The players will take a one-half hour lunch break each day.

All practices are open to the public. The teacher-student ratio in the camp is better than can be found on most campuses. The 29 players on the roster are being drilled by five instructors as the Texas Rangers, entering their third year as the Copper Kings major-league affiliates, have beefed up the staff for the intense training sessions leading toward the Wednesday season-opener. Wilis has two new assistants this season in pitching coach Len Stre-litz and batting coach Steve Arnieri. Both will be with the Copper Kings this season and will live in the Montana Tech dormitory to supervise the players, also being lodged in the facility.

The Rangers have also dispatched their roving minor-league infield instructor, Perry Hill, and their roving minor-league hitting coach, Jim Skaalen, to Butte to help with preseason practices. Strelitz and Arnieri replace Dave Freisleben and Marvin White on the Copper Kings staff. Athletics 12, White Sox 3 CHICAGO (AP) Terry Steinbach had a homer among his three hits and added three RBIs, and the Oakland Athletics scored seven runs off Melido Perez in the first inning to rout the Chicago White Sox 12-3 Saturday night. By Bruce Sayler Standard Sport Writer Professional baseball prospects were traveling a "bumpy" path Saturday as practice began for the Butte Copper Kings Pioneer League team at Alumni Coliseum. The players on-hand Saturday were greeted by Bump Wills, third-year manager of the Copper Kings who had a major-league career with the Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs before returning to the game as a field boss.

Wills, 37-year-old son of former Los Angeles Dodgers base-stealing great Maury Wills, preceded opening drills with a short team meeting concerning rules and expectations governing on-and off-of-the field activities. A basic six-hour workout covering fundamentals followed. Some missed Saturday's session because of being "bumped" from their overbooked flight out of Salt Lake City Friday night. Pitchers Terry Burrows and Scott Erickson, outfielders David Hulse and Kevin Murray and infielder Brian Merca-do were all stranded overnight in the Utah capital, but were due to arrive in Butte late Saturday. They are expected to join team workouts Sunday, Mike Shields, general manager of the Copper Kings, said.

The Butte Copper Kings Booster Club will put on its Meet-the-Players Picnic Sunday at 4:30 at the ballpark. The gathering is open only to booster club members, Copper Kings personnel and guests.
