The constant receipt of such evidences as the above, from different parts of the country, of the advantage of dealing in Baltimore, cannot hut be satisfactory to all who look to the commercial prosperity of (ho city.

That our merchants are able to sell their goods as cheap as they can be procured in New York or Philadelphia, whilst the purchaser saves the additional expense of freight and travel attendant on a visit to those cities, has hitherto been a secret only known to those ho invariably deal here. The fact that these country merchants sell cheaper than their neighbors, and make more money, has divulged the secret, and now we find the result apparent in I he great extent of business transacted by our wholesale and retail merchants. Although they practice the credit system in selling to an extent that sometimes (seriously eflects their own interests, they are regarded by the manufacturers and importers at the north as the best and most punctual of their customers, buying at cash and. short credits, so that in (he competition to secure them they are enabled to lay in their stocks at exceedingly low prices, and sell at corresponding' rates. We have been urging on the western and southwestern dealers fur years this important fact, and wc are gratified to find that they have at last opened their eyes to the truth of our recommendations.

Pardoned We learn that last week, his Excellency, Gov. Pratt, extended a pardon 'o the promptings of a foolish ambition, undertook to outrun the locomotive, got ahead tipjii the kiward 1' itZKerald, a convict in the tVlarylarnt track, and fell a victim to her success; unwarn- penitentiary. His wile has been indefatigable in tier ctlorts to ohlain lus pardon. Violation of Ordinance. QiKaerh Knighton ed by the fate of the heroic bull, who calamitously fell while indulging a similar ambition, in an effort to butt a locomotive at full speed, out of hia way.

In the case of the cow, the justice nonsuited the plaintiff. Now, however anil Ray on Saturday arrested a man named Phi'ip E. Thomas, for being drunk and lying on the benches in the market house. He was fined JJ and coats by Justice Miller. 4 deeply we may lament the untimely end of cow whose exalted spirit of emulation merited IIol.lii.ay Street Thkatkb.

Bill in the 32d year of her engineer would be exceedingly culpable and highly Censurable in such a proceeding; but we do not see how be cjuld lie responsible to any one but the company; or the company responsible to any but passengers, who might be sufferers through the folly of their agent. Kailroad companies arc not the most popular of incorporated bodies on the face of the globe, according loour observations; and being corporations, necessarily void of the delicate susceptibilities of the soul, an opportunity is seldom lost to make them requite not only an "eye for an eye," but Joaicllmei two for one, But then railroad companies like thing else with us, are, as they ought to be, created only by the will of the people and for the public good. Every privilege they enjoy and every power they exercise, is jealously delegated and carefully prescribed; yet they have rights, withal, the ideas of some people to the contrary, notwithstanding; and rights, too, so nearly allied to the interests of the com munity, that they can be neither violated nor destroyed without detriment to the public convenience, safety or general good. One of tlicaa rights, mid the most important, consists, as in individuals, of ample protection in the exercise and enjoyment of all; and for the express bene tit of the community, the people will in due lime see that this is conferred upon them. They have "the right of way," but hitherto the no tion scenvj to have, prevailed that they are not to have the use of "the right of way," without paying for all consequences therein, that may enure to those who choose to dispute, it ith them, by allowing their cattle the run cf the track.

The question resolves itself into a very simple form, and is merely to this purpose: whether it is the duty of the farmer to keep his cattle on his own premises, or the duty of the railroad company to keep them off the track. Wc hold the former proposition to be the true one. Those -who hold to the latter, must neccssaiily con Knives and Forks, Scissors. Work Boxes, with thou Wasmincton Oitv, Sept. 5, lSlf.
