Affecting Instance of I-'ilial and Maternal Love Executive Clemency. The IV ew Orleans Picayune, of the 27th ultimo, relates the following: A young man named Thompson, about twenty-two years of age, who had been in the penitentiary of this State, sentenced to imprisonment for life, was on Thursday pardoned by Gov. Johnson, with the oon-sent of the Senate. The facts oonneoted with hi case were of a peculiarly affecting nature.

Some two years since he went to the parish of Coddo, from and obtained employment as an overseer on a plantation. Shortly alter he was unfortunate enough to get into a bitter personal difUoulty with a well-known citizen of that parish, the brother-in-'aw of his emp'oyer. Subsequently, as it is reported while Thompson was in the woods alone, he was attacked by the person with whom he had quarrelled, where they had what is called a regular "bear fight." The yomu man, after a long and desperate ooniiiot as the sr-eno of the fight plainly showed succeeded in killing his antagonist. Thompson at once, though advised to flee, gave himseif up to the civil authorities, feeling confident that if justice were done him he would be acquitted. In this he was disappointed.

Being poor, without friends or influence, and in a strange land, he had not the means of procuring counsel, and was finally found guilty of murder. There were no witnesses to the fight, and it was on his own statements, voluntarily made, that he was committed and tried The oireumstances which led to his pardon are the following: After his conviction, and his being immured in the Srate prison, which the stern mandate of the law had deslined to be his living tomb, with those feeelmgs of aiieotion which must ever dwell in the heart of a son however wayward he may be he managed to have it intimated to his only surviving parent, a widow, that he had died of smali-pox. He thus hoped to soften, by taking away the humiliation with which a knowledge of the truth would have invested it, the blow that had separated them in this world; and by settling forever, in one painful emotion, ail her anxieties, he thought to stop the inquiry which would otherwise have been instituted by her. But the instinctive love of the mother told a different tale to her sorrowing bosom, and restless with this unsatisfactory record of his fate, she forthwith began a diligent search, when, to her unspeakable anguish, she ascertained that a'though her lost boy was in reality alive, he was worse tiian dead both to her and the world. He was in prison, a shackled felon, a convicted murderer! At once, with ail a mother's ardent love, which predisposed her to believe him in-noeent -hoping against hope" as it were she set about devising schemes lor his deliverance to wrest him, if human means admitted, from the iron arm of ie law.

A pamphlet under the ioilowing title has been printed in Boston: Proceedings of the friends of a Railroad to San Francisco, at their Public Meeting, held at the S. Hotel, 111 Boston, April 19, including an Address to the People of the United States, showing that P. P. F. Degrand's plan is the onlv one as yft proposed, which will secure promptly and certainly, and by a single act of Legislation, the oon-slruotion of a Railroad to California, in the shortest time allowed by its physical obstaoies." The lact that in the course of three months five large editions have been called for.

suffices to give the subject at least the importance derived from the evidence, that it is the subject of thought among a large portion of the community. Mr. De Grand proposes that a company of men, in the honesty, of whom the' Nation can confide, bo c.baiterfd by Congress to construct a railroad from St. Louis to San Francisco, with a carina! of 1110.000,000 dollars, and that this company, (after having paid in S'2 shall have the right to borro-5- U. It is proposed that Congress grant to this enmpanv a strip of laud, ten miles wide, on the north side of the road, also land for tne road itself, depots, and the right ro use timber, stone, iron and gravel for the ooiiKtrurtion of the road from the public lards Mr De Grand says: "The ad.11tt.ion of this plan will secure the corr.nle-fioi. of the road, in ns brief a space of time as maybe permitted, by its physical obstacles: and will secure by a single act of Congress, free from the chance of future freaks of legislation. Tins is the distinguishing leamre of my plan, and it is free from the objection ol absorbing the private resources of active men; and free from the risk of hailing, in this great work, at every step, for want of tarigib'e means." Immediately after the completion of the survey the company will proceed to construct the road along tiie whole route, commencing as many points as practicable, building where it is advisable temporarv roads, so as to bring into use the whole line as fast as it may be completed.
