Mrs. King, in her match against Miss Wade, had to play against 15,000 excited partisan fans on the center court who cheered excitedly every time the British girl won a point. Mrs. Gunter, the former Nancy Richey, started well against Miss Casals but failed to keep up the pace. The men's quarter-finals are scheduled for Tuesday.

Miss Goolagong did not look like a champion in her match against Miss Durr at least until the last five games. Then, coming from 2-5 in the second set, she produced some of the volleys and cross-court placements which helped her win the 1971 crown. Miss Evert played her usual controlled game from the baseline, but for once her opponent won a large share of the crowd's sympathy.

WIMBLKDON, Kngland lAP) Chris Evert and Kvonne Goolagong, the young arch-rivals of the tennis courts, reached the Wimbledon semifinals Monday and at last were set for a match against each other. Cool little Chris, 17, from Fort Lauderdale, outlasted Patti Hogan of La Jolla. Calif.

6-2, 44, 6-1. Kvonne, 20, the curly-haired Australian, who is defending the women's singles title, defeated Francoise Durr of France 8-6, 7-5, although she was way below her best form. Fans are expected to wait all night for standing room at the long-anticipated confrontation between the two girls in Wednesday's semifinals. Meanwhile, Mrs. Billie Jean King of Long Beach, beat Britain's Virginia Wade 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 and looked a dangerous contender.

Billie Jean's semifinal opponent will be her old friend, Rosemary Casals of San Francisco, who came from behind and eliminated Mrs, Nancy Gunter of San Angelo, Tex. 3-6, 6-4, 6-0. Every fan at Wimbledon-crowds of between 25.000 and 30,000 have poured into the All-England Club every day has been longing for a clash between Chris and Evonne. As usual, the little American girl was cool and apparently quite unexcited by the prospect. "I am trying not to get this out of perspective," she said.

"I shall not worry about the match. "My game is always on the same level. Evonne's game varies so much. However, these persons ignore a number of factors, including the fact that great trout fisher-ies like the Big Hole River, which is often called the nation's best blue ribbon trout stream, are irreplacable. And they ignore the sheer drama of a wild river in itself, which in cases like the few remaining wild areas of the Missouri are mute testimony to the subtle but powerful natural elo-quence of a major free-flowing stream.

Colorado An Indication These are values that would be lost im- mediately with any development, however. Another concern is the other danger of permit-ting continual development along a great waterway. We need only look to one of the country's great streams for an indication. There a water resource expert reports that the mighty river that dug the Colorado Canyon has been dammed, used, and re-used until it is entirely spent. Sometimes called the Wild Bull River of the Southwest, the Colorado reportedly is little more Wi than a few acre-feet of salty drain when it reaches its destination at the Gulf of California.

William E. Warne, former California water Resources director, recently pointed out that the history of the development of the Colorado River is both a premise of what other regions may achieve and a warning regarding some of the consequences of full development against which others must guard. There are also interesting sections on the history of the shotgun sports for the expert.

Scat Birds, Scat Interruption of a bird's normal hearing capabilities may provide a future means for keeping waterfowl away from disastrous oil spills. xii; According to the American Petroleum Institute, it has contracted for the development study of an instrument which emits a harmless electronic signal, reportedly disrupting the bird's natural audio pattern, and forcing them to leave the area. That's all well and good.

Now if we could just find some kind of an electronic or otherwise signal that would tell man to stay out of fragile environmental areas where such things as oil Electronic Mosquito Repellant Speaking of electronic devices, some time ago I mentioned in The Outdoor Picture that a small electronic device had been devised which was supposed to keep mosquitoes away through the use of a high-pitched impulse. Powered by a nine-volt battery, the tiny device it would fit in the palm of your hand was proclaimed as a scientific breakthrough and as a boon to mankind because it would eliminate the use of messy insect repellants that are applied directly to the skin. Would that it were so. However, I recently made a test of the device at the request of the firm that manufac- Sutures them, and regretfully must report that the device does not do the job. It did make the im-pulse.

You could hear the high-pitched sound. And the mosquitoes swarmed around upon both the "gadget" and me. Finally in desperation, for the mosquitoes are terrible on the Big Hole River, I used some standard mosquito spray. I also sprayed some on the device and then, and only then, did the mosquitoes stay away from it. Motorized Watercraft Out Four high mountain lakes on the Salmon National Forest have been closed to motorized watercraft, according to an order issued by Forest Supervisor John Emerson.

The lakes are Meadow Lake on the Leadore District, Iron Lake and Wallace Lake on the Salmon District and Yellow Jacket Lake on the Cobalt District. Emerson noted that all are relatively small and located in small basins high in the moun- tains, and that the sound of motors actually detracts from other users of the lakes and there is some safety hazard, noise pollution and possible water pollution. Funds for Lion Research Funds to insure the completion of two vital gj: predatory animal studies in the United States have been made available by the World Wildlife Fund. According to the organization, it is cos-ponsoring research which will increase knowledge of the ecology and behavior of the Si; timber wolf and the mountain lion and lead to more practical scientific management programs for the species. The wolf research program is in Michigan, while the mountain lion study is in Idaho under the direction of Dr.

Maurice G. Hornocker of the gil University of Idaho. Hornocker, a graduate of the University of Montana, is one of the world's leading cat authorities. His continuing study of the mountain lion is considered a classic in predator-prey relationship research and points up the essential role of the mountain lion in its ji environment. Earlier Monday, the sponsors of the championship match turned down Fischer's bid for a cut of the gate receipts in addition to the prize money previously agreed on. Marshall quoted Fischer as saying of Slater's proposal: "I "gotta accept it. It's a stupendous offer." He said Fischer considered the gesture "incredible and generous and brave." Slater said in London he received confirmation of Fischer's acceptance by telephone and had been told the challenger planned to fly to Reykjavik. Fischer must arrive in Reykjavik by noon Tuesday 8 a.m. EDT or forfeit his chance at Spassky and the title.

The first game is to begin at 5 p.m. Tuesday 1 p.m. EDT postponed from the same time Sunday at Fischer's request. the Russians protested the granting of the postponement by the the World Chess Feder-ation-FIDE. When Slater offered to put up his own money as an extra inducement to the American grandmaster, he stated: "Fischer has said that money is the problem.

Here it is. What I am saying to Fischer now is 'come out and Marshall claimed that the is sue with Fischer never had been money. "It was the principle," Marshall said. "He felt Iceland wasn't treating this match or his countrymen with the dignity that it and they deserved. And he was furious about the press censorship.

He was flying around the room." The sponsors announced restrictions in move-by-move and photo coverage of the 24-game match because the rights had been sold. Slater made his offer after the Icelandic Chess Federation's board rejected Fischer's demands for 30 per cent of the gate receipts.
