The action ot the military authorities was not taken as a military st'-p, but iuacivil capacity, under a power conferred by contract. It seems that the president of the Company, in making purchases of rolling stock at a Government sale in lsbit, stipulated that in the event of default iu the payment of any instalment of the purchase money, the l'nited States might take possession of the road and hold it until the unpaid debt should be discharged. It was in pursuance ol this right that the late action of the Government was taken. The money will now be paid by the friends of the company, aud the power of the Government under the contract will thereupon cease. The election will be held on the second Titosday in next mouth, the day to which the meeting adjourned.

A hand will be in attendance during the festival, and the tables will be loaded with substantial food and agreeable refreshments, prepared in the best style and at reasonable prices. I-he ladies hope to receive a number of the articles displayed at the I'oniological and Horticultural Exhibition, and would appeal to tlicir owners beforehand to turn them over to them as soon as possible after the distribution of premiums.

We bespeak for these ladies the greatest aim'it nt of patronage. They were the first in the South to organize an to take care of the graves of the ('on federate dead: and while the number of graves under its care makes its work larger probably than tha of any other, it lias been less prominently before the public than Others of more recent origin ami more conspicuous location. Its members, however, with untiring energy, and with inadequate means, have sten lily pursued the object in view, and have been often, as now, in such pecuniary straits that nothing biitsincere devotion to the cause could have hound them to an undertaking so exceedingly dillicult, and burdensome. Asm part I he evidence nt their fidelity to their trust, they present a catalogue often thousand names rescued from the imperfect records of the cemetery made during the war they point to the appearance of tin'grounds so greatly improved by what they have done; and last, but not least, to about leu thousand head-boards neatly painted and inscribed with the names and regiments of the dead. That their work is gratefully appreciated, and that it is prized by many as the only means which they coulil ever have been enabled to discover the resting-places of beloved friends and relatives, we have the most pleasing assurances of joy ami gratitude as will long remain to be fragrant souvenirs amid painful remembrances of the past and the struggles incident to such an enterprise at Mich a time of general poverty and distress.

French Spy was brought on the Kiclnnond stage on 3londay night by 31'lie Havel before a full house. This was the favorite piece of the charming Oleste, in which her great genius as a pantoiinuust was brought out so brilliantly, and in which she completely enthused the Richmond auilience.

In the matter of the of the character, the present representative does not approach the lamented Celeste. The physical achievements ut 31'He Ravel are, however, wonderful. Such muscular prowess its she exhibited in her dancing, her contortions of body, and her fencing, is rarely achieved by woman ur man. In the fencing especially she showed endurance as well as skill that was amazing. She handled the sword with a litheness, art, and ease that seemed not to tire at all, while her adversary labored and sweated and blowed as one altogether over- tasked and over-inatched.

A spy "of such -kill and endurance would be a dangerous customer, whether French" or not' The performance was decidedly in the line of force, and was strongly infused with saltpetre. Such lighting is noi seen often, even on the haltle-lield and the wonder wsis how anybody survived such hacking and fusillading. As a variation upon the French up in good style of drees and military sensational, and exhibition afforded very considerable entertainment. The delicious piece from Rossini, Voce 1'oca Fa," was rendered in the most charming manner. The clarionet in this was exquisite.
