The Montana Standard, Butte, Wednesday, June 19, 199111 The Montana Standard Peoples loses 12 Youth ball 12 Klnm worn) wtim 1 I Muckers divide HELENA The Butte Muckers Paul Flynn and the Helena Reps' Tim Unger both flirted with no-hitters while trading pitching victories IEGION BASEBALL in Class A American Legion baseball games Tuesday night. Flynn racked up his seventh win in eight decisions, hurling the Muckers to a 14-9 win in the opener. He had his no-hitter broken up by Trevor Smith's leadoff homer in the fourth inning. Brian Doherty clubbed a two-run triple with two outs in the first inning, and the Muckers splurged for nine in the. third to make Flynn's task easy.

Brad Salvagni's leadoff double, singles by Doug Moore, Chad Roes-ti, R.J. Olson and Flynn, plus walks and errors accounted for the Muckers' big frame. In the second game, Unger had a no-hitter until Doherty's leadoff single in the fifth. Muckers starter Joe McGuinn gave up only one hit the first three innings and fanned four, before being spelled by Salvagni. The Muckers, 14-7 overall and 7-3 r.

-It LI 1 1 1 Gates, led off the Butte ninth by reaching base when his hot grounder ate up Pioneers first baseman Paul Weldon. Greg Wiseman was up next and he drilled a pitch from Pocatello reliever Rich Ekman, 0-1, hard into right field. Sullivan had gone off with the pitch, so when Pocatello right fielder Bill Carmona mis played the ball and it bounded toward the fence, Sullivan was able to score without a play at the plate. It ended the game, making a winner of Butte's fifth pitcher of the night, Terrell Berthau, 1-0. Berthau came on in the top of the ninth in place of Andy Watson, who appeared to suffer a muscle injury while pitching, Watson had recorded alt four of his outs in 1 13 innings of work on strikeouts to that point.

After trailing through much of the game, Pocatello had rallied to grab a 6-5 lead in the top of the eighth after tying the count 5-5 in the seventh. Two throwing errors by Copper Kings third baseman Mike Edwards let in the tying run and then a passed ball on a strikeout set up the go-ahead. Pocatello designated hitter Larry Minter struck out swinging, but Butte catcher Michael Crespo was unable to handle the pitch from Watson. Minter reached first base before Crespo could chase down the loose ball. Steve Mill, who will start on the hill for the Pioneers Wednesday night, entered the game as a pinch-runner for Minter.

He stole second and then beat a throw to third base on a fielder's choice hit into by Dean Banks. Mill then scored the go-ahead run on a Terry Robinson groundout. The Copper Kings tied the score in their half of the eighth. Bryan -Roberts reached on a fielding error by Pocatello shortstop Kevin Wong By Bruce Sayler Standard Sport Writer When Charlie Sullivan raced home fronT first base to score the winning run in the bottom of the ninth it was an apt ending to an error-infested baseball game at Alumni Coliseum Tuesday night. The homestanding Butte Copper Kings nipped the Pocatello Pioneers 7-6, but not until the teams combined to commit 13 errors.

Sullivan's run snapped two ties, It gave the Copper Kings their second straight victory over the Pioneers in the two-game-old Pioneer League season, clinching a series win in the three-game set. And, the run came on Pocatello's seventh error of the evening. The two teams had equally divided 12 of them until the winning run scored.
