PROMPT EXACT Mark Twain was warmly welcomed, but he called forth enthusiastic applause when he addressed the company In his quaint, child like German, mastering the difficult language matic criticism, however honest and sincere It may be, is not yet established In this country as a fine art. The third and last point Is perhaps the most important of all. It is distinctly hinted in the above article that the critics of New York are controlled, to a certain extent, by the managerial syndicate, which la at present paramount in America.

Now, this Is an assertion which strikes at the very root of honest criticism, and it is one which has been made in more or less positive terms at other times and places all over the country. Obviously no writer should make Buch a suggestion unless he Is absolutely sure of his facts. In the article above there is not a single proof offered In substantiation of the wild statement. As a matter of fact there can be no truth whatever in the charge. Kvery one who knows anything about the theatrical business knows also that the money which Is made out of a successful play comes from the big cities of America outside of New York.

new delicacy, stuffed whose writers have an interested motive and those which are dictated by an admiration of the humorist. Among the latter are quite fifty ways of curing the gout. In the first notice the Xeue Frele Presse published on Mark Twain there was a reference to his wish to use his observant powers as long as they were quite fresh, by standing at some street corner where the tide of men and women flowed past, and to see with an eye to which all is new the difference between these men and women and those of our other busy cities. On the Sunday following Poetzl, the Vienna humorist, one of the few who write the dialect to perfection, showed Mark Twain what a queer city he had come to. He placed him on a bridge with note book and pencil and set all the characteristic figures of Vienna streets the errand boy, the commissionaire, the bootblack, the chestnut vender, the woman who washes the cabs, the cabmen, and the police to guess who the stranger was and what he wanted.

This was done with so much good humor and good taste that a friendship has resulted from It between Mark Twain and Poetzl. though they cannot talk much together, which is a pity. Mr. Terriss mifht be compared, in a certain way, with Mr. William Gillette in this try, but the methods of the two men are so entirely different that the comparison is of little value. Mr. Gillette plays melodrama, bat he is too intelligent to do it in the traditional manner.

Mr. William Terriss kept up the regular old traditions, and yet overcame the absurdities by the force of his personality and the perfection of his looked at from the conventional point of view. But It was not merely his ability as an actor that endeared him to the hearts of his great audience. Both on the stage and off It he stood for all those characteristics with which we are accustomed to credit the Anglo-Saxon race, and in whose existence we are sometimes led. in our own hearts, to disbelieve.

The qualities which William Ter-rissalways portrayed were physical courage, bulldog tenacity, absolute respect and tenderness for women, a stern sense of duty, and an inviolate honor. That some of these qualities have not been altogether left out of the makeup of the latter-day Anglo-Saxon, we are occasionally reminded, by acts of heroism upon the battlefield, such as the last land of Wilson's company in South Africa, and the storming of the Darghai Gap on the frontier of India. Deeds like these and the many less trumpeted acts of private heroism sources of consolation, but we needed as well a few men like Terriss upon the stage, who might always keep a light before the public, the twin flames of courage and loyalty in an are when the cynical are apt to scoff at such old-fashioned virtues. Therefore, in the Hartuns. verv tine.

Hayman and Frohman contemplate nothing more nor less than a close combination to the exclusion of all weaker competitors. That such a combination can exist for any length of time it is hard to believe, and for that reason the fulmina-tions of the World and the Dramatic Mirror seem to be rather unnecessary. At the same time the trust may do a great deal of harm while it lasts although it must be honestly admitted that the harm is not yet very apparentand it is the duty of every honest critic to oppose the foisting of inferior wares upon a long-suffering public.

But again, it must be repeated that there is not now. and never has been, any evident tenderness upon the part of Xew York critics for the big trust; and any charge of such a nature should be immediately refuted.
