Daily Missoulian, Wednesday, July 28, 1954 Roy Mack Tries Steels, Rails To Gain Control Are Leaders PHILADELPHIA (-Roy Mack, who previously remained in the background of the house of Mack, made a determined bid Tuesday to take over complete control of the Philadelphia Athletics and keep the team here. Mack said he was trying to buy the stock of his father, 91-yearold Connie Mack, and his brother Earle, general manager of the Athletics. He said the other Macks "want to get out." "I think I can get the money to, buy them out," Roy said. "I we will be able to get together (on a settlement) by the time we have our next meeting of the board of directors on Aug. 11.

The two brothers own 58 per cent of the A's stock with their father holding the remaining 42 per cent. Meanwhile, in his office in another part of Connie Mack Stadium, Earle Mack denied that Roy made a definite offer for his shares and that he had agreed to sell them. "The subject was brought up before between us, but never in a definite way. I want (the club) to stay here so Dad can keep driving down here with his chauffeur and go up to his office as usual." It's no secret that the are in serious financial trouble. groups in other cities Numerous, announced that they are willing to bid for the American League franchise and move it out of Philadelphia if the Macks are ready to sell.

Giants Are Strong 'Up the Middle' NEW YORK (AP) "Up the middle," says Leo Durocher of his National League leaders, "is where we're strong this One-quarter of the heartland is David Carlons Williams 25, an Irishman out of Texas who, Durocher says, has good hands and makes all the plays around second base. Last spring the Giants' manager was quoted as saying that if Williams, carrying a lame back, came through the club would be solid. Williams ran into a right fielder chasing a fly ball in 1950 and jarred a nerve in his back. There are times when it bothers him. Williams has played in 87 of the 97 Giant games to date and Tueshe said his back was all right.

He has been in on 63 double plays, hasn't made an error in 37 games -since June 19-and is fielding .986, six points below the league for second basemen. Williams hitting .229. He's record, come up with 77 hits, knocking over 35 runs. Seven of the hits were home runs. is what Williams calls his year, so far.

"I'm not hitting." He said he has no answer for it. Williams was asked if he was doing anything differently or taking extra practice to shake the slump. He said he wasn't, adding, "heck, it's been so long I don't know whether you call it a slump anymore." Last year he hit .297. "I can't fault him on his hitting," said Durocher. "'He isn't the only one who isn't hitting real well just now.

He's been playing good ball." Lack of hitting has brought the Giants five straight defeats. "Now that we're home--I think we play 19 out of our next 23 home -he's bound to do better. It can't help but do him good," the manager added. "Which park," Williams was asked, "do you like to hit in better than some way I'm hitting it would be the same in my back said Williams. And this from a Texan.

POWER AND BANK STOCKS Montana Power preferred, bid 116, asked 118. First Bank, bid 30, asked Northwest Banks, bid asked TWICE-A-DAY CLASS ADS Active Trade In Grains CHICAGO (P) Strength in soybeans and weakness in wheat featured active dealings in grains on the Board of Trade Tuesday Soybeans hit the 10 cent daily limit advance several times during the session, regularly falling back a little from that peak. All contracts set new seasonal highs. Continued hot, dry weather in most sections of the soybean belt, with no promise of real relief, stimulated demand. Weakness in cash wheat was an unsettling influence in the bread grain.

It was also felt the hot weather had stopped the spread of stem rust in the spring wheat belt. CHICAGO CASH GRAIN Wheat: No 3 red 2.07¼; No 1 mixed 2.10; No 3 mixed 2.06¾. There were many gains of between 1 and 3 points in key areas of the list. Losses as a general rule were small.

The rising prices brought in a lot of buyers and sent business to an estimated two and a half million shares for the day. That compares with 2,110,000 shares traded Monday in a mixed market. SPOKANE STOCKS Furnished by J. A. Hosle Co.
