Judge Shay appointed Wm, De Pui Chief Burgess of Tamaqua, he being of the sa.m.e political faith as James Hodgkins, who was duly elected, but who resigned.

The following persons plead guilty before Judge Marr: A plea of aggravated assault and battery was accepted in the case in which Robert Davis, colored, ol Pottsville, was charged with attempting to kill Thomas Gallagher, of New Castle. Davis was sentenced to pay a line of $50, the costs and to serve two years.

Davis told Judge Marr that Gallagher had insulted his lady friend and that when he interfered he struck hiiri and was about to hit with a stone when he stabbed him. Chief Davis told the court that when Davis waj first confronted with the stabbing that he denied it. John McKenna, of town, plead guilty to a charge of common oath of John M. Slmvlin. and was sentenced to pay a fine of $2, the costs, and to serve four months.

The- officer frankly admitted that the law is thus' violated, but not nearly as much now as some time ago. There was a big revival in the -township and the large number of conversions has reduced the demand foist rong drink, in Delano. The constable declared he had made an earnest effort, upon several occasions to learn the names of the offenders, but' he failed. 'The court advised that upon discovering any one thus engaged he should go to the pur chasers and there try to learn the names of the parties selling beer in tliis manner and return the names to the District Attorney.

It was "learned, however, that the Judge wanted to know something concerning tlie fight at the saloon on North Centre street, near Minersville, on Sunday afternoon. Down the Pike. Mr. Brunim succeeded in finding' the constable of North Manheim towtv-ship, and brought him into Court. Mr.

He admitted he had heard people talk about the character of the house. He had made several calls but had never seen anyone dis-s orderly. Mr. Brumim. asked Hie constable why he did not amswer him when he eadled him in the Treasurer's office, and ho answered he hadn't heard him cill, and added he wasn't afraid to come when he is called at any time.

Judge Bechtel Gives Several of Them Peremptory Order. Notwithstanding the constables braved the heat to come to Pottsville to make their quarterly returns to court, Judge Bechtel made it still hotter for some, who are accused by persons in their bailiwicks with neglect of duty. There was a stir among the members of the constabulary and among several interested members as with joyous hearts and smiling faces they romp and play when in health and how conducive to health tlie.
