8 The Montana Standard, Butte, Tuesday. June 19, 1990 Attractions 9 Standard 3 "You never know if you'll ever have the opportunity again. And for a while, I thought that an opportunity was all it was." Hale Irwin after becoming only the fifth golfer ever to win the U.S. Open three times. Soccer report Irwin claims third U.

title 1 -'V I The two men, who completed the regulation 72 holes tied at 280, remained that way after playing another 18 holes, each in 74, two over par but a respectable score in winds that gusted to 35 mph. They continued the playoff on the first hole, the sixth time they played it in competition this week and the second time on Monday. Donald got his second shot about 30 feet from the flag. Irwin, now the winner of 18 titles in a 22-year career, stuck his in about 8 feet from the wind-whipped flag. After Donald missed, Irwin rolled his home and scored his first victory in five seasons.

But Donald, winner of only one title in an 11-season tour career, hooked his short -driver into the left rough. He ran his approach into the left-front bunker, then blasted out about 15 feet short of the cup. Irwin two-putted for par from about 25 feet and Donald then stepped up to the most important putt of his life. He makes it for par and wins the U.S. Open.

He misses it, and the playoff continues, now under sudden-death format. He missed it. And Irwin had a second had to come from behind to do it. Some ragged action in the middle of the round and some poor results from wood shots played from deep rough enabled Donald to move to a two-stroke lead after 12 holes. It stayed that way until Irwin threw his approach in about six feet from the cup and made birdie on the lBth hole statistically the toughest on the Medinah Country Club No.

3 course. That cut it to one. They halved the 17th with pars and went to the 18th with the gritty Donald hanging on to that slender lead. bless him. I almost wish he had won." Irwin said.

"'I had to keep pecking away. Not a great day, but 1 had to stay right there." Ray Floyd was the oldest previous winner when he won at 44 in 1986. Irwin's drawn-out triumph, the longest playoff since 1946, went ith previous Open triumphs in 1974 and 1979 and made him the fifth three-time winner of this tournament. Willie Anderson. Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus each won four U.S.

Attorney clears Thomas DETROIT (AP) U.S. Attorney Stephen Markman affirmed on Monday that Detroit Pistons guard Isiah Thomas is not the target of a gambling investigation or federal criminal charges. "While I am not, of course, able to describe the details of any grand jury investigation, given the prominence of Thomas and the attention that this matter has received, I would like to clarify the record as best I can at this time," Markman said. He said Thomas initiated contact with the FBI after a story about the gambling investigation was aired Friday, and he said Thomas has fully cooperated in the ongoing investigation. The report, based on anonymous sources, said checks made out to Thomas were cashed at a grocery store owned by a man being investigated for money laundering.

The Pistons celebrated its second NBA championship in as many years with a parade and rally Monday in downtown Detroit attended by "an estimated 200,000 fans. 0J 1 2 San Diego 000 000 0101 San Francisco 100 000 lOx 2 -Parent DP San Francisco 1. LOB San Diego 6. San Francisco 3. 2B Leach.
