20 Missoullan, Sunday, June 5, 1983 Sports briefs East last year with a 65-97 record. This season, they had a 16-30 record and again were in last place. Besides Howard, Weaver and Frey, other 1984 managerial candidates include Dave Johnson, the manager of the Mets' farm team in Tidewater, and Bobby Valentine, the Mets' third base coach. American loses bid to win British Amateur golf title TURNBERRY, Scotland (AP) British Walker Cup player Philip Parkin, a business major at Texas University, won the 36-hole final of the British Amateur Golf Championship 5 and 4 and spoiled Jim Holtgrieve's bid of becoming the 15th American since World War II to win the title. The 35-year-old Holtgrieve, a steel dealer from St.

Louis, was unable to take advantage of his experience and never displayed his best form on the Turnberry links in the bright Scottish sunshine that had followed one of the wettest weeks in the championship's history. Holtgieve blamed both his putting and his driving for his failure to turn the day into his first victory in a national final. "I made far too many mistakes to put Philip under any kind of real pressure," said Holtgrieve. "In match play you need to start well and I started badly both in the morning and in the afternoon round. "It was a great disappointment for me because I've been playing well all week and I had been looking forward to doing the same today.

But I had a sleepless night last night and I must have been too keyed up." Women's long jump mark falls BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) Anisoara Cusmir of Romania bettered her own world record in the women's long jump Saturday, clearing 24 feet, 4 Vz inches at an international track and field meet. Cusmir, 21, held the previous mark of 23-8, which she set earlier this year. She also holds the best indoor mark at 22-8 Vz, Britain's Jones wins marathon STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) Hugh Jones of Britain, running his first race in a year, overtook American leader Paul Cummings in a dramatic finish Saturday and held on to win the Stockholm Marathon. Cummings, who suffered from cramps and was forced to slow down with just three miles left, eventually finished third behind Agapius Masong of Tanzania. Jones, sidelined with an injury after winning last year's London Marathon, was timed in 2 hours, 11 minutes and 37 seconds.

It was the fastest time ever in this race, almost two minutes faster than American Bill Rodgers' winning time of 2:13:26 set two years ago. And Jones' great comeback probably earned him a berth on the British team in the World Track and Field Championships in Helsinki later this summer. "Yes, I'm ready for the World Championships, but I haven't been selected yet," he said after finishing the 26-mile race at the Olympic Stadium. Wyoming shooter takes top honors in Memorial Open skeet Shooters from Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Washington competed in the Memorial Open held last weekend at the Missoula Trap and Skeet Club, The 12-gauge event on Friday was won by Dene Cogdill of Missoula with a perfect score of 100 100. Bill Nelson of Missoula defeated John Nickman of Missoula for the runner-up spot in that event after a shoot-off of 97 100. Nelson later won the 20-gauge event after tying Mike Henderson with 100 100 and beating him in the shoot-off. The 28-gauge event ended with three shooters tied with scores of 99 100 Nelson, Norm Caufield, Spokane, and Henderson. After the shoot-off, Nelson again emerged as champion leaving Caufield as runner-up. The 12-gauge event Sunday ended in a tie of perfect scores between Henderson and Dennis Staves of Missoula.

Henderson won the shoot-off when Staves missed on Station 6 and captured his second championship of the shoot. Henderson was also named high overall champion with a score of 397 400, missing only three targets in the main events and tying the club record for a high overall score. Nelson broke the best score of his career and finished the shoot with 393 400. Jay Schnelle was named high junior shooter in the 12-gauge event and Barbara Clark of Great Falls was high lady. (AP) -Hugh Miller, continuing his history of clutch performances on national television, rolled a 237 Saturday to beat Bob Handley by 12 pins and win the $100,000 Tucson Open on the Pro Bowlers Tour. Miller, a fifth-year pro, won two straight games en route to the third title of his career and the $13,000 first-place prize. The 26-year-old left-hander, who last won in 1980, has now emerged victorious all three times he has appeared in the nationally televised championship round.

Miller's victory, however, was aided by a series of bad breaks for Handley, the hottest tour member who was making his fourth consecutive championship-round appearance. Jim Poulos was third and pocketed $5,500. Mike Aulby earned $4,500 for finishing fourth. is on an interim basis," Howard said, "but it doesn't bother me." Among those considered in the running for next year is Earl Weaver, who retired as Baltimore Orioles manager following last year. "I won't even speculate on that," Cashen said when asked who would manager the Mets next year.

"I'm more concerned with this season." Bamberger resigned after 1 '4 years as Mets manager, saying: "I feel the present situation is too much of a strain the manager has to suffer when the team doesn't do well, and I don't want to suffer any more. I feel exhausted." Cashen said selecting Howard was difficult because another Met coach, Jim Frey, a former manager of the Kansas City Royals, is "probably the brightest unemployed manager in the big leagues today."
