10 CITY'S CEHTEIIIIIftL THEME III FULPI IS Chicago's Growth in One Hundred Years Marvelous, but Who Can Predict Its Future Greatness. CHRISTIAN VIEW OF LYNCHINGS Tfce Rt. B. A. Gmi Says? Tkat Haaa-" lav, Skootlasr, sr Baralasr Wretch "Will 3tet Ib4 ke Crime Walea He Has Com sal tied.

Today Is the. centennial anniversary of the permanent settlement of Chicago the be ginning OI run rar- Centeaalal born. It will be cele Taeaae of Blahop bra ted by the Chicago Historical so I y. Fallows. The anniversary erred vesterdav as a text ii many pulpits.

The pastors drew their lessons from the early struggles and rapid rise of the city, touched on the problems and needs that confront It today, and gave prophecy of Its ultimate power. In St. Paul's Reformed Epslcopal church tsisnop allows, in a pi ciunc iu mi wiuiwu, aata: "The one hundredth anniversary of the birthday of Chicago occurs tomorrow, Aug. 17. A small trading post in a tiny Indian Tillage was Its genesis.

By gradual steps it became a tort and settlement. At rapid speed it emerged Into a growing town. With gathering energy It kept leaping forward as a city, adding territory to territory, increasing In numbers, outvying itself, astonishing Its most ardent friends, silencing toe croakers, transcending all prophecies, rising a new Chicago out of the ashes of the old. Instinct with every at- 'tribute of push and pull, until today it is one of the wonders of the world. "It is cosmopolitan in its character, catholic in its spirit, controlling In its commerce.

It is in the lead' In education, among the foremost cities In its newspaper and publishing Interests, and ahead of all others In many Important manufactures and industries. It is coming to the front in art, and will not let Thomas' orchestra go. "It Is next to the metropolis in its colossal combinations of capital, and surpasses it in tte colossal 'cheek' Just brought to light of Its contractors, material furnishers, and laborers la their secret compact to hold, up both the city and the public. "It Is too great storm center of trades on-lioniam, and Its new labor organisations have taken away the breath of ail conservative labor leaders by their rapidity In starting strikes. Give Chicago another hundred years and what prophet can now portray the glories of our own queen city of the lakes." The Rev.

W. H. Carwardine, speaking In the Ada Street Methodist morning, said: ine certainties and uncertainties of life are well Illustrated la the life of our great city. We are soon to celebrate the centen- nial of Chicago. We Are Pros4 sf Tktir are naturally proud of City the marvelous devel- opment of Chicago.

With all Its defects, and they are many. Chicago is yet the wonder of the world. From the Indian village to the trading post: from the white man's settle- ment to the busy town; from Fort Dearborn to its present magnificent crooortions. with Its mighty cosmopolitan population, thriving Industrial expansion, its onward movement to the front rank of American municipalities. It has come to be the very heart of our contit nent, great In power, wealth, and industry.

"In the coming centennial we must not for- get to recognize the influence of Christianity vuurin ug scnooi in ine liro nr h. -lt ne leavening Influences for good are very vuivai in our municipality. The ties of evil are strong; but the righteous, humanitarian, and broad-spirited elements in our citizenship are capable, if exerted right, of overcoming the evil tendencies and working out the fulfillment of noble purposes in our civic Hie." In the North Side Christian church the Rev. Bruce Brown, the pastor, said: "A -city of 2.000.000 in a century! This Woujd have been considered the prophecy of a dreamer by the founders of our na- ar Greater tion. A city of Day.

000, and Its growth is but well begun! There lives no prophet who can tell of the Chicago that shall be a century hence. But one tbing we know the Chicago of the future is being made now. "The coming centennial will be a revels-tion of greatness. The volume of business, measured by Imports and exports: the construction of new buildings, the development of the public-school system, the endowment of educstlonal and charitable Institutions, the Increase in population, continue at a ratio that almost passes comprehension. 'But there is a darker side to the picture.

Chicago is great in crime and poverty, as well as In population and material prosperity. Danger lights csn br seen as well as the morning star of a better day. "The coming centennial should Impress upon 2,000.000 people the all-Importance of respect for law and the enforcement of law without fear or favor. If social revolution shall ever lay waste the city. It must come In open defiance of law.

"Too much praise cannot be given to the newspapers of the city that have led In a crusade against political and civic corruption. The council that was once a byword throughout the nation Is now very largely composed of reputable citizens, and corporations that once ruled with contempt are begging for terms." James J. Hill's plan for a larger standing army Is an-American, eald Professor Edward Amherst Ott at the Open church. Monroe ALars and Francisco streets. Standi Army la yesterday.

He said, in xt Xe4e. part: "A plea for a larger standing army must ever come from a man forgetful of our history, of what we have done without a large standing army, it Is not logical for us to worry about the Inadequacy of our force as compared with that ot other nations. The dilemma Is across the waters, not on this sioe. "The American boy does not love a nni form. There Is not only a great spirit against a standing army among our people, but It would be difficult to recruit a large standing army from among a class of young men who have, enjoyed the civilization of freedom.

"The hope on the part of our great corpo rations that have had trouble with laboring men, ana feel that there should be a larger military force ready to cope with the Indus trial malcontents, is not well taken. The American soldier does not like to fire on the American laborer; the man who draws the meager pay of a soldier In the regulsr army does not like to fire on the wage earner In the army of industry. "Words more proper at the opening part of this new century would be to add the cost of such an army as Mr. Hill proposed to the educational fund of the country, and so ln- crease the salaries of the teachers of public schools." The pulpit of the Forty-First Street Pres- byterian church was occupied yesterday by Professor J. E.

Me- Ferfeetloa. A fee of Park college. llama a ssd Dt- Missouri. The theme via. of the morning ser mon was "The Di vine perfection ana me Human," sug gested by the sermon on the mount.

He said in part: "Our perfection must wait upon our dis covery of the divine perfection. We cannot beat out worlds at our anvil, but we have some power, and we can help to shape the world which Is committed to us. Given our measure of power, we are recreant to our charge when we do not use It. It is sacrilege i not to work. It ia divine to be doing things.

"The consciousness of the divine omnlp-Sttenco did not make up the sum of Christ's knowledge of Godi-bardly 'constituted an appreciable portion- of Its content. Ke wished us to believe, course, that God created the tangible universe, but he cared most that we believe that the Father loves bis children. And so We- show our closest affinity with God In our moral "God's perfection Is nowhere more clearly displayed than in his forbearance with the wicked. The manifestation of the forgiving spirit comes nearly being the supreme test of the perfect human character." Thomas Williams lectured at the Christa-delphian meeting, Oriental hall, Masonic yesterday morning on "The Con- ReaU ef fllct Between Labor Maa'a Rale la Tkta and Capital- and Its Worla. Cure." He said In 'part: "In the very nature of things, a conflict of combined forces must be fraught with far greater danger to society than it would be when limited to separate Individuals.

would seem as it God had given the world over into the hands of men for a time, in order that man's. inability to cope with the great problems of human life might be made manifest. After nearly years the best that human governments can show, as the result of experience and experiment. Is a world la arms. Indeed, it Is admitted that the only way to secure what little peace there is Is by being prepared for war: "But what is the remedy for the world's evils? The only remedy Is In a divine man.

who Is wise enough, strong enough, and good enough' to solve every problem and Vight' every wrong. That man is the Lord Jesus Christ, whose return to this' earth to 'take to himself his great power and reign' Is shown to be not far off by the signs of the time." The Rer. B. A. Greene preached yesterday In the First Baptist church of Evanston on "The Christian The Christian View of Lyachlnar.

View of Lynching. In part he said: "The subject of lynching does not He on the surface of the moment. We are not to take it up hastily and lay It down with snap Judgment. It belongs to a condition of thlnga that will remain with us for all time. "There Is a sense In which God alone does justice to an atrocious crime.

When a thing is done it is done. Tou cannot undo it by turning yourself into a bloodhound and following up the criminal mercilessly. It does not undo It to break the Jail door and drag the prisoner out with a rope around his neck. hang him to the first tree, or riddle him with bullets. It will not undo it to tie him to a stake and set fire to his clothing, saturated witn oil.

You cannot undo the crime. "The only question Is how to deal best with the criminal la sight otGod and his fellows. Men are inclined to take the matter into their own bands and. in the frenzy of the moment, wreak vengeance. They do not stop to consider.

Their wrath Is at white heat and nothing could stand In the way or tneir fury. Mad men In their blind nesa seem to think that to stab, cut out the tongue, gouge out the eyes, and set fire to nesn win avenge the wrong. "After it Is all over, and there la a little heap of charred remains. Is the account of tnis man life closed? But some one asks. Shall not crimes be punished except aa God punishes? Remember this: In the first place, nothing that man can do can restore lire.
