take care of dogs that are harassing wildlife," Kis said. He said that sometimes the department gets two or three calls a morning reporting either dog or car kills of deer. Bowling SS7. ISM.
